  1. Thx Maxiimus. I've opened EA and the first tab on the left is marked 'Master'. I've set it to forest (which is now listed to the right of the 'reverb' icon). I presume I need do no more. There is a slider at the bottom and at the moment the reverb icon is set at 10% (default?), do I need this any higher?

Also, having made the links on the start bar, I presume I don't have to worry about the 'Environments' tab on the creative launcher bar being set to 'I want to play a game with etc.'

  2. Excellent - thanks very much. Have they changed the Launcher perhaps. I can't find Live task anywhere. Got the others though.

When I open it up I get four tabs: Master, source, midi and options. Under those I get reverb, chorus and original sound. Which should I set to Forest and under which tabs?

  3. Has anyone had any trouble with the new Minefield markers posted at the CM HQ site? They look good in the pic but having downloaded them I have tried a variety of ways to get them into the bmp file (mod manager and drag/drop) but nothing happens. I still get the original white markers, whether I'm placing mines or encountering them.

  4. I have the same config as you. I downloaded the latest 3dfx driver (1.07.00 or something like that) from their site. Then I loaded DX8 from MS and it all works fine now. My smoke effects were rubbish on 'high quality' too. This sorted it.

I queried the 'verified' problem with Schrullenhaft on this forum, he is well up on these things and basically said it doesn't matter that the FX drivers are not 'verified' under DX8. You should be able to do a search under Tech Support using my 'name' and it should bring up the query and responses. Hope this helps

PS - 3DFx stress the need to put in their drivers first and then DX8, not other way round.

  5. I put this query here as it is not too 'techy' and the tech forum doesn't seem to get quite as much attention as this.

When I bought my PC, SB1024L was pre-installed and I got no docs etc with it. There is a help file which isn't that brilliant.

I've not really touched the settings on it from day one and the sound seems fine to me. Is there a set-up process that I should go through with it though, to make sure I'm getting the best sound out of the game? I have 4 sat speakers and and s/woofer. The 'Creative' launcher has a lot of tabs on it for things like 'environments' and I get a few games showing up in there, only one of which I've got (Age of Empires II). Should I be tweaking this at all. I did a search on the forum and found comments regarding the 'Forest' setting under environments. When I use that Env tab I get nothing like Forests or Mountains, all I get is 'I want to' options (eg play a game etc.) and followed by a number of game options. Where is 'Forests'?

    Any help much appreciated.

  6. I mainly post this for anyone new to modding who, like me, is perhaps a little reluctant to get started. I have not had the game that long and reluctantly stopped playing recently to do some modding. I was a little dubious about this but was aware of the immense difference these mods can make.

My main problem is that I wanted to put a few (thirty plus actually) mods in at once. I use a PC and was a bit concerned about the modmanager programme. I even needed to post a few queries, for peace of mind.

I decided to take the plunge and after I'd installed the manager and its 'f' patch I downloaded all the mods I wanted for the first run. I got the info on this 'cocktail' from here, CM HQ, CM Outpost, Desert Fox and Combat-missions.net. I was tempted to use the drag and drop method of copying the files across once downloaded (and unzipped) but with 30 mods to do this would be a chore. I was mainly interested in sound fx and terrain at first, vehicles I can do any time. Anyway, I hit 'full install' from the mod manager and after about 2-3 minutes they were all in and I launced my brand new version of CMBO, and what a sight/sound it was!!!! (I did bang in a few vehicles too).

So, if you are a newbie to modding, give the modmanager a spin. The main thing I like about it is that it lets you install a load of mods in one go and, if you want to tinker with your mods, you can just untick the ones you want to leave out and hit install again, even if only to go back to the original game files. As time progresses I can see me have a hell of a lot more mods, making the drag/drop option even more of pain (well, for me anyway, why do it yourself when a programme can do it - that's what they're for).

One minor point, for those talented enough to design these mods, it may be a help, particularly when discussing some of the 'cocktails' of terrain that many people use, to indicate what order people should install them, even if only to say 'it doesn't matter what order you put them in'. Those new to modding may not be aware that they may not get the same results if they put them in the wrong way round.

  7. I have taken quite a few hard copies of replies off the forum, for ease of reference. Can anyone tell me though - is it possible to print them in such a way that they use less paper and ink? At the moment I get copies of web-pages and have tried 'save as text' etc., all to no avail. Is there a way to save the docs either as Word or PDFs that can then be printed?

  8. Thx folks. I uninstalled and re-installed OE and it's fine now. Probably re-wrote to the registry file once I did that. May well dabble with the suggested browser/mail changes in the future.

Im still on IE5.00.2614. Have heard some bad press about 5.5. I had it on the cover of a computer mag and when I installed it on a laptop I had no end of problems and had to uninstall it and re-install OE from another CD. OE was taking an absolute age to open with 5.5. Maybe an update from the MS site would be better? Still, in the absence of it offering me much more I see little point in risking another day lost piddling around with IE/OE.

  9. Can someone answer these queries before I hit 'install' pse?

    1) I did a full install of the game from CD to hard drive. I presume I'll still need to copy the Core CD files to the Mod folder in CMBO though?

    2) Once I've done this I can delete the Core CD zip icon I believe?

    3) I've put Core files at bottom of Modmanager list with BTS updates above them. I have then put MDMP 1 & 2 above them in that order. I have copied the wav and bmp folders as a back up. Am I correct in thinking I only have to tick the MDMP packs to install?

    4) If so, what's the point of the full install options? When am I likely to need it?

    5) I downloaded the 1.0f patch for ModManager too. The readme says to copy the .exe file over the existing one. All I did was copy that folder into the CMBO/Mod folder and used that to create the link which i sent to the desktop. Is that right? A saw a similar post on this a few days ago but can't find it now.

    Thx

  10. I am getting a bit p****d off with this now. I have had a point put in so I can connect the desktop to the net for CMBO downloads and use of this forum. I use the e-mail faicility here quite a bit too. However, on my laptop I have no problems but on this thing!!!

When I open IE5 and go to 'read mail' - promptly nothing happens. I go to 'tools', 'options' etc. and when I get to 'e-mail program' the only option it offers me is the crappy outlook, despite express being installed. I then open express and go through the same procedure there and where it says 'make this default e-mail programme' I hit yes, 'apply' and 'close' and when I open it up again it says 'this is not your default programme!!!!!

I am tempted now to uninstall the bloody lot, IE5 and OE and start again and maybe these damned programmes will recognise each other and do what they're supposed to, rather than just lay dormant!!! Any help much appreciated. It may save a fist going through my monitor.
