  1. another thing, how is it possible my squad can not identify enemy bunker from 50 meters? i went running in it with whole squad and saw too late what they were up to :D as i was busy with other part of the front

Was your squad hunting, walking, running, or sitting tight looking around? Give a squad some time to look around and you can usually spot items realistically. Walk or god forbid run you will hit an ambush and get slaughtered. Go for a walk in the woods and you will quickly see that it is very hard to spot items 50 meters away if they are hidden.

  2. but don't tell me you have not done something similar.

You set up an attack on an enemy strong point. You have a squad laying down covering fire while you carefully send a second squad around the flank to take it out. Everything is working as planned as the enemy is all laying prone like a bunch of sleeping babies. All of a sudden something flies towards your flanking squad (random ricochet), their icon flashes, and they pause for a second before continuing on their mission. You heart stops for a moment fearing that the attack will fail without that man. Then you look carefully at the screen and breath a sigh of relief and urge the rest on when you realize the man down is just carries an ordinary rifle.....

With that said, I think BF could monetize their investment better with more official battles and campaigns. I think they could also reach a little further in to the mainstream and extract more money out of their core audience with their existing engine and some investment in a real campaign framework. How many close combat games have been released on an engine that is perhaps halfway between CM1 and CM2?

It hasn't been something we've done so far because until recently it's been frowned upon because there was a time when wargame makers abused this model. It's why we have always had a full featured editor and "quick battle" features in every single CM game we've made. Pay once, play as long as the game holds your interest.

What's changed now is that providing small amounts of content is economically feasible thanks to digital downloads. As a result people have gotten used to Downloadable Content (DLC). As long as we don't hobble/abandon our current approach of including playable content, a full featured editor, and "quick battle" features in our products, I don't see why anybody could complain if we also offer pay-for-play playable content as an additional option. Meaning, it doesn't remove any options people have had for 14 years, rather it adds to it.

From the above it sounds like BF will be offering new scenarios/campaigns as either DLC or as part of the CMBN/CMFI packs. There have been other clues: Paper Tiger recently hinting that he's working on a new campaign and the Monte Casino map project mentioned by ChrisND also seem indicate that new scenarios and campaigns will be offered for sale.

Hey - That was my quote and I never saw Steve's reply. Thank you for posting this.

  4. WEGO.

I had a situation where there was a PAK tucked down an alley for a keyhole position. I had a MG that did not have LOS on the PAK so I aimed it at the PAK but with a house in the way. The HMG shot throw a window and hammered at the wall beside the PAK for a while and after a minute or so broke threw and then spreayed the PAK disabling it. Looking at if from the PAKs view you see the wall getting beat up but holdng before the rounds start to go through and hit the crew. It was really amazing theater that you would never see in RT.

  5. CMBN and CMFI did not get eastern-Europe-style tank riding. Its not tactically applicable to these theaters and would have involved perhaps 400 individual vehicles (between the two title) being individually hand-worked to accept passengers. A herculean task for something that never occurred in combat.

Umm, excuse me. Have you not seen Kelly's heros? There is no way to recreate this campaign without tank riders!!!!!

With that said, I would take flame weapons as a compromise.

  6. I understand (I think). You're saying you want ONE price shown for the current/latest version of the game. Easy: $65.

Now, some say they are short of cash and can't afford the $10 for the upgrade. Cool. They have a great game for $55. See? More price points!

The upgrade JUST came out. Of course there'll be a bit of a period when it will be an add-on. Look at the v2 history. It came as an upgrade to v1. Now, you get v2 as the base. Guess what'll happen in the future?

    Ken

Edited due to crosspost. If you REALLY thing add-on content should be free to you, then you're living in a dystopian dream world. Really. There are MANY posts/threads about the reasons for upgrades to cost money while patches are free. Check bobo's "whining" thread. It's unfraying somewhere around here...

Ken - You could be the last person I would want to disagree with, but I think $100 is probably closer to the right price for one of these games with perpetual upgrades.

  7. I agree that we, Battlefront, are capable of making a more mainstream wargame type product. If you like, the Panzer General of the 21st Century. We'd actually really like to do that because it would give us a creative break from having to be so fussy with the details. Levels of detail and realism tend to be indicators of how many people might want to buy it. Here's the problem, though...

If we break from core audience and shoot wider, but miss, then we're likely done for. We are doing just fine with our current audience, not fine enough to be able to afford 2 years of development down the tubes.

So it's a good thing in theory, just not as easy to do as any of us would like.

First, I disagree with the premise of this thread. BF's CM series games are somewhere between fairly priced and outrageously cheap depending on where you fit in the grog scale.

  8. Near that IS3 or T34 is the absolute last place I would want to be if it got in to a real fight with the Ukrainians. Give me a pickup truck with some speed and a few soldiers with PTRDs and AKs any day over that lumbering deathtrap. Next thing you know an IL2 is going to be flying over Odessa.

With that said, we are now seeing some great ideas for partisan tank rider uniform mods.

  9. I am having similar problems. I even have a mortar squad 15M from its Platoon HQ with both sounds and visual contact and the platoon HQ says it is out of contact with the mortar squad. Is there a CC/mortars 101 for dummys available anywhere?

  10. AI isn't good at attacking. Go up the right flank to the treeline and you can get keyhole positions on the soviet left flank. Trees on the left also offer decent cover. Use tanks in the centre to get a few shots off then withdraw and redeploy.

That was my plan and achieved a minor tactical victory that felt like kissing my dog (I have no sisters). I was honestly surprised at how the Ruskies easily killed my keyholes. Adolph would not have been happy with my tactical victory.

  11. Siege warfare definitely wasn't Patton's forte. In a perfect world Montgomery would have been in charge at Metz and Patton would have been better suited to leading Market Garden than Montgomery.

Sometimes Patton like Montomery bit off more than they could chew. The Hammelburg raid wasn't one of his shining moments.

I would venture to guess if a US commander tried that sort of operation today the media throw a huge fit and Washington would come down hard.

That would depend on whom was the president.
