  1. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Germanboy: The real problem at Omaha was that the US turned down the idea of using the 'Funnies' that helped keep casualties down on the Commonwealth beaches. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Excuse my ignorance, but what are "Funnies"? 2. That IS weird. Some questions come to mind: Did you hold all of the victory flags? Maybe the Allies had a number of objectives and achieved one or two of them? 3. It might be bad RAM, especially if you play a lot of games and some of your other games also behave strangely. I had this problem once and it drove me nuts. It might also be that your processor is over-clocked. If it is, turn down the multipler if you know how. It is also possible, although unlikely, that you were sold a processor that is really a slower speed but had the case switched so you think it's faster. However, I don't know if that works well with Athlon's, and as I said, it is unlikely this has happened to you. BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" 4. Actually, the Chance Encounter scenario is in the Final game, but not Valley of Trouble. However, you can make a copy of the Valley of Trouble file (found in your CM demo scenario directory), and then copy it into the final game scenario directory when you get it. Welcome to the world of CM! BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  5. I was (and still am) having trouble with all of these acronyms. A very helpful soul on this forum directed me to www.acronymfinder.com It's been a life-saver! For instance, I've learned that: FNG means Former Navy Guy OT means Optical Telescope AT means Absolute Terror APC means Alien Property Custodian I feel so smart now! Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that AP doesn't mean Academy of Peridontology. I tell ya, I just couldn't figure out how a bunch of these guys in a tank were so effective at taking out my Shermans! BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" 6. Yeah, I've been to Cantigny. It might even be in Warrenville, but if you got the name, it's not hard to find. You can climb on the tanks there, but you can't go inside, and they're all painted the same dark green color, probably to preserve them as they're all outside. I don't think they have any German armor though. The war museum there is pretty cool. They have a neat D-Day exhibit and a bit about Bastogne. ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" 7. Thanks GhostOne, I did end up going around the hill. I know it wasn't a good idea to pop the tank over a hill, but still, I couldn't see any enemy troops around, and the trees were far enough away that I figured any anti-tank teams would be out of range even if they were hiding in the woods. I guess the AI is smarter than I am (i.e. it still realized it wasn't a good idea)! I'll have to look into the workings of that fuzzy logic again in my AI textbook from college. It seems to work remarkably well! BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" 8. Maybe a grognard out there could organize a chronological list of the current (non-fiction) scenarios included with CM for all of us Newbies? Could be posted on CMHQ? Just a thought, BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  9. I'm playing the Valley of Trouble scenario, and I've had an engineer squad within 17 meters of the minefield for a few turns now, but the minefield sign is still on the road. There manual says that if they're within 25 meters, the mines will be automatically cleared. Is there a way to tell that the mines are gone? I've also had the squad firing at the enemy, so could this be the problem? Thanks! BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  10. Cool! Thanks guys, I learned something new today. ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  11. I've read people's comments about these 2 variants of the Sherman gun. It seems odd to me that 1 tiny millimeter would make such a big difference in the power of the gun. Can someone explain this to me? Thanks! BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  12. I'm playing Valley of Trouble as the Americans. I order one of my tanks to go over a hill in a wheat field and proceed towards some trees. Well, 2 turns in a row now, it has gone up, and immediately it goes into reverse and back down out of sight. In neither case has it received enemy fire, and the second time it did this it also shot smoke. There are no anti-tank crews around that I can see. Is this normal? Are the crew (Veterans) being excessively cautious? Do they know something I don't? Thanks, BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  13. Hi all. I got the idea from reading a post here to fire smoke at an enemy pillbox so it will stop killing all of my troops, but at the same time, I don't want my artillery spotters LOS to be blocked by the smoke. When a spotter is targetting a pillbox, and the timer is counting down until the shells start falling, would the artillery fire be interrupted by also having a mortar fire smoke at the pillbox? Thanks! BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  14. Well, I just got my CD about 6-7 days ago, and it is version 1.02. Regardless, the patch only calls for replacing the executable file, so just rename your current one cm103cd.oldexe or something like that and copy the patch exe over and see if it works how you expect it to. 15. Well, I tried it last night. I only copied the Valley of Trouble scenario into the Scenario directory of the final game since Chance Encounter was already there. Valley of Trouble seems to be working fine so far. I was able to load it and do my Setup fine. It took me into the 1st orders phase and that's where I quit for the night. Hopefully I won't run into trouble later on while playing this scenario. Valley of Trouble looks like it's going to be pretty hard. This should be interesting... ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  16. Well, I have tried the search function, but to no avail. What I have found is that the Beta demo scenarios are incompatible with the released game, but I've found no mention of the Gold demo scenarios being compatible with the Release version. If indeed the Gold demo is based on the code of the released game, I would think it should work. You might ask: "Why doesn't the git just try it instead of taking all this time to write on the board?" To which I would reply: "I'm at work, what else am I supposed to do?" Thanks, BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  17. Hi. I just got the Final Version on CD (I'm assuming it's version 1.02, but I haven't installed it yet). I want to play Valley of Trouble before I uninstall the demo because I saw that it is not included on the CD. Then I thought, "Why can't I just copy the scenarios into the Full Version and play them from there?" Anyone know if this works okay? Thanks, BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  18. Yes, which is 1.02 currently. 1.03 is coming soon apparently. BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  19. Von Brizee, I'm feeling really dumb here, but are you saying "Flieger Abwehr Kanone" means Anti-Aircraft Gun in German? If so, that's pretty cool. I never really thought about where that name came from. Joe, that's another one: grog. What is a grog/grognard? As a side question, in Saving Private Ryan, when the American soldiers are (rather stupidly it seems), all piling up on the German tank, and the Germans start firing a gun at them that rips them all apart, is that a FLAK gun? Sorry for dragging on this thread, but then again, it seems that most of you like to gab about this stuff. BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  20. Cool, thanks Joe. I've seen a couple of messages that talk about shooting a FLaK (I believe they left the 'A' lower case) gun at a tank, so I was confused, as I thought FLAK guns were used to shoot at aircraft. Could they be referring to desparate (or simply clever) uses of a FLAK gun? Thanks again, BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  21. Ok, here's my list of acronyms I don't understand (I'm sure more will follow): AFAIK OT (seen in subject line of a couple messages) PF (having something to do with tanks?) HEAT (a type of ammunition) FLAK (a German gun manufacturer? or Anti-Aircraft gun?) Thanks! P.S. Teutonicc, I checked out that help file, thanks! But it seems many of the acronyms in there don't fit with how they're being used in here. BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" 22. WendellM, Thanks. I definitely will be wary. I don't know about spending $30 for it though. I think I'll just pick your brains. Fionn, I would take a lost limb over a lost life any day (unless the head is considered a limb ). BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" 23. Cool, thanks guys (and girls?). I'll start compiling my list. BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
  24. Hi all. I'm new to Combat Mission, and wargaming in general for that matter, and I'm lost when reading many of the posts here because you all use so many acronyms! Is there a listing somewhere so I'm not forever clueless? Thanks, BeWary ------------------ "Liberty or Death?" Make it "Victory or Pretty Damned Badly Wounded", and I'm yours. - a prospective recruit during the American Revolution.
