  1. Montana. Where the odds are good, but the goods are odd. Fat
  2. I just finished the book Stalingrad by Anthony Beevor. This movie seems to be about Zaitsev at Stalingrad. In the book it talks about a rivalry between Zaitsev and a German sniper ace, but it says that the accounts of a 1 vs 1 are largely false. Certainly there was a "cult of sniperism" that developed at Stalingrad, especially for the Russians. Excellent read, btw.
  3. I agree. The DVD is simply amazing, especially the beach landing. I watch it on my computer though, which doesn't have the greatest sound system. Now if we can only get Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
  4. I played a TCP/IP game last night and my opponent certainly appreciated the extra time (30 turns). By about turn 15 I decimated all of his tanks and halftracks and he was left with a few squads running around the map. I chased those squads down, but not before he took out 3 of my 4 remaing tanks. The game was seemingly over, but those extra turns cost me a major victory.

  6. Ok, since we might as well hold our breath on any REASONABLE way to find other people to play tcp/ip games, I have come up with an alternative. I have changed my icon in Gameranger to the CM icon. I have already found people who contacted ME for tcp games simply from this change (I did it quite on the spur of the moment and didn't have any cool icons for GR). My idea is that everyone who is looking for a game of CM should change their icon to the CM icon in GR. Then when you log on, you can instantly identify other CM players. Instant games, no waiting for the web board or emails...just go and play. Anyways, the current method of finding players STINKS.
  7. From www.gameranger.com Contact Scott Kevill at developer@GameRanger.com to find out just how easy it is to have GameRanger support your game. Please include any information about the game that you can (confidentiality is assured), and in particular, the type of networking models it uses, and a very rough estimate of how far away the release is (if not already released). Support is added to the game by the developer, and then the GameRanger plug-in is written by Scott Kevill, as the GameRanger server has a registry of all plug-ins.
  8. The only problem is that you would have to put up with all the Gameranger idiots. Spend some time on the Gameranger chat and feel your IQ drop exponentially. I would actually prefer a standalone or in-game *platform independent* combat mission game browser/people finder. Or maybe we could get our own lobby on gameranger. Since I don't have any friends, a CM game finder would be nice
  9. Ripped from www.xlr8yourmac.com: Copy-Back (default) vs Write-Through Cache Modes: </P> I'm not sure about the Apple G4 systems, but the previous G3 systems used 'Write-Through' cache modes vs. the faster 'Copy-Back' mode supported by some cache types. 'Copy-back' cache mode is faster as writes are written to the backside cache (and later copied back to RAM if data has been changed). Write-through mode means that each CPU write is written directly to much slower main system RAM. In my tests last year with a utility that would toggle these modes on a B&W G3s, I saw little real world gain from Copy-Back mode. Perhaps with the 100MHz memory bus speeds it's less of a performance issue than with older Macs with much slower memory bus speeds. However, I found that it makes a huge difference in CM: Minutes off compute time on large maps.
  10. Download the powerlogix g3/g4 cache profiler from www.powerlogix.com. Install it and turn OFF write-thru. My machine (g4/400) was way faster with combat mission. It made a world of difference. Calculation times dropped. It seemed *almost* as fast as my athlon 700 in CM.
  11. Actually, my g3/500 is faster than my g4/400, so probably no altivec enhancements are in CM.
  12. What about Quesa. Contrary to popular belief, quickdraw 3d runs on just about any platform, including windows 2000/9x. See http://www.quesa.org. The truth of the matter is that Quickdraw 3d has a lot higher level routines than does OpenGL. OpenGL is more comparable to apple's low level Rave driver than it is to QD3d. Anyways, the point of this post is that if BTS wanted to stay with qd3d on osx (or even unix), they could through the Quesa libraries, a free implementation (hack or reverse engineer) of qd3d api.
  13. I did a search, but didn't find anything about this. If you have air support, does smoke have any effect on aircraft targeting, ie if I fire smoke at an enemy tank, will my planes use this as a sight, or will it simply hide the tank and make it more difficult to hit? Thanks in advance
