  1. I agree -- the only thing that went against them was the 2nd pilot's impulsiveness, as some article I read said they should have waited for one more confirmation (they had another arty strike in to mark the target). Regardless, it is a shame that the family of the UK soldier killed was jerked around a bit by the powers that be.

Still, they had checked so throughly, and were cleared, so it is sad that something like this should happen to what seems like a fairly responsible decision maker.

  2. If you like that kind of real footage, I heartily recommend liveleak.com (formerly ogrish.com). The footage there tends to be extreme, and sometimes you get the insurgent beheading/IED vids, but it really shows you reality uncensored.

Whether that is in good taste is another question, of course, but you can choose what you personally want to watch, and vote with your viewership. The US combat vids crop up there often, with very good footage (with audio) of them calling in air strikes, arty, support, etc.

I would hope that all of us here who are so enthusiastic about simulation of war would go look at the real thing to remind ourselves how terrible and what a waste of human life it usually is. It brings some solemnity to the game.

  3. Seriously -- It sounds like even the hard-core members are starting to lose interest. The sad fact is that we all have limited time and interest, and that every year a new product comes to appeal to that interest.

Right now, I mentally have put away time for TOW, CMSF, and probably some wild card games out there, or discounted games from now (though I can't think of any). I also go back to the classics, but at some point, you need a change of pace, things can't stay the same forever (much as some here would like them to).

This game would have been great during any of the days off I had in the past 6 months, but that opportunity is lost. I won't be buying this product unless it is heavily discounted (think 20 bucks tops at this point) because it missed the window.

I'm sensing a lot of almost reactionary feelings about gameplay and battle simulation. Why, after loving what Battlefront has created, second-guess CMSF or the quality of fun a particular scenario might deliver? They say they're going to deliver a balanced game -- look to the present and future, change up the pace a bit.

  4. I love how everyone picks their little niche of WWII and assumes it will be the perfect game for everyone. Haven't we gotten enough of WWII already with CM? Haven't we done those tank battles to death? Let's see what's different in modern warfare, instead of rehashing the same troops and equipment time after time. You have CMBB and CMAK for that (and CMBO for the die-hards). Let the rest of us have our change of pace. Also, let CMSF be where the bugs are ironed out in the new engine, so that by the time they make their way back to WWII, they can add in new features and deliver a perfect WWII game (again).

  5. Honestly, what's the point in releasing this when CMSF will be out, and we'll all be learning the new engine? This game would have been great 6 months ago. Having it come out when TOW and CMSF already will have blown our minds is just a waste. They should save their effort for the CMx2 WWII game, or make one for the CMSF engine and at least have something that isn't based on a 5 year-old engine.

I'm thinking it will never come out. Sad to those who wasted their time beta testing it, but this is why projects have due dates -- at some point, the project becomes stale and misses its moment if things aren't timely.

  6. I would like to see a more precise cost breakdown of a typical fighter mission.

    I'm thinking:

Pilot -- maybe a million in training and several mission in support/training equipment, divided over the # of missions he will fly

    Fuel cost

    Parts

    ...and the big one...

    LABOR

The support crew all have to be cared for, fed, trained, ect. They do a lot more work than people give them credit for.

So in the end, on a per-hour basis, 1 million for an almost sure thing might not be so bad, at least until they can find a hand-held, easily portable way to do it cheaper. It's meeting a support need, can others match it?

And is it in the game?

  7. Gotcha -- I'm just saying, the choice is to go to college and spend your free time around girls your age, partying, or to maybe get to play with some cool weapons, but spend your free time around bored guys your age and some older guys who yell at you all the time and make you clean your gear.

    The choice is yours.

No one knows what they want to do in college, and what I do now is very different than what I got a degree for.

  8. Ferricus,

I think your expectations are a little unrealistic, especially about the chance that you would be stationed at that base near your home. The below is based on a (maybe wrong) assumption that you are in your late teens or early 20s, and not a college student:

Judging by the comments others have left, and just from info from relatives, and stuff I have read in the news, I think the guy who said you should join a gun club or something like that is on the mark. In the military you're risking spending some of the best years of your life doing really mundane stuff for crummy pay, being stationed somewhere like the mideast where you can't even have the benefit of "loose women", and possibly getting maimed or killed from an IED planted by a guy who has half your education and about 1/10 of your net worth.

It's sad to look back at decisions we have made in our teenage or young adulthood and see how naive we were, or the perspective we lacked at the time. Unless you are really raring to be in the military, had that as a lifelong goal, and want to make a career out of it, I would say stay out.

I have total respect for those that serve, and understand that "sacrifice" is more than just a word, our veterans live that concept. They give up their freedom to keep us free, and they go in harm's way to keep us safe. If you are not 100% confident that this is what you want, don't do it. At least get a degree first, so that if you do enlist, you can serve as an officer (after passing OTC) and have had some years to mature and make up your mind. I too once wanted to join, but I know now that the reasons that prompted this are ones that I have outgrown. If they ever draft again and I got picked, I would go, but I really don't want to lose my legs or my eyesight because Bush wanted to help his friends get rich. (I don't lump Afghanistan in this category, and I was originally for the Iraq invasion, just FYI)
