  1. I will agree with Deadmarsh, i think in game terms the Jackson is second choice to the M-10 (staying back) and the Hellcat (rushing foward). The slope on the M10s armour is good enough to let you use hetzer tactics - using two at once on a backward incline to increase armour slope - while the benefit of the hellcat's speed is obvious. IMHO the jackson is an akward compromise. the jackson cannot carry infantry either. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by JasonC: Oh, I certainly prefer the Jackson to the M-10. ...Since I tend to be a fairly conservative armor player (hunting from out of LOS, generally staying "back" rather than rushing flanks, etc), the Jackson tends to do better for me.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> It would seem to me that M10s are perfect for your style of play.
  2. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Chad Harrison: what are the CAL rules?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Combined Arms League over at tournament house has its own set of Fionn's rules on the site that limit other things (most importantly small guns) that Fionn's don't. It's useful coz it's up there for everyone to see, so there are no arguments. It is not particulary complete though. eg "lets play panther 76 CAL rules plus no flak trucks and limit 3 platoons of SMG squads and 1 flame-producing vehicle per side, and use the end game randomizer, and no crew recon and..." etc...
  3. I consistantly see the Puma used, and when I first started playing I used it a lot too. Which is strange because i think in pure game terms it is overpriced. Maybe it's popular because people like the idea of the Puma and the broad niche it fills more than the reality? Maybe it's popular because it's not in the armour section? I can't think of an underrated unit. Most underpriced units are used to death. I like seeing Marders though. It means your opponent is willing to really WORK for a victory. Not just stick a tank on a hill.

  6. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Sergeant Saunders: Question: Test I just ran, 3 Glider Battalions. They lost over 1200 casualties (560 KIA). The looking at the bunkers KIA reports NONE of them showed any enemy kills????<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Answer: Sarge, you are insane
  7. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Sergeant Saunders: "Playable" so far it is all or nothing. Are they flanked or is it front penetrations? just curious...

It will be a real challenge to make that one playable...i'd like to see how you do it! thanks tecumseh@ihug.co.nz
  9. Interesting old thread. I cannot believe no one pointed out this: Each pillbox has two cone-shaped areas on either side that it cannot target, but from which it's front slit can still be targeted by the enemy. To KO a pillbox, just put a tank there. After a few shots, no more pillbox.
  10. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Yosoce: a 700 pt combined arm force, any type.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> If my life depended on the win: At 700 points I would definately request Axis and buy a 120mm mortar spotter, light guns and infantry. If i felt like armour i would buy the StuH42. No vehicles. As allies the dilemma for me would be American or British. Americans can not field big arty for 700pt CA, but british infantry is weak, and weighed down by additional crap. i'd either take British centered around a cromwell IV and arty, or american infantry massed and supported by M8s. In either case i would buy a cheap MG recon vehicle too. The obvious thing to avoid would be powerful AT stuff, because there will be no big tanks. Otherwise, for fun, I'd just take computer picks or try something new. Like some rockets, volksturm and a veteran hotchkiss
  11. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by GenSplatton: I believe if there was no such thing as a ladder, and if people just played for the fun of it, 90% of the threads on this board that relate to "gaminess" wouldn't ever have appeared.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Personally i disagree. As i said before, i wish more top ladder players would post to this forum. Then we'd get more threads that were informative, on-topic and about playing the game,.. and less whining, flaming and pouting. I guess the problem is these guys are too busy playing to bother. anyways... I think players are being put off ladder games unnecessarily. My experience with TH ladder has been very positive. Everyone i have played has been relaxed friendly and fair. Pre-game discussions involve an email or two each..usually a mention of CAL rules, a ban on flak trucks, and that's it. I am now playing a game against the mighty Jeb, and he has bought quite a few M8s and its great fun blowing them up one by one
  12. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by tecumseh: i think there would be less anti-technician flaming here than on the main forum.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> ....or maybe not
  13. It would be great to see more posts to this forum from technicians. i think there would be less anti-tec flaming here than on the main forum. BTW, when are you gonna lose a game Wreck? Then i will get the highest winning run on TH,...at least for a day...
  14. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Chad Harrison: so why dont we buy more of them? or do we?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> See that guy Wreck with like 20 straight wins at the top of TH ladder? He is the patron saint of M8s. IIRC he has stated on this forum that he'll buy a Jackson, a Priest, and then spend the rest of his armor points on M8s. They crawl over the map like an evil, open-topped plague... and if yr playing CAL and have a limit on guns they are hell to face.
