I'm a CMBO vet, but this wasn't possible "back then". Some friends and I want to play CMAK by designing custom maps and having our troops bought at game startup. Is this possible in CMAK? This is for a campaign-like game we're planning. We plan to play the same map a number of different times with different units each time, to simulate fighting over "territories". Thanks! BeWary P.S. Have you tried installing DX 8 again? What was your graphics card before? If it was onboard video, you probably need to manually disable it using a jumper or through the CMOS/BIOS configuration screens. Did you uninstall the drivers for your old video card before installing the new card? If not, uninstall the old drivers, the new drivers, and reinstall the new drivers after a reboot.

I don't trust IE to do FTP too well. I suggest using WS_FTP. It's free, has been around forever, and works well. BeWary

This is why I'm anal about exporting my registry before I install new hardware or software. If you reinstalled the drivers, then the problem probably lies somewhere else in the registry. If you can't find a way to restore an old copy of the registry, I'm afraid you'll probably have to remove Win98 and reinstall it. I can help with that if you have questions. I even have a detailed e-mail written up when I helped someone else reinstall Windows. BeWary

Well, it might simply be that your computer is a little old. 700MHz is pretty slow by today's standards. I don't agree that a GeForce 256 should handle everything fine. It could certainly be part of your problem. You should first update drivers. Try to get the latest drivers for your sound card (from Creative) and video card (from NVidia). If that doesn't help, something else more serious might be causing the problem, or like I said, maybe it's just too old of a system.

IIRC, there's an option in Eudora that says something like "put text attachments in body of message". This is something you'd want to uncheck, because Eudora thinks the PBEM is regular text. As mentioned, the other option is to zip the file. It's usually as simple as right-clicking on the PBEM file and selecting "add to zip". Then just send the zip file. BeWary

By jerky, do you mean the mouse pointer jumps all over the area at random when you try to place a waypoint? Or do you mean low fps? I've seen the former, usually in overhead view only. Going to an over-the-shoulder view seems to fix it.

If those suggestions don't work, consider replacing your memory. I've seen bad chips cause random freezing/crashing on 2 separate machines. I recommend only getting memory from www.crucial.com. I've never seen them send out bad RAM. [ November 08, 2002, 12:44 PM: Message edited by: BeWary ]

In other words, have your friend do a WindowsUpdate to patch his system.

Do other programs/games also freeze at random? If so, you might have bad memory. Otherwise, try updating your sound and video drivers. See if your motherboard has a new BIOS version. That's about all I can suggest for now.

Hmmm... good news. I don't really know what the DMZ option normally does. I wouldn't think it would give you a second IP, unless your ISP allowed that, and I don't think it would work if it had the same IP as the router. I thought that DMZ just removes all protections for your computer, so basically anyone can get to it. Don't know how it affects the comp's IP though.

Ok, I'm a little late to the party, but I might have something to contribute. In order to host a game when behind a firewall, you'll have to do the following: 1) Get your router's IP address. That is the IP address that everyone else on the Net has to use in order to connect to your computer, regardless of what your computer's IP address is. You can usually get the IP from the router's configuration screen, but if not, this site will tell you what your router's IP is: http://www.whatismyip.com/ 2) Give your IP to your buddy who wants to join the game you're hosting. This is the IP he needs to give to CM. 3) Set your router to forward all packets addressed to port 7023 to your machine's local IP address (it's probably still 192.168.1.34). You may need to reboot the router after this change. Read the instructions carefully.

Problems with CM? I don't see why if you use good reference drivers from NVidia.

Make sure your FSAA video settings are set to NONE or 4X. That should do the trick.

Check the "install issues" thread at the top of the BBS. You may have a bad CD. You could also try updating your CD drive's firmware.

If you can't see the menus, how do you get into the game to play it? Anyway, check your FSAA settings (Full Screen Anti-Aliasing). Make sure it's either OFF or set to 4X.

Yeah, I've already asked both of them for a cease fire, but no response. Kinda sucks... I'd at least like to see the stats, even if they're only for a partial battle.

Thanks for the replies guys. Agua, you're right, TCP can be better, but with the wife and 2 young-uns, I'm one of those that cannot devote large chunks of time like that. Maybe I should try some very small (less than 500 point) TCP battles. GH, they're veterans far as I can tell (though you wouldn't be able to tell by judging their use of artillery ). Guess you win some, you lose some. I'm like you though. Even if I'm getting massacred, I finish the game, as I still find it fun to see just how long my troops can hold out. It's especially frustrating this time around though, because this is my second attempt to finish a game of All or Nothing. Against the CPU it never got close to town (even with 75 turns!), so the game was a dud. PBEM, the battle was finally reaching the outskirts of the town, and he quits! Argh... Is there a way to continue a game having the computer play the rest of your opponent's turns? Like loading the PBEM from the "Saved Game" directory and selecting a computer opponent? ... are other CMBO people having problems with their PBEM partners going AWOL in mid-PBEM? Maybe it is that CMBB has totally consumed them, or maybe it's me, but it is quite frustrating to put all sorts of time and effort into a PBEM, only to find yourself abandoned and unable to finish the game. The PBEM games I've done that have been completed are most enjoyable, but it almost makes me want to go back to the A.I. where at least I know the game can be finished. Is this a common problem for others? Out of the 4 different people I've played PBEMs with, 2 have gone AWOL ½-way thru the first game, and I don't think it's because there was a clear winner either way. It's hard to know exactly what you'll be able to get for that price. Prices vary widely for older technology, so you may be able to get a pretty good card for 40-60 bucks. www.pricewatch.com has a video-card pricing list. I would use that to get an idea of what you can get for your money. You might even be able to get a GeForce 3 Ti200 64MB if you spend 10-20 bucks more. If you buy online, just be careful who you buy from, although video cards are less likely to be bad when you get them. I try to only buy from online stores that are customer rated at www.bizrate.com. I've had good experiences with www.newegg.com, www.bzboyz.com, www.ajump.com , www.spartantech.com , www.emscomputing.com. If you need memory, I highly recommend getting it from www.crucial.com. I have yet to get bad or incompatible memory from them, which has been a problem in the past for me when buying from other stores. Good luck, BeWary

If you're crashing when clicking on your own bailed crews, that is a known bug. That has been the only crash bug I've had with the demo. Saving/loading games worked just fine. BeWary
