  2. I would think that it goes without saying that an auto-cannon like a 20mm would be far more effective than a single shot cannon of any caliber. How many 20mm need to get thru the slit before the crew is turned into chunky salsa? IIRC, they DID address this in CMBB, but I'm at work so I can't check the readme file or manual. SM
  3. JasonC has a neat idea (which I've yet to try) of an alternate "firebase." Take two M5A1 HT's (.30cal and .50), and use them to transport either 4 M1917 HMG's or maybe 3 w/ an HQ would be better. Drop off the HMGs/HQ at the back of some good cover, then walk them up until they get LOS to targets, then bring the M5A1's around the sides back so you have MUCHO MG firepower. The same idea would be very deadly in CMBB, though it presents a fine target in either game.
  4. Americans always have the .50cal in CMBO. Their stats differ greatly: mg fp@100m ammo movement speed M1919 84 65 medium M1917 95 ~100+? slow .50cal 110 40 slow .50cal is powerful but has so little ammo; it can of course destroy light tanks and halftracks... from the side/rear out to as much as 1000m, and maybe 400-600 frontally, depending on if you're shooting at a SPW (thin front)or a PSW Armored Car (thick front). .50cal can even kill AFV that have the Panzer IV chassis if you're super-close and shooting directly at the rear. Main advantage of M1919 is it's speed, and cheapness- you might as well buy two and have them just walk to keep up w/ your advance. MG42 can kill halftracks too, out to about 300m if you are perpendicular to the target. The first time I tried that I killed two M5 HT's at 250m, which was sweet b/c my other AT assets were already dead. [ April 03, 2003, 02:04 PM: Message edited by: Silvio Manuel ]
  5. Sharpshooters are also good for getting mortar crews to abandon the mortar, or for routing any slow-moving heavy weapons crew while they are moving in the open (i.e. on the attack). They are too valuable to waste for no gain, so don't let them get killed as they are worth about a whole squad just for the one dead-eye rifleman.

  7. Take a look at my AAR (after action report): Hill 312 AAR Use LOTS of area fire w/ the HMGs, even if you don't have so much as a sound contact in the trenches, just pound them for many turns, and add the 81mm mortars when you have good targets. Use Advance when crossing open ground, and use Rifle teams (squads split using the split-squad command) as the "lead scout" when 'advancing' across open ground so that they find minefields and enemy infantry. Leave the bulk of your squads intact (not split). Don't forget that the Tank Hunter team can use it's demo charges by getting to about 25-30m (but not closer) to the target and then using "area fire, use explosives" w/ the normal target command. 8. Nice one Lawngnome. I think you can only do that kind of carnage in CMBB using Extreme FOW. In CMBO, it would be far easier to have the enemy spot your 150mm IG and take it out; w/ E-FOW it can fire away for far longer w/o being spotted.. 9. Ram Kangaroo: from this website for the 1st Canadian Armoured Carrier Regiment.
  10. No, but I just D/L'ed and loaded them and they look great! I was going to say thanks a lot, but uh.... Cheers!
  11. So who has good mods for the Pillbox, Bunker, and CMBO's Ram Kangaroo? I can't find them anywhere, just broken links. Thanks! SM

  13. von Khan, There is one "magic" number to know when trying to figure which tanks are more accurate: MUZZLE VELOCITY!! The higher the M.V., the more accurate the gun, since optics are not modeled. So consider these M.V.s': Sherman 619 Panzer IV 750 StuG 770 Tiger I **773** Puma 850 Firefly **885* Panther 925 (and Panzer IV-70A) Tiger II 1018 (and Nashorn, PaK43, etc.) So Tiger is easily out-shot by Fireflies. The Tiger I's flat armor is quite out-dated by June 1944, since the Firefly's 17pdr gun can kill it even without Tungsten, at common CM ranges.
  14. reinald, Yeah I don't like facing Elites either- which, granted are rare in the field. But you get the same effect if the scenario designer used the %-Chance-to-be-Fanatical feature, and you just have to exterminate some steely squad on your flank w/ 5 darned tanks shooting at it, or better yet a flamethrower since that's the only thing that can rout Elites and Fanatics.
  15. Word around the campfire is that the AT model for CMBO is only effective out to about 1500m or so, after that the results you'll see are not really accurate... I'm not sure if BFC admits this but it is the general consensus, AFAIK. I would think that this is surely corrected for CMBB.
  16. Adding Exp.levels really affects the final score too, far more than adding more % of troops (i.e. +25%). AFAIK, when you kill a Regular unit that has been boosted up +3 to Elite, it is still counted as a Regular unit in points, not the Elite cost. So if you add +200%, and the AI stupidly loses all those extra troops, it REALLY hurts its score. But if it loses the normal % of Regular troops, boosted up to Elite, it only loses Regular points.
  17. Dandelion, Is there some link you could give me that shows what units did/did not have certain tank types? CMMOS has me confused for CMBO b/c it appears that if a certain tank wasn't historically present in a unit, then you can't apply the CMMOS unit markers to it, BUT it doesn't tell you that the application did not work. It's quite frustrating. Plz feel free to e-mail me or else respond here. kevinmst@yahoo.com Thanks, Kevin
  18. It's interesting to me how one can (sort of) exploit FOW to actually divine real info. If you see 4 inf. units advancing, and 3 say "Infantry squad?" and one says "Infantry?" usually that 4th one is the HQ... they seem to be FOW-represented as only "infantry" and maybe never as "infantry squad?". Of course, he might be a spotter (though would that be "crew?") or some other unit (half squad maybe).
  19. As far as CMMOS goes, and w/ all due respect to the artists, the only CMMOS SS unis I like are Andrew TF's grey (fav) and brown (2nd fav) feldgrau SS unis. I also sometimes use Jorge MC's Waffen SS "elite uni #3" which is a blue/black/green camo pattern IIRC. So what do you guys use? I'm looking for something similar to Big DD's SS uni in CMMOS... I really want one that looks like the the camo the SS use in Saving Pvt. Ryan. So what's your fav/ what SS uni do you use? I like the other German CMMOS uni choices, esp. Michael Dorosch's tan/water (reddish in color) Heer uni. Maybe I'll just have to rename those files by hand and convert them to SS (so SS at least has a good camo uni) and then use some other one for Heer. Thanks, SM [ February 21, 2003, 11:59 AM: Message edited by: Silvio Manuel ]
  20. Wow, great frckn idea Fuerte!! It's amazing that it's taken this long for someone to come up with something that apparently isn't even rocket science to code! (though it's quite advanced for my humble brain) I'll drop in again in a few days and maybe give it a try. Cheers! SM
  21. Keke, Nice shootin' Tex!! OTOH, this may spawn a contest w/ high quality tanks attacking hordes of conscript tanks to see how many can be killed in a short time in a 2000 pure armor QB. Or maybe not.
  22. BUMP! A nice list, though combatmission.com has all the tasty CMMOS-compatible downloads.
  23. I tried the Guards Armored setting and it worked!! Thanks Phillipe. I had been playing vs. a Polish armored opponent and then with 11th AD in another, so I had never tried Guards. Thanks again.
