  1. I need some help for good friend of mine...That's his question : Are you familiar with the OS issues? I experience difficulties with my PC, as it returned now from the lab, for the second time. I have a P166MHz as CPU together with OS Win98. Also I saw there are many programs running in the background, and I tried to identify them and close them. In my 'System Tray' - 'Close Program' dialogue box - I have few Unidentified programs, running in the background, (probably consuming system resources), and when I clear them, I find difficulties in operating the OS Windows 98. These Unidentified programs are: - Fppdis1a - Poproxy - Hgcctl95 - Csinject - Systry Would you happen to know what are these Unidentified programs? Please let me know. I have identified all the others, and closed the unnecessary ones. And still I experience difficulties as a very slow performance (in simple matters as opening folders and files in the Explorer, and in opening programs). Thanks,

  4. What a coincidence ! Two days ago I opened a thread in this forum, asking people about 2 other books about the Eastern front and someone recommended me Guy Sajer's "Forgotten Soldier " http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=019707 What he did not know is that I read it long ago when I was a teenager in France Guy Sajer's book is maybe not the last word in scholarship,.but if there are some books that I will remember all my life this one is among them...I remember that I read it almost without being able to stop.In school , I was only thinking at the moment I'll we be back home to go on my reading and when I went back home I left the supper on the table and ran to my room to go on reading .It was a long time ago...This evening I ordered it and I am very impatient to discover it again( together with 2 other books about the Eastern front) Do yourself a favor...get it Crockett [ 06-20-2001: Message edited by: Crockett ]

  8. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by John Kettler: Crockett, I remember with fondness from my junior high days the two East Front books by Paul Carell (later found to be the nom de plume for Paul Carl Schmidt, a Nazi press official). The books were HITLER MOVES EAST and SCORCHED EARTH... Another favorite of mine is THE FORGOTTEN SOLDIER, by Guy Sajer. Sajer was an Alsatian (French national) drafted into the Wehrmacht, who ultimately wound up in the elite Grossdeutschland Division. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Thanks John, Damn, that's a lot of good books (I begin to believe in a possible BTS and Amazon conspiracy ) By the way I saw in Amazon an other Paul Carell's book : Invasion! They're Coming!( The German Account of the D-Day Landings and the 80 Days'Battle for France ) About Guy Sajer THE FORGOTTEN SOLDIER which maybe is not the last word in scholarship,I read it in French when I was living in Paris as teenager ( which means long ago! ).If there are some books that I will remember all my life this one is among them...I remember that I read it almost without being able to stop. When I went back home from school I left the supper on the table and ran to my room to go on reading this book.I certainly will buy it again Crockett [ 06-19-2001: Message edited by: Crockett ]
  9. It looks great and very realistic at first sight. These last days I replaced my very long time prefered DD's high resolution grass with the OldDog hr grass. I still prefer the more pastel colors of DD's grass but the OldDog shows more easely the different elevations of the terrain and that may be only a minor contribution to the ease of playing but still a contribution. Both pics look great but I know from my experience that only while playing I may be able to see if the mod gives the feeling of the different terrain elevations. I hope that your mod will be what I think that a realistic grass/terrain mod should have:realistic colors and the ability to give easely the sensation of different elevations .
  10. There you will find the OldDogs Subdued grass http://www.afv-uk.net/cmoutpost/Terrain/Misc/misc_terrain.htm Try also the Richad Tremblett Subdued grass at the CMHQ http://www.combatmission.com/mods/grass.asp
  11. Thanks for your recommendations Glantz and Werth are on their way .Guderian will be next Cheers Crockett
  12. One of the reason that I so much enjoyed CM is that I had a good knowledge of the Western front history and since I was born in France and lived there for long years I traveled a lot and visited many times many of the places I meet in CM battles -- from Normandy to Marseille and from Bretagne to Belgium . I am sure that some knowledge of the Eastern front history will be part of my pleasure when playing CM2. Today my knowledge on this front is close to ...zero Too bad that have not the time to visit Eastern Europe but I have time to read. Among all the recommended books about the Eastern front ,two of them have attracted my attention: David M. Glantz's "When Titans Clashed" ( 384 pages ) Erickson's "Road To Stalingrad" and "Road To Berlin" ( 1400 both books ) I need your help to make my choice before ordering... All these books received excellent reviews and both authors are covering the same period. Is the Glantz's "When Titans Clashed" with 384 pages missing something really important that Erickson's 2 books with 1400 pages are covering ? What is your opinion about these books( or maybe other recommendations )? Crockett
  13. Cool link for stuff on the Tiger Tank Battalions Lot of information and some pics ( not so eye candy as the pics in the previous links but still OK ) One of the pics is a Tiger I, late production, sPzAbt.505, as it appeared in Russia,in February 1944.( good for a CM2 Mod!) http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/tigers.htm Lot of information here too : http://www.panzerdiesel.com/eng/e200.php [ 06-15-2001: Message edited by: Crockett ]

