  1. "Zawiya Uprising" did a great job using portions of the same map in a campaign so there is continuation from one mission to the next as one uses a portion of the map from each immediately preceding mission.  That's the best one can do in the absence of the wonderful CM1 "Operations" that enabled one to play in a "window" of a much larger map.  (In a CM1 "Operation/Campaign" the window either advanced or retreated in each successive mission depending on previous mission success or failure.)

  2. I know what people mean about MOUT.  I learned my MOUT SOP playing a scenario called something like "The Relief of Joker 3" on the (at the time) amazing Ramada map.  (It was a long time ago so am sorry I don't recall the designer's name.)

Once you get the MOUT "system" down (in CM2), MOUT ops (in CM2) can get very repetitive.  A serious challenge is that in CM2, it's often hard to see what is going on due to the viewpoint getting blocked by buildings etc.

  3. There is nothing wrong with speculating that Hitler and his advisors made different decisions regarding what weapons systems were developed and built and what the strategy was.  Eg: Maybe throwing all the war effort into Panthers so they were as common as PzIV's - but no Tigers (or vice versa).  Or, negotiating a peace or stalemate on one of the fronts so Germany could focus on the other front.

Churchill really hated the Soviets, but feared Hitler's intentions.  Halifax, Chamberlain and other wanted appeasement.  What would happen if Hitler sought peace with the West in exchange for an all-out offensive vs the Soviets?

“Shrinking the map”.  It is one of the largest issues we have at this scale of wargaming.  One cannot employ the same map scales for WW2 in a modern title.

IIRC GeorgeMC has created CMSF2 maps for his campaigns that do offer that sort of long range (2Km-3Km+) LOS for optimal use of the ATGM vehicles.  So, it is possible for other titles.

  5. No worries.  It's fine whatever works best for one.

My beef with trying to find a hull down position is that the unit frequently goes from NO LOS, to PARTIAL HULLDOWN with no chance of getting "full" HULLDOWN.  I have spent much time experimenting moving an AFV back and forth the minimum distance possible trying to get hulldown in a situation like this, and due to vagaries of the CM2 terrain have found it impossible.

  6. Re "fantasy" scenarios, it would at least be interesting to have the German succeed in Ardennes not get stopped and reached Antwerp, and hypothesize what would happen next.

"What would the western Allies have done if the Germans had succeeded in capturing Antwerp during the Germans 1944 Ardennes offensive? They would have flanked von Zangen's forces ( the 15th Amy), trapped them at Antwerp and either forced them to surrender or destroyed them.Oct 11, 2017"

    Would they??

I appreciate that the Bulge wasn't all knife fights and that there are plenty of open terrain missions but my own feeling is that the Germans had already lost the war at that point and that they're just there to delay the inevitable

The point is that it doesn't have to be all woods knife fights if you are designing an ahistorical scenario.  I was only saying be inspired by the Bulge situation cos that is one of the most popular situations - a crack formation driving thru one obstruction after another.

having fantasy OBs and things that just never happened happen is very jarring for a wargamer.

Depends on what you mean by "fantasy".  But, given CM is a tactical game, you'd have to be a bit of a historian to notice something that never happened and it being jarring. On a tactical level almost anything could have happened at some point - it just never got recorded in the history books.  One would be a bit of a pedant to worry about that aspect.

I would love to make a German WW2 campaign where the Germans enjoy air support and have the all the advantages they enjoyed in 39-42 and all the kit they had in 44-45,

Yes, agreed.  I for one would love that as well.  It gets a bit boring always playing scenarios/campaigns that attempt to be accurate historically - when one normally can only be really accurate at an operational or strategic level.

Since the Ardennes is a perennial favorite, how about a similarish operation on the East Front?  Eg: Hitler has several crack units still available and they cut a swathe thru the Russians trying to cut off a major supply source and force the surrender of a large part of the Red Army.

I don't recall Steve ever saying that they have no intention of ever doing the early war. I recall him saying that they felt it was more profitable to do the late war first.

I very much hope you are right.  I always had the impression from when CMBN came out that BF had no intention to do (say) a N Africa game - ie: a CM2 version of CMAK, nor a CM2 version of CMBB enabling us to fight from Barbarossa onwards.  But, if the have changed their minds...  that would be great.  Certainly N Africa '40-'42 was a favorite of cardboard wargames, but it was dismaying that BF said that CMAK did not sell well.

  10. From WSJ today (edited):

"Western officials and Ukrainian soldiers are concerned that rising tensions between President Volodymyr Zelensky and his top general could hamper the country’s war effort against Russia...

...Russian forces are back on the offensive after Ukraine’s military effort, involving thousands of troops trained and equipped by the West, withered in the face of well-prepared defenses.  Ukraine is also facing a crunch in military and financial support as internal political disputes in the U.S. and the European Union have stalled proposed aid.

...Signs of discord between the two leaders, long dismissed as rumors by aides, emerged after Zaluzhniy referred to the war as a stalemate in an interview with the Economist last fall, saying Ukraine needed a major upgrade to military capabilities if it hoped to expel Russian forces from Ukrainian territory.

...differences have surfaced over how to fill Ukraine’s ranks to hold off the larger Russian army. Zaluzhniy has said he needs more resources, including hundreds of thousands more troops to replace dead, injured and exhausted fighters."