  15. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Soddball: Took forever though.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> FOREVER. I was part of a group of fools quite a few years ago who put out new missions for F/A-18 Hornet by using nothing but hex code. Looking back, man i can't believe i had the patience.
  16. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Rollstoy: There are programs called "Hex-Editors" that enable you to view the .exe file byte for byte.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Yup. Its pretty boring, SenorBeef. And no, you can't get your opponent's password...its encrypted
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by panzerwerfer42: The 7/2 is in there.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Yeah you're right. And it is the Flakpanzer 38(t) too. Plus i missed: sd Kfz 10/4 Flak vehicle Horch light command car Complete list my arse.
  18. I know little about WW2 and the names mean nothing to me, but grogs may be interested in this. These are the vehicle names in CM's raw code that are not associated with a model. I guess at some point BTS considered including these. Sd Kfz 7/2 Flak vehicle Sd Kfz 6/2 Flak vehicle Brummbar Mobelwag Panzer IIIF Marder I Sd Kfz 135/2 SPH 4.7cm PaK auf Pzkw 35R(f) Sd Kfz 2 Kelten Kraftrad PSW 222 PSW 232 8-Rad PSW 233 PSW 234/4 armoured support car sIG 33/1 Grille sIG 33/2 auf Jpz 38(t) Sturmtiger Aufklarer Flakpanzer Stuart I Valentine Tetrarch Tetrarch CS Locust (i may have made a spelling mistake or two)
  19. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Warmaker: It's pretty imperative to keep as much of your forces within C&C. The command delays for units in/out of C&C is just too big to ignore.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Yeah like i said, when you are ready to give the reserve infantry some orders, get the HQ back to them. But for the first half of the game keep the reserve platoons hidden at the back and use their HQs foward a bit, commanding guns etc... I see no need to keep a reserve platoon in CandC if they are away from the action, as long as the HQ is <1 turn away. No revelation,..but it has helped my game a bit.
  20. Another obvious thing i only recently started doing: When hiding your reserve infantry platoons at the back, don't put the platoon leader with them. It's a waste. Instead put him in CandC of guns, mortars and MGs...later in the game when your reserve is ready to go into the battle, spend the extra turn withdrawing the leader back to his men. Those CandC bonuses are GOLD. An HQ with heaps of bonuses is perfect as the reserve HQ because he might have his long-reaching effects on an AT gun, a flak gun, and a couple of mortars for the first 3/4, and then on the infantry platoon that rushes the flag in the last 1/4. To increase the odds of getting this well-endowed guy i buy at least 1 vet platoon. Post more gamey strategies!
  21. Hey Toad...I would go with the wall. Walls and guns together rock! Concealment when hiding behind a wall is very good for a gun...do a test and take a look. It is better than hiding close to the edge of woods. And when you choose to unhide, you have more protection than being at the edge of woods, better defence against small arms and arty, and when the gun gets "pinned" it goes back to being very well concealed - sometimes tanks lose site of the gun again. Concealment is obviously better deeper in woods, but as Wolfe says, it is way worse for gun accuracy and usually a bad idea.
  22. Yeah it looks normal. The intro line is there, and so is the last line. In between is the usual looking giberish. i've just tried surrendering to myself in PBEM in two fake games and it all worked fine. So i think that: a) its a bug its just one of those things where a bit got flipped somewhere along the line that stopped the final email file working correctly. c) my opponent changed some numbers in the file so I could not see the AAR for some reason (he's embarrased, he's using a strat etc) since there hasn't been a sea of people saying "oh that happened to me" then i can safely rule A out...that was the purpose of my post. i'll be positive and go with B. Thanks for yr interest kmead [ 04-28-2001: Message edited by: tecumseh ]
  23. Hi kmead I hit 'load email file', find the file, hit OK, and the open file dialog box dissapears, but CM doesn't proceed to 'loading 3D graphics',... instead it just stays on that screen with the email and TCP/IP game buttons, like its rejected the file. There is no crash...CM works fine from that point on. No error message or nuttin. i'll experiment some more and see if I can replicate it with another file.
  24. My PBEM opponent surrendered, sent the file to me, but i never make it to "loading 3D graphics"...CM does nothing when I open the file. I asked him to resend it and the same thing happened. Anyone had anything like this? I have an imac running 9.1 and CM has had no problems ever before (like, none! big time sotware indeed). Thanks!