  15. I know, this post should be in the scenario talk. But may be not ...I do not talk about a scenario but about an operation Now seriously since there are more visitors here and I want to begin a new BPEM game today,I gave myself the liberty to post this one here and have a chance for a rapid answer: My opponent and me would like to play an operation as a PBEM I have played Any Port and my opponent is going to play the second Patrick Ware operation No Rest for the Wary with an other opponent . So we are looking for a balanced operation for PBEM but with one important condition : because of my computer limitations I cannot play large battles involving a large number of units on large maps ( I gave a try to Task Force Rose operation and also to August Bank Holiday and I had in both really HUGE loading time...).I myself prefer operations with 5 or 6 battles with up to 30 turns per battles Operation Arnhem-The Red Devils ( from the CD ) looks OK for my PC , but is it a good choice for a PBEM game ?? Maybe Operation Carentan is a good choice for PBEM ?(by the way what the difference between Carentan and Carentan v2 ? ) Any recommendations? Please if your recommendation is an operation which is not on the CD, be kind to give the link from where to download . Thanks

Yesterday evening I played the same scenario with both games( A second job Vossnack designed by Wild Bill for both games ).It was a different experience but both had something in common :both are high quality tactical games. This is a simulation: an approximation of reality, which is to say something like the reality but not in fact reality. [ 05-26-2001: Message edited by: kmead ]<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I totally agree with you CM simulates battles better than any other game I have played but it is ( and will always be ) a pale approximation of the real thing .The search was total realism is a lost battle. In spite that I admit that what I see in CM looks like what people think that the real thing is ( like the general feeling of being there, movement of the troops and vehicles ) it is very far from being realistic.Only reality is realistic . Saying that CM looks more realistic than any other tactical war is maybe true but it is like saying that a person standing on the roof of a building is closer to the sun than someone standing in the first floor...It is so far I think that the overall feeling of realism of a game ( or what gamers think is real ) apart the visual things is the ability of the AI and TacAI to model real life reactions and behaviors. I do not know a lot about tanks and tank's crew behaviors but I have a very long personal experience with infantry's behaviors .Here are some comments ( that I posted in this forum or discussed with some of my PBEM opponents ) In a PBEM I was attacking and a jeep that I sent for a recon ahead from my troops has been hit relatively far away from the main forces and the crew members killed. Now , before the crew members were killed they "saw " the enemy troops and tanks. But they are not the only one who had a look at the enemy forces...me too ,the commander( I mean , me , Crockett the CM player ) .Now , I also knew where the enemy troops were , what kind of troops and how many troops there were. This is OK for me as a gamer but totally unrealistic .In real life , the real commander who has no contact with the distant and dead Jeep crew members cannot see all that !! .These dead members cannot report what they have seen to him , but CM gives me no alternative but to see what the dead crew saw !!! This is a game's weakness that gives me an unrealistic advantage There is some very important basic things that CM does not model in soldiers attitude and reactions : the impossibility to use weapons abandoned by your wounded or killed squad or platoon members .This so basic and done in almost every combat situation. When I was a soldier every soldier in my squad knew to mount , dismount and of course fire an MMG or an HMG. In CM when the MMG crew is killed the weapon itself....magically disappears...which is totally unrealistic. In real combat these weapons are so precious that one second after someone drop them they are picked up like jewels. I was not a mortar crew member but I knew to fire a mortar( of course not like a veteran mortar crew ).In CM when a mortar crew is dead, no one else can use this mortar