  1. Searched around already and didn't see anything on this, did see the LOS stuff so was ready for that . But not this... In the tutorial on assaults (last trench), it says flank with the tanks and assault one flank with your inf. Be careful as now the enemy will be more active and counter attack any trench you take. Who are they kidding, I can't get my inf anywhere close to the trenches let alone assault them. It's always tanks flank, tanks kill everything, inf advances and takes empty trenches. Even the second trench was basically like this. In the first trench I almost got in, but really the last trench defender died from tank support fire just as my SMGs got in. Not enough suppression to keep heads down and have my inf get close enough to assault, too much killing instead so trench gets cleaned out without assaulting. What am I missing here. Bad tutorial? Written before some late game tweaks were done to break the tutorial (make it incorrect). Bad demo? The full game plays differently? Help, and thanks. Tonto.
  2. Hello, see this issue is still floating around so thought I'd post this (not my idea btw). It looks a little ugly but if you must have AA on (like me) you can edit the TEXT BMP files and change the background colour so the text DOES show up with AA on. In your BMP dir, edit 0.bmp 1.bmp 2.bmp (make backups) and use paint or whatever util and colour fill to change white background (I use dark green) to something else. Get rid of all the white. Now when you have AA on, the text will look pretty nasty but at least you can read it and your tanks will looks nice and smooth P. [ June 11, 2003, 12:47 AM: Message edited by: Tontoman ]
  3. Hello, just tried my first opertation (the first listed operation, Russian 21st counterattack) and ran into a problem I haven't hit before with QB's. Played Axis (defender) The Operation is 4 battles at 50!! turns each. First battle I won easily. Second one was at night and again won but with lots of close range inf fighting (as it's night) which burned off all my ammo. Battle 3 comes around and I'v got most of my troops with little ammo. Tried to ambush only and keep battles short, but by turn 30 (which is a full length QB) I'm out and it's basically over. Now I wish they had a stockpile feature. Fall back to ammo stockpiles! So what are you meant to do? Not fight at night and just retreat to conserve ammo? Thanks Pete.
  4. Both as my old PC can only play small BB games before it bogs like a tank in mud . As someone else mentioned I wish I could get BO with BB's engine too. T.
  5. Maybe customs Canada is playing it I ordered mine Sept 26 order #92144 and got it a week ago (Win version) in Toronto. T.
  6. Thanks for the tips. But the case I was talking about it's a SMALL attack so I could only afford one or two ATG s(expecially with the combined forces forcing you to spend points on fortifications). But with small battles and light armor buying 4 large ATGs is not an option. The high rate of fire doesn't seem to make that much diff. Just means it pumps in an extra 6 shells even if the first was a KO instead of 3. In CMBO it was more deadly as each quick shot could mean another dead tank. After 4 penetrations into a stopped non firing tank please switch to the other one that's just now lining me up. I like the deathclock as it tones down what I thought were too effective ATGs (tanks always seemed overly fragile to me in CMBO) but I feel it's gone the other way. I'd like to keep the deathclock for sure, but would like to add an AI switch target if tank motion&firing have stopped. I guess it's just the feeling I get when through good work I achive the desired ambush with multiple ememy tanks with their side armor to my ATG and I only net one tank. This happens more often (as far as I'v seen) than the good multi kill results. Maybe less of a prob in CM2 with individual spotting (instead of the borg variety we have now) slowing down the other tanks responses T. [ October 16, 2002, 06:45 PM: Message edited by: Tontoman ]
  7. It's small AT's I'm using (37 mm) VS light armor. What I'm finding is that if you ambush 2+ tanks (they both have LOS to you) you are probably only going to get one (and that's 50-50). I get a couple of clean penetrations and then I'm suppressed and later killed and if I'm lucky one of those shots did knock it out. I'm playing small assaults to test the ambush arcs and other things and have found that a 20mm AC is better than a 37mm AC as it can be moved around and (with luck) ambush single tanks at a time avoiding the deathclock locking you to an already dead tank while it's buddy kills you. I like the death clock to but I can't help it that I'm already thinking of ways to avoid it. Guess what I would like (against multiple targets) is that after a good penetration or two, if the enemy tank is NOT responding (firing back/moving) then have the AI switch to another target that is KNOWN to be still alive. If it's firing/moving sure keep punching hole in it my all means . If both are stopped but not visably KO'd then keep pumping the shells into either one. I just don't like the AT or tank pumping the 8th shell into a tank while it's buddy calmly lines you up. If I was a gunner I'd switch as soon as the original target ceased to respond. T. 8. Probably just me but after CMBO where in some unit choice rules AT guns had to be have some transportation (to add to the cost), I'm wondering if they are worth the points in CMBB. Maybe it's just my usage but so many times I'v had an AT get a hit or two, not get a knockout and never gets another shot due to suppression. Quite different from the 2-3 tank kills from one ambush in CMBO. I like the difference but I'm not sure if they are worth the points now? Better to buy AT armor? T.
