1. '...2000 years ago. I was here." Scene with Omar B. and George P. at the Carthagenian Battlefield. ------------------ "Your in it now -up to your neck! You got me in the mood to using this thing...I'll use it on you!" [This message has been edited by Radar (edited 12-30-2000).]
2. Hey doesn't anybody remember Sahara with Bogart? That is a classic. Yes it is a bit Hollywood, but hey, so what? The Guns of Naverone is another classic. The display of the 'inferior' (there is obvious long odds to victory) allied forces holding together and turning the tide despite the upperhand held by the Axis forces is what makes them great. I think the Cross of Iron is another good movie, as is the Dirty Dozen. ------------------ Run in circles, scream and shout...Brown side in, green side out...
3. Scipio..Ya, I was confused for a bit about it too. You can get your Infantry units to use their demo packs on buildings if the building is occupied by the enemy, you just area target the building and plot movement...its performed during a close assault. A tactic I had used on me while I was supporting an attack for a VL was to be assaulted by several units at once...they blew the building and my troopies sky high! ------------------ Run in circles, scream and shout...Brown side in, green side out... 4. I want to add my name to the list of happy campers. Thank you for an outstanding product BTS and all! I've gotten hooked since the first time I tried the demo. I even had to get myself the full version for a very early Christmas. I can't imagine trying to wait, too cruel! ------------------ Run in circles, scream and shout...Brown side in, green side out...
5. I have had success using 20mm AA guns on tanks . The high ROF means more chance of a critical hit. A hit on the track will make even a Super Pershing immobile! The cost is cheap too (a bonus)! ------------------ Run in circles, scream and shout...Brown side in, green side out...
6. JaJa, I do speak from experience...I worked in the FDC for the USMC. I currently work as a surveyor (another part of the field). What he is suggesting is VERY complicated. The individual crew isn't likely to have the tools to calculate and execute an indirect fire mission. Now, direct sight firing is not the same , and crews have trainning in methods for ranging and direction. As for my book reference (I still can't recall the title , if someone could help please!), JaJa in it you will find several examples of mortor crews and how they deployed. 7. JaJa, try this on your own.. go outside and point to the house four blocks away over your shoulder and picture where the front door would be. Now tell your mortor crew to hit that. What ? Thats about what you are trying to suggest...Ok you want a FM in the trees, say 442m away ... or behind the buildings across town, now let me say that unless you have a 'sight'(distance and direction) on the target (yes, LOS is right, without the FDC all you have is the ability of the crew to direct their own fire.) firing at targets out of view would mostly be a waste of time. I read a book years ago about a mortor crewman fighting in the Pacific for the Marines. It is an excellent book, yet at this moment I can't recall the title(maybe someone can help). ------------------ Run in circles, scream and shout...Brown side in, green side out...
8. Hey for you die hards..set your VCR to record it so there can be no excuse not to watch it.. ------------------ Run in circles, scream and shout...Brown side in, green side out... [This message has been edited by Radar (edited 12-16-2000).]
9. Yes, but your over simplifying the threat..Sats (not just for pictures anymore), missle (all types) fire, and especially Arty are part of the modern battlefield and not to be looked on lightly, not to mention ballistic computers and such...I like the idea of it though.. ------------------ Run in circles, scream and shout...Brown side in, green side out...
10.
quote:
Originally posted by M. Bates: I agree, there needs to be far more control over fire power. It's all very well saying this is 'micro-management' but that won't get your troops very far after they have run out of ammo at 15 turns of play. Also, artillery should be 'staggered' by pressing 'P'. This would add 5 seconds to the time it takes for the artillery to fall. This at least is an idea which would be easy to implement.

The size of a Arty FFE (fire for effect) mission depends on the target...mg pos, plt, Co, etc., it would be a number of battery rounds to suppress the target size...(something like that..) a new fire mission would need to be called (or adjustment)to continue firing..ROF also has a place here..dependant on the size of the gun..sustained fire wouldn't be more than one round per tube per min,(probably far less) under the best conditions...(there is a lot of work to do)..but the typical FM would have the rounds fused and standing by for rapid response..
11.
quote:
Originally posted by Thermopylae: Actually, the maps would not have to be huge, or even beyond the 1 km squared type of thing...In these situations armor and such would be pretty much limited by the battlefield to fighting it out at 1km or less...and the infantrymen would be more than a line of AT rockets in the MLR as would be more the case in open scenarios.

Recon and missle tracking...Arty..AWAC intel, SATs... all from great ranges..a bigger picture would have to be addressed to be realistic..1km is puny in these conditions.
12. Well, this isn't my first tcp/ip experience using AOL. But it is the first time I have used AOL 6.0 for a tcp/ip. Let me say that I couldn't host a game using the AOL adapter as I would if I had AOL 5.0. With AOL 6.0 all I need to do is run the winipcfg.exe file and read the PPP adaptor address...this is all that is needed to host your Combat Mission session. Before with AOL 5.0 after running the winipcfg file you would need to switch to the AOL adaptor and use that to host a game...ect.,etc.