even other mortar crew that have lost their mortars...this is so unrealistic!! In my squad at least on other soldier in the squad was able to use my Anti Tank weapon (a Russian RPG) if something should happened to me. The distance from which you can approach an enemy unit without being discovered is very unrealistic . In CM it looks like my enemy has some Bionic eyes.In real life you can sneak meters from the enemy and spot without being seen ( as ropey wrote in real life you can get within spitting distance of enemy troops ).In CM when you see you are seen ( not always but most of the time ) One last example: In a game an enemy Panzer found himself surrounded by at least 2 full companies of Canadians..Like that just in the middle...It was very impressive to see all the yellow lines of more that 2 companies converging together to the Panzer who was totally covered by yellow color...My Piats were dead or far away ...Nothing happened to the Panzer who was in the middle for 3 turns...He turned around , fired here and there ,moved forward a bit , reverse a bit , turned his turret..After 4 turns he began to reverse and succeded to run away peacefully I do not think that it could happened in a real situation ...in the middle of more than 2 companies ( almost 200 enemies soldier )?? More than one soldier may have climb the beast and throw grenades inside...even the tracks were not damaged !! Dam ! Long post... In spite of all that I still think CM is one of the best gaming experience I had. Who knows maybe some of the shortcomings that I mentioned here will not be present in CM2 or maybe this thread will be a first wish list for CM3 Crockett [ 05-26-2001: Message edited by: Crockett ]
  20. Welcome Clinton DD's Terrain will make the most important improvement in the graphic of the game. Once the grass look like real grass give your troops the DD's Uniform mods I think you will find them at : http://www.combatmission.com/ ( look for terrains and uniforms ) Change the graphic of the buildings completely with the Magua's mods .You will find them at : http://users.pandora.be/aneric/index8.htm#Mods Just click on building pictures on the bottom of the page to download them. A must too : Deanco: Interface mods, gunmetal and the clipboard ...a revolution in your interface : http://mapage.cybercable.fr/deanco/ Marco Bergman's Stuarts and Shermans are a must too Kitty's King Tiger You have plenty of links. Just search download and try...it's part of the game Crockett
  21. Yep ,it was fun... Near the end I was afraid to be killed before knocking out some Brits . Sorry Bafindo I had no choice Crockett
  22. I am at the first turn of Ham and Jam in PBEM game .I play the British... In the briefing it is said that my mission to take and hold the 2 bridges.I indeed see a victory flag on each bridge. I see also a third victory flag in the left side (South )of the town between the buildings. What do to with that flag .I did not understand from the briefing that I have to enter the town but only deal with the bridges. Can anyone who played this scenario enlighten me ? Thanks Crockett
  23. Hey Stormhouse Welcome ! The Demo is still installed in my hard drive and since I have played Valley of Trouble only against the AI ,I invite you to play it with me as a PBEM .Pick any side. A PBEM is an experience you will never forget It takes CM to a new level. I am not looking to some newbie for an easy victory,I am myself a 6 months newbie in CM and lose many of my PBEM games. If it is OK e-mail me. Cheers

  25. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Olle Petersson: That is exactly what I was thinking about ! I think my idea was a good one but the actual scenario builder engine does not give the possibility to do build such a scenario ( one side being the attacker in a part of the map and the defender in an other part ) I tried to make the scenario a meting engagement with not more success and making the German more aggressive an in greater number will make this scenario too much unbalanced in favor of the German side in a PBEM game I also placed different flags in different places ( all kind of combinations )...other problems came out then. I think it OK to stick trying to achieve something but it's time to stop when it obviously does not work the way I want. I am already working on the same scenario and gave it a new twist Thanks for all the advices Crockett
