  1. Now this made me wonder. Am I only seeing parts of all the game grapical effects? I have an old Voodoo II card. It runs ok unless you start to rotate a large map. Could someone please post a few screenshots of some of the effect you get with the best graphic cars?
  2. I also would have never bought the game if you couldn´t play against the computer. I haven´t tried PBEM or TCP/IP, even though I will when I get a bit more familiar with CM (only had it for about a month). What I would like to see is an AI which is dynamic, i.e. can adapt to the situation and which learns from its mistakes. I´d love to see an AI built on a neural network, not on a few thousand lines of if-elses. Throw in a simulated memory, and the AI could become a very hard enemy to beat. I know it is nest to impossible to program such an AI, but maybe in CM 10?
  3. Still it feels a bit strange. Consider this situation: Company commander: Sherman! Move up that hill and engage any threatening target as soon as you see one. Sherman: Yes, sir! Company commander: MG team! Move 10 meters uphill, then do whatever you like but don´t move an inch. I´ll give you new orders in exactly one minute. MG team (after 20 seconds): Ok, now we are here but can´t see ****. He should have told us to move 5 meters further. I´ll guess we´ll just wait here, then.
  4. I don´t agree. The right way of rescuing hostages are by discussing and waiting. I guess we wouldn´t see much of that on TV.
  5. Another vote for the infantry hunt command. Should also apply to MG:s and mortars. I find I spend quite some time manouvering my machine guns and mortars to find the right spot at a hill or in between woods to get a good LOS to the enemy. It would be much easier to just order them to hunt foward up the hill or through the woods than moving them 10 meters and then find out they still are not in LOS.
  6. Sorry if I wasn´t clear enough. Second try. Situation: my infantry fast moves trough some woods into a building which I believed was empty, but when my two squads enter they find an arty FO, which is killed within 10 seconds. The FO hasn´t fired any arty at all (this is in the beginning of the battle). When I select the dead FO (the dead body on the ground), it just says arty FO. But when I click enter, the ugly black box pops up and says "140mm off-map arty". How the heck can my men know that? I guess its possible the FO while he got a burst of bullets through his chest screamed into his radio "Get those 140mm pieces firing already!", but since the fog of war is pretty thick most of the time, I think it would be more realistic to just have the box say off-map arty FO, nothing more.
  7. Not entirely on topic, but I have another newbie question: how come you know what kind of arty enemy FO:s spot for? In a recent QB i stumbled over an enemy FO which I promptly eliminated. When I then opened the details box of it, it said something like "Main gun: 140mm off-map arty". It might not make much a difference in scenarios, but in QB:s you always know how many points the enemy has, and if you know exactly what kind of arty you just killed, it is easy to calculate if the enemy has any arty left.
  8. I can´t remember where I first heard about CM, but I read a few reviews of it on the net last December. This led me to Battlefront´s home page, and I immediately saw this was something for me. I have played both board games (mainly the Europa series) and RPG:s, but rarely do it nowadays (I would say about one weekend per year) because of limited time. But I can well use one-two hours a day in front of the computer instead of watching some crappy TV show. I ordered CM right away - I didn´t bother to test the demo. And I´m not disappointed. Soon I will be ready for PBEM-ing.
  9. I would say that playing against the AI is a bit too easy. I´ve only had this game for less than a month, and I already have no problem beating it, no matter if I play Axis or Allies, or attack or defense. I guess most of you feel that this is no problem, since you think everybody anyway plays PBEM or TCP/IP-games. But I´m positive there are lots of gamers out there who for one reason or another prefer to play against the AI.
  10. Ok, this is a pretty old thread, but I just had a similar thing happen to me. I was playing a scenario (as allies) where a german Tiger controlled a large part of the battlefield. I had three Churchills, but the terrain made it impossible for them to flank the Tiger. So they mostly hid behind a hill while my infantry were advancing on the side with a few PIAT teams. I ordered one of my tanks to move a little to be able to shell a house with some germans in it, but to my annoyance it moved into LOS of the Tiger (yes, I am a newbie). And what happens? While the Tiger slowly moves its turret, the Churchill (regular) fires one shot: "front turret penetration - weak spot". Halleluja!
  11. I´m pacifist in the sense that I believe there is no place for war in the world of today. The rules of economy have made wars too costly to fight, and the strong traditions of nation states have made conquering territory impossible. Take China for example. They have a massive army and lots of weapons. They have (in our western opinion) a political system which we don´t accept. Still, the risk of China fighting a war is minimal, because neither they or we can afford it. The reason we see wars in Africa is that they neither have a strong sense of nationality, nor a democratic tradition, and most important - their economy is already bankrupt. They (=the dictator) have nothing to lose.