  9. I'v haven't got the full CMBB yet but I'd buy a reworked CMBO with the CMBB engine from what I'v seem so far. If I get really hooked on the CMBB rules it's sad that I won't (or find it hard) to play some Western front games . With the deathclock and harder to kill tanks it would make CMBO more like the stories you read in the history books. Tigers will benefit from their all around thick armor, easily brewed Shermans will make a real diff as it's easy to see a knockout (no choice to stay in the tank then ). Tigers will finally be the tough and feared tank instead of the pretty easily knocked out tank it's in CMBO (as everyone seems to buy 76 upgraded Shermans ) IMHO Pete.
  10. Hello, I remember way back talk about a util that would randomize the last turn of a game (help prevent last turn flag rushing). I'v looked around but can't find anything. Is it around or is my memory going? Many thanks Pete.
  11. If you can find one for cheap you could even get a Voodoo5 and wait for the GF3 to get cheaper (if you really want one in the end). The company has gone bust now (so it should be really cheap, make sure you can find drivers) but it's FSAA is the best. Too slow for FPS games (using AA) but for something like CM the 4X FSAA is amazing. I couldn't play CM with out FSAA ... well I could but I'd hate it. T.
  12. It's definately worth sticking with it. I found that saving often and then going back and replaying a certain part again and again using different tactics helped me. If you try different ideas under nearly the same conditions, it's easier to tell what works and what doesn't work. VERY usefull for tinkering with ambushes T.
  13. Digging this up but it just happened to me with v1.12. Just one of those weird things that probably won't happen again? Thanks T.
  14. Yeah Michael, but back in those days wasn't beer a nickel? Due to a B-day present of a model tank (think it's all my CM talk gave him the gift idea) I'v gotten back into models. Think I'm going to make my fav tanks have have them around my PC while I play . T.
  15. Great, I don't check the board for a couple of days and look what I miss (what I get for playing too much CM). If you have any slots I'm in (I'm fine for playing Germans if you need more to fill in) Ahh, sit back with a beer and light up a Sherman peteal@sympatico.ca
  16. Just got a tank model for my B-day, it's been years since I'v done a model. I want to see just how good I can do (before I was just an impatient kid ) and need tips and tricks to do a good job. Any hobby sites out there for painting models. Thanks in adv Tonto.
  17. Yep, you would have my many many thanks!! Tonto. (the man who has 10 CMBO BMP backup directories for all my setups)
  18. That's weird. How did my cut text end up in Russellmz's post?
  19. Cut from TANKBOOKS.COM (pretty good reading) You could use this as a Darwin award. <<Now, the first tank we had, behind the driver and the assistant driver there was a cubbyhole for shells for the 75-millimeter gun. But every time you wanted one of them, you’d skin your knuckles trying to get them out of there, so we never used it. Instead we would pile the extra ammunition on the turret floor.>>
  20. I'm sure this has been asked many times but I did a search on this and didn't find any info other than that you can't look at the hard details when buying equipment. This was an old post. So is there anyway to view either outside the game or while doing your purchasing to view the database CM has? The info is there when you are playing.. why can't you get to it elsewhere? I don't know all the weapons off by heart so have no idea if that little armoured card with the smallish looking gun is a problem or not Thanks T.
  21. Wouldn't tank NOT want to get this close to troops unless they were moving at speed or had infantry support. An unsupported tank moving slowly is begging to be crawled on and having a machine gun emptied into one of its vision slits. Sure there is a bunch of other nasty things that could be done (grenade in the exhaust pipe?) even with troops that didn't have AT weapons. T.
  22. I found it best if you do the following. 1) get them in position BEFORE the tank comes around. It takes some guesswork but it's much better than running around with that huge pipe that says 'shoot me'. Best is on reverse slopes (bottom of a hill that the tank will be silueted on when he moves over the crest) as you are less likely to be spotted by any enemy troops who also might be around. You got to pick your spot, maybe even lure the tank into the area you want. 2) Button the tank! Get a machine gun to target it. First this buttons the tank and second machine guns seem high on the list of the tanks food chain.. so they will target it. Yes it sucks for the machine gunner but thats life. Ambush the tank while it has target and buttoned. So if you guy is hiding (he should be) order him to target the tank (if he doesn't do it himself) while the tank is buttoned and engaged with another target. Seems to work well but don't know if the games makes the tank 'look' around less if it's engaged for a fact.
