1. I have been a wargaming grognard since I was young. There would be nothing so satisfying as a good computer simulation of WWII, and so far COS has come closest. But SC gets high marks and is quite enjoyable. I have hopes that SC2 will get it right. SC is not as good at representing the flow of the fronts accurately as I would like. I have played thousands of hours of board war games, especially, World in Flames, Drang Nach Osten, War in the East, War in the Pacifc, Third Reich, etc. So far COS did it best, and one of the reasons for this is that it was somewhat modelled after World in Flames. Dynamic fronts with active Zones of Control and blitzkrieg elements is needed, but the right balance must be struck. Playtesting for equality of position is crucial. Take your time on this. And a worthy AI opponent would just be too much to ask for. It is extremely hard to code it well. I am sceptical of tiles rather than hexes, but then again my favorite game is Civilizaion 3 Conquests and it uses tiles. I have always wished it was hex-based as I was raised on hex-based wargames. SC can handle more complexity. I could stand to introduce a half dozen or more new unit types. I really really like the COS system. I completely agree with those who have argued for implementing more of its systems into SC3. Nothing has come close to it for fun-factor or for realistically simulating the ebb and flow of the Eastern Front. All in all SC is a VERY good game. As far as I can tell it is the best hope for a worthy simulation of the historical possibilities that existed in WWII. I look forward to playing SC2 soon as well. I like the idea of not allowing air or sea units to have lethal bombardment.
2. I hereby anounce my withdrawal from my already forfeited game vs. Treeburst155 in the second round of the AKoTM v. 2.0 tournament as requested by IronDuke. I had a great time crushing the winner of last AKoTM in the first round, but a combination of things led to my being MIA and AWOL for a while. I congratulate Treeburst on his hollow victory and look forward to meeting him in one of the later tournaments. [ 07-23-2001: Message edited by: harpooner ]
3. Yes, I will surface again some day. I will rise from the depths and smite you all!!! especially the perfidious LEEO and the dastardly STUKA! even may the mythic MEEKS rise upon yee once more and lay you waste... life takes precedence for me at the moment.
4. I am all psyched up for the second round... I may not be ready to start my second round match for a few days as I am going on a trip. I will certainly be all ready and "good to go" by June 10th. At that point I will arrange for a good time to zip through the match at tcp/ip speed with treeburst. thanks, harpooner
5. No offense intended Sir Jason. I may have been tipping back a few too many champagne glasses today. Keep up the good work, old man.
6.
quote:
Originally posted by panzerwerfer42: A good read for this topic is "Hitler's Panzers East". I can't remember the author, but it's not biased towards either side. He points out the often missed fact that by late July-August, Army Group Center outnumbered the Russians facing them and still failed Moscow. It goes into great detail about the decisions behind taking the pocket in Ukraine rather than pushing to Moscow. He concludes the Germans lost the war in the fall of '41.

I agree. ANd while Jason C is astute to point out the operational inflexibilty of the overall German design, it needs to be pointed out that this was an intrinsic aspect of the Nazi regime. Hitler had his fingers in the pie. He was no general. The generalship of the Wehrmacht was better left to the real generals, like Guderian and Manstein and Rommel. The worst decision of the war may have been Hitler's command to Guderian to turn south to help with the encirclement of the Russian Ukrainian Army Group near Kiev. That's where the war was lost. This article doesn't come out and say it, but it is there between the lines. German operational inflexibility came from the top down. It was much like the "garbage in garbage-out" concept that we are familiar with from our Vietnam War experience. Kill the messenger. No one wants to be the bearer of bad tidings. So, losses get transmogrified into "attritional victories". It leads to misinformed leadership and an operational hubris which is ultimately self-defeating. JasonC is astute to point out the importance of the attrition which the "victories" in France and North Africa and the Balkans caused. Therein lie the seeds which grew into the failure on the Easter Front.
7. "The operational surprised that inflicted serious..." PROOFREAD YOUR POSTS you wanker. Jeeze..the level of literacy among the youth these days.. *sigh*
8. MrSpkr and I both used the extent of our (admittedly limited) hacker skills to attempt this problem today. We wanted to wind up a game that was an obvious blow out without a formal surrender on his part. We couldn't manage it. We are currently finishing it by "fast" pbem. Can anyone provide detailed instructions? Does it matter that I am on DSL? Can I still host? How do I convert the text file to cmb?
9. ok ok If Monica Lewinsky (felatio artiste of the First Order) burst into my bedroom and offered me the hummer of my life for my CMBO disc, I would tell her to nuff off. How's that? Not good enough you say? Ok...Alright...If Laetitia Casta AND Heidi (Boom Boom) Klum did a slow striptease while disassembling and cleaning my Ak-47 for me...would I give them my CMBO disk? Nooooo sir. If they pointed the rifle at me? Well....seeing as how they might hurt themselves because supermodels don't know from assault rifles...I'd think about it. 10. Stock up on microwavable food, and don't forget to water the kids.
11. I think it sounds like an extremely realistic and immersing way to play the game. I'm all for any mod that creates a more historically accurate model to simulate the WW II fighting experience. It wasn't until this last decade that the US Army came out with remote controlled surveilance planes and drones used at the battalion level to assist with reconaissance. Why should you as the battalion commander in CMBO have access to 50 year advanced technology? I vote to have the Ironman/Franko style of play included in CM2 as an option for each battle/operation.
