  1. Qanats used in conjunction with a wind tower can provide cooling as well as a water supply. A wind tower is a chimney-like structure positioned above the house to catch the prevailing wind. The tower catches the wind, driving a hot, dry breeze into the house; the flow of the incoming air is then directed across the vertical shaft from the qanat. The air flow across the vertical shaft opening creates a lower pressure (see Bernoulli effect) and draws cool air up from the qanat tunnel, mixing with it. The air from the qanat was drawn into the tunnel at some distance away and is cooled both by contact with the cool tunnel walls/water and by the giving up latent heat of evaporation as water evaporates into the air stream. In dry desert climates this can result in a greater than 15°C reduction in the air temperature coming from the qanat; the mixed air still feels dry, so the basement is cool and only comfortably moist (not damp). Wind tower and qanat cooling have been used in desert climates for over 1000 years.[7] From the Wiki article. I had not realised that the Spaniards had taken the idea to South America so the concept exists under one name or another from China westwards to South America. It is sad to see such ancient cunning falling into disrepair in Afghanistan
  2. Qanat I almost felt like putting the answer before looking at the picture. : )

  5. Scenarios - phooey : ) In the vast majority of cases I have played I have felt like there are three players involved. The designer with his views on balance and what should happen , and two others. Often I think the one who has played the least number of competitive games is the designer and it shows up in his scenario. In some scenarios it is so prescriptive that you are under fire from the first second because the designer wants to recreate the battle as it happened. So anything that says it is historical I regard as one to be avoided. Fortunately there are some good designs which are fun and the Scenario Depot is a handy place to go. However bear in mind the scoring system is a little broken - apparently by design so that the weighting is to the extreme scores. One of our WeBoB designers has just had a 1 out of 10 score on one of his scenarios because the downloader could not open it after he stupidly put it into the wrong directory. That kind of thing, because it is not remedied, does really make the scoring highly dubious. We need unbalanced scenarios and NABLA : )
  6. Stunting the growth of generics competitors in countries like India is worth doing : ) Having said that it is still a very bold and laudable move from someone stuck defending the indefensible current position. See it spreading to other areas ...?
  7. My opinion of general Australian intelligence has changed - a little. BTW this is impressive cloud formation a Haboob though it does not seem to have the dust etc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haboob
  8. I would think a membership of 200 is reasonable for WeBoB. Given that there is a quarterly weeding out process if you have not registered a played game, or are engaged in playing a game, the membership number is reasonably accurate. It is however not a ladder focussed club which does mean that the vast majority are relaxed about playing odd-ball tournaments. After all picking a force that is probably going to be allocated to another player is amusing .... and does mean you can end up with stuff you would not normally use. But its fun to make the best of what you have. There is serious stuff aswell and one day I hope the club will get to organising RoW style events with NABLA scoring. I have argued that all the clubs work badly in that they make the BF CM forums very bare which leads potential new players to look at other games with active forums. Having said that I am playing a couple of new to CM currently. It is saddening though that potential new players can get very poor responses at the BF Seeking Players thread. There is also imminent danger in that Les Grognards is likely to appeal to a considerable number of CM players, myself included, as the battlefields and command span are considerably bigger.
  9. Leave aircraft as available for purchase. It will stop gamey German players from not buying AA guns but paying for a Panther instead - do not make it tooo easy. It also means that they will not be encouraged to spread their tanks out a little more just in case a plane turns up. If you have a regular opponent buying them every now and then will help him play honestly : ) It is true that they can be unreliable and if the German has bought adequate AA they can be ineffective. However banning Soviet aircraft is only to the advantage of the German player.
  10. It has been an interesting fun tale and well illustrated. It is because of this that one can look at the terrain and discuss the game. If you asked me who should win this battle from the outset I would have send the Germans. In fact I would have given odds on it. I appreciate what Tux has done by laying this out. This is particularly so given we have a common map to look at. I have maintained for some time now that the effects of terrain are very under-rated in there effects on battles and this is an excellent example of map bias. The route to the main flag is very direct. It is also 3 squares closer to the German baseline and if measured on road distance closer still. The 300 point flag is also on the back slope facing potential German guns in position from game start. Ditto one of the 100 pointers. If I were Russian I am not sure I would have been very happy at all as I reckon the placing of the flags in relation to the hill is a force multiplier of 20% at least. As I am not a ladder player and I would rather play a good battle and lose rather than win a bad battle I do not get overly excited when I play if a map is biased - it just means you have to think harder on how to play. I do mind people when people attribute all their wins to their tactical genius without giving proper respect to the map and Lady Luck. That is a general point and not aimed at Tux at all If I had had to play that game my feeling is I would have lain doggo for 35 turns on my side of the hill and then dropped smoke to go for the flags. Very exciting - not - but the only way I think it drawable : )
  11. SMART ARSE ANSWERS 2008 6th Place It was mealtime during a flight on a British Airways plane: 'Would you like dinner?' the flight attendant asked the man seated in the front row. 'What are my choices?' the man asked. 'Yes or no,' she replied. 5th Place A flight attendant was stationed at the departure gate to check tickets. As a man approached, she extended her hand for the ticket and he opened his trench coat and flashed her. Without blinking an eyelid she said, 'Sir, I need to see your ticket - not your stub.' 4th Place A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at a branch of Sainsbury's but she couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a passing assistant, 'Do these turkeys get any bigger?' The assistant replied, 'I'm afraid not, they're dead.' 3rd Place The policeman got out of his car and approached the boy racer he stopped for speeding. 'I've been waiting for you all day,' the bobby said. The kid replied, 'Yes, well I got here as fast as I could.' When the policeman finally stopped laughing, he sent the kid on his way without a ticket. 2nd Place A lorry driver was driving along on a country road. A sign came up that read ' Low Bridge Ahead.' Before he realised it, the bridge was directly ahead and he got stuck under it. Cars are backed up for miles. Finally, a police car comes up. The policeman got out of his car and walked to the lorry's cab And said to the driver, 'Got stuck, eh?' The lorry driver said, 'No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of petrol!' SMART ARSE ANSWER OF THE YEAR 2008 A teacher at a polytechnic college reminded her pupils of tomorrow's final exam. 'Now listen to me, I won't tolerate any excuses for you not being here tomorrow. I might consider a nuclear attack or a serious personal injury, illness, or a death in your immediate family, but that's it, no other excuses whatsoever!' A smart-arsed guy at the back of the room raised his hand and asked, 'What would happen if I came in tomorrow suffering from complete and utter sexual exhaustion?' The entire class was reduced to laughter and sniggering. When silence was restored, the teacher smiled knowingly at the student, shook her head and sweetly said, 'Well, I suppose you'd have to write with your other hand'.

  18. This is interesting from the Windows Secrets news letter. Basically you install some software to watch a live streaming event and compromise your computer, and possibly blow your limit if you have a tariff limit on your broadband. I recommend you sign up for the free newsletter http://windowssecrets.com/comp/090205/ For those who want a bit more to see if it is important: The article is quite long but worth reading as not only effects CNN but has been used in Europe already. The compromise system comes from the fact that the software is not CNN specific but a visit to any site with streaming vid could activate it. And how long do you think the bad guys are going to ignore a P2P network?
