  1. Good discussion thread. Points by Drussus and Steve et al, as well Mikey's important input as what constitutes/defines victory vs success puts this battle account, IMHO, as a clear tactical success, despite what the other side of the hill might claim.

As Steve pointed out, a distinction should be made between strategic success/victory and tactical success/victory in analyzing this interesting account.

    7. Securing the Mosque - this was never a part of either insurgent or US's battle intentions, so it is irrelevant. It would be like the Germans in the middle of Arnhem deciding to "keep secure" a wine cellar full of choice wine on the outskirts of town.
Depending on your battle thirst and troop morale, always worth fighting for. Damn the objective...

  2. Over the last 6+ years there was hardly a day that I did not visit this forum. My second home.

My well wishes for the continued financial success and good health to all BFC members, Charles, Steve, Dan, Martin, Fernando and Matt and not forgetting Rune.

I wish all forum members great health for the coming year.

Here's hoping/praying/wishing BFC will be with us for many years to come.

    Stay well,

  3. IMHO,

Great games are scattered thinly in the PC world, and I guess other platforms too. I’ve played quite a lot over the years. Games I’ve enjoyed, though some still have the irritating wash, rinse, repeat formula are:

    Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel

    Silent Hunter III

Links 2000 - since Access sold out to Microsoft it lost its touch

    X-Com Apocalypse

    Railroad Tycoon III

    Civ II

Silent Storm - awaiting reviews on the follow-up Hammer & Sickle

Rome: Total War – especially the historical RTR mods

F.E.A.R. – I’m not a fan of FPS, but an impressive cinematic shooter, if you have a top rig that is. Suffers a bit from repetetiveness, though saved by the really outstanding shooting physics a-la Max Payne style slo-mo, good pace as well as atmosphere: what’s-that-I-see-in-corner-of-my-eye/screen?

Also enjoyed EuroFighter 2000 (can't remember the add-on name, Total War or somefink from DID).

Bought Baldurs Gate II after reading rave reviews. Not to my liking, even though I have a passing interest in AD&D (pen/paper).

Truly great games are Combat Mission Trilogy, especially the last 2 incarnations. The Trilogy spoiled me for the better: I want no health bars/hit points on units. No more. Never.

    Sincerely,

    Charl Theron

  4. Join the Southern hemisphere, more specifically the RSA. You too Emrys!

It's 10-15 Deg. C. @ night and 25-30 Deg. C. during the day here in Stellenbosch. Plus we have no tornados, cyclones, female-named storms and earthquakes - well, none since the lonely single 1960's one in Tulbagh anyway - and no brewing Mt. Edna's. Can you spell temperate?

  5. OK, I'm back.

Happy to report that my v81.85 ForceWare drivers are working fine with CMAK/CMBB with my SLi'ed nVidia 6800 Ultras. Jack, if you have trouble with yours, I suggest, as Redwolf did, to read this page carefully regarding installing/removing drivers. Especially regarding the proper removal of older drivers.

Oh yes, I've noticed a "problem" in CMAK with the new drivers from nVidia: As soon as the gun smoke dissipates, after a tank fires his main gun, the smoke particles turn from white to a slight hue of green at the very moment just before the smoke disappear. A minor problem really.

  6. Jack,

I had ForceWare v77.77 installed and that worked fine with CMBB/CMAK.

Installed v81.85 last night for my 2 x nVidia 6800Ultra's (in SLi) and will have a look tonight to see if I have the same problem as you in CM.

It seems that you have the same 2D corruption with your v81.85 drivers that I had earlier with the version 6~ Forceware drivers. Once I installed the version 7~ drivers I had no problem. Hope the probelm does not return with the 8 series drivers :(

Will report back by tomorrow if my v81.85 work well.

  7. Yes, you're reading tea leafs at the bottom of the cup. ;) The soldier morale state of Broken/Routed is still valid for CMSF as per the previous CM trilogy, just more fleshed out.

Put enough fp on a single squad from all angles for long enough and I don't see how BFC will change the morale model suddenly (in CMSF) so that the USA troops will never rout/break. That just seems, well, plain wrong from a simulation standpoint. I venture to say BFC will not be that silly.
