  1. I tried doing a search for this topic, so if this has already been covered, I'm sorry to have brought it up.

It seems to me that the AI doesn't play by the same rules regarding the minimum range a mortar can fire at a vehicle. Today I had a Brit 2" mortar fire at me from 13m away.

I have noticed this problem in all of the versions of the game I have played (1.03 through 1.1b24) -- it seems like the rules get bent only for the AI, as I have never noticed this playing PBEM or TCP/IP. The AI seems to be able to ignore the minimum range, while I am forced to abide by the rules.

If this is in fact the case for the AI, are there any other rules that the AI gets to bend?

  2. For me, some of the best games were in Microprose's heyday. They could do no wrong (unlike now -- they've totally changed, starting around 1992 or so):

    Silent Service

    Pirates!

Sword of the Sumurai (I hope I have that title right -- It's a game that is rarely remebered, but a wonderful, versatile game that concentrated on a subject rarely explored in PC games)

M1 Tank Platoon -- Probably my most-played mil sim. It had everything -- battalion-level control, great graphics for the time, great gameplay, and it was very versatile, covering a whole range of Soviet post-war equipment. I played this for years. To me, M1 was the king of ground combat sims, and it was hard for me to ever return to air combat.

    Railroad Tycoon

    Civilization

Thus, in a few short years, Microprose had cranked out several great games. At some point after 1992, they either got lazy, too preoccupied with graphics, or both, and games suffered. Thank goodness Battlefront is here to re-establish the tradition of hand-crafting solid, dependable games.

  3. AOL AIM, Outlook reminders, ICQ, ect. can steal away the focus of the PC back to the desktop. Your best bet is to make sure you don't have any other programs running while playing CMBO. I know this can be frustrating -- I don't have the garbled screen problem at work, but at home, if I'm in the game screen and I hit escape, the colors and display are completely screwed up. I think, as you said, it's a function of how the video card reacts with it, and nothing can be done about it, except to take action to make sure that nothing else is running.

  4. I've noticed that in all of my PBEM games, my Tigers seem to severely underperform, while the Panthers shine in combat. For instance, my Tigers will regularly chicken out of a head on duel with a Churchill or Comet, and never seem to hit anything with any consisten degree of accuracy. Panthers, on the other hand, seem to do very well. Has anyone else had this experience?

If so, is there any point to using a Tiger over a Panther? Perhaps I am using the Tiger in the wrong capacity. I don't know a terrible lot about WWII equipment, and I have noticed that the Tiger falls after the Panther in classification (Mark VI vs. Mark V) -- there must have been some reason it was made. Grognards? Otherwise, I don't really see why I should ever use a Tiger again.

  5. Out of curiousity, I checked on the "Thunderstorm" thread, where he allegedly was treated harshly, and was surprised that he was so offended. Compared to threads in the past (or any threads for that matter), the comments directed at Rob were light-hearted, silly, and bore no ill will. The only name-calling or harsh tone came from him, as when he asked if we "little people" could answer a simple question.

I don't think we need anymore people on the "Chat is getting worse and worse, and everybody is rude" bandwagon. This chat board is no different than any other hobby newsgroup-type forum -- there will be flames, trolls, nasty words said, but also good advice, good fun, and friendships made.

  6. I've been using the German 75mm Inf Gun on the defense, and it kicks ass, pardon my French. It seems to stop infantry rushes in their tracks, steals morale, and even takes out light vehicles.

One question for the group? Have you guys had any luck using it on the offense? I guess you could tow it into position, but won't it take heavy fire while you're setting up (plus it takes two minutes to unlimber)? I was just wondering if anyone had used it in the offensive capacity.

  7. A lot of the gruff responses Capt. Stransky recieved were triggered by his completely incomprehensible structuring of his ideas. Though he didn't seem to place any importance in this, as someone with a BA in English, I can tell you that good writing is the foundation of good communication. His reluctance to at least apply some sort of structure to his ideas indicates either that he is lazy and not truly serious about getting his point across (and thinks very little of all of us), or is not entirely stable, as his run-on, stream-of-consciousness writing had a madman quality to it.

Either way, his behavior made it very hard for any of us to take anything he said seriously.

He came off to many of us as a troll, as he was mainly rehashing ideas that had already been brought up on previous threads. If he really was as meticulous in his research as he claimed to be, he would have already looked at those threads before posting his rambling, incoherent manifesto online.

  8. Does anybody actually use the ladders? I'm listed on two different ladders, have challenged multiple people to a match, and have only recieved one response (and he could only run 1.01). No one has ever challenged me -- it often seems like no one actually uses the ladders to challenge anyone, except for the top 30 people, who are probably out of my league at this point.

Also, I've noticed that at least one of the ladders doesn't seem like it's been updated recently, and that the scores seem awry.

The other ladder has a "Search for Opponent" feature, which seems very helpful, but it doesn't seem to actually work. Also, it doesn't appear to have been updated in a while (it still lists 1.03 as the newest patch).

I'm sorry to grouse about this, but has anyone else ran into these problems? I don't want to have to post on the board every time I want a new PBEM opponent, and I'm used to a process much easier than this for finding multiplayer opponents.

    Let the flames begin. frown.gif

  9. Preface: Please do not see this as me questioning the accuracy of the game. I'm sure BTS did its research, and a very thorough job as well. I'm just asking this to satisfy my own personal curiosity and ignorance. smile.gif

I was wondering -- what's the difference between the HMG 42 and the LMG 42? In the game, the only difference I can discern is that the LMG has only 2 guys, while the HMG has a crew of 6 (and thus more ammo). However, looking at the damage charts in the unit database, the HMG does significantly more damage, even though (on the surface) it appears to be the same gun.

I was doing a little reading this weekend, and they only listed the MG 42, and the FG 42 (the light, mountain troop light machine gun). The books I read said that the FG was a fairly rare weapon, so it doesn't seem likely that this is the LMG 42. Could a grognard straighten me out on this, or delve further into the subject?

  10. Judging by some of the comments above, I think that possibly the remedy might be to make the jeeps worth more as far as morale is concerned. That way, the "recon by being fired at" technique is still viable, as some here feel it should be, but the risk to your morale offsets the expendability of the units (how many soldiers would like seeing their buddies sent off regularly on complete suicide missions?).

  11. Risking the ire of those who may find this a ridiculous topic, or whining... eek.gif

Recently, while playing CM with a co-worker, I was subjected to a strategy that I'm not sure about -- is it gamey, or realistic?

Because MG Jeeps are so cheap on the American side, he bought 5 of them, and raced them ahead of his troops in the first turn. By the second round, they had either been knocked out, or had run directly into my troops, revealing their positions. Though I had also thought of using this tactic, I had not thought of doing it on this scale, and the nuisance it causes in both subjecting units to immediate attack and the loss of the element of surprise is unsurpassed. Many of my important troop positions were revealed before I could do anything, and the loss of the jeeps did not seem to affect his troops morale in any appreciable way. This bothers me, because it reminds me of other "rushes" from games such as AOE, AOK, etc.

Maybe I'm just being a baby about it. This could be Blitzkrieg (albeit Kamikaze Blitzkrieg), and I'm just the recipient of an excellent scouting/diversionary tactic. If so, how would you defend against this tactic, and do you feel that the loss of a jeep should count more against enemy morale (especially 5 jeeps)?

    Awaiting your advice/response/scolding:0
