1. 'Safe Mode' worked! Thank you, thankyouverymuch! [/elvis]
2. Help! I bought my copy of CMAK directly from Battlefront (along with the companion book). I've tried installing off the CD and by copying Setup.exe directly to my harddrive and also tried installing to the default "Program Files\Battlefront\... etc" installation - same error happens either way I've tried. The install gets almost to the end and then this error pops up in a Windows box: I've tried Retry and the same error pops up. I also tried Ignore - the installation continues and gets to the end, then this error message pops up: I'm able to click OK, Next, etc. to 'finish' the install - shortcuts are created, the CMAK exe is in the directory...all looks good. (I noticed some DOS windows open up and run some kind of 'WAVPACK' decompression?) If I try to run Combat Mission Africe Korps.exe I get an error message saying that "OpenPlay.dll" cannot be found. (I tried copying the OpenPlay.dll from my CMBB install and it doesn't work - the screen goes black like the game is going to start up, but then after a second goes right back to my desktop). I've terminated all unnecessary programs when running the install and still no good. I have Windows XP Home Edition - Service Pack 1. Any other info you need please let me know and thanks for your help! - Jeff
3. I was also unable to play the Autosave for Citadel on TCP/IP. I tried to host it, my opponent tried to host it - no good. For me it would crash at the "enter password" screen, for my opponent, it would crash on the screen where it lists the IP addy. These crashes would require a hard reboot.
4. The key to a successful submarine campaign is to have Fog Of War turned "on". I had the same complaint re: submarines - they are spotted and destroyed too easily - but I had FOW "off". I tried it with FOW "on" and voila! The German subs in the North Atlantic and the Italian subs in the Med survive - just keep moving them around - do not let them sit in one place. . . .
5. Peronally, I'd like to see 1-week turns, regardless of season. My reasoning is mainly due to the MPP and production effects - and I believe it would allow for greater flexibility in preparing for major campaigns - Barbarossa for the Germans, Overlord for the Allies, etc. More turns = more time to prepare (i.e., build up an invasion force). For the sake of an example: Germany controls 200 MPP worth of resource hexes. During the Summer turns, this equates to 800 MPP/month (assuming 4-week months); 400 MPP/month during Spring and Fall; and 200 MPP during the Winter months. Would resources and production be affected by a change of seasons? Perhaps the current scheme was used as an abstraction for weather and thus the "campaign season"? I can understand that, since weather is not modelled, but why would it affect production? [ May 24, 2002, 02:58 PM: Message edited by: Purple4Ever ]
6. I was able to clear the island of enemy forces - Here's how I did it: Used all 4 Italian naval units to bombard. As I noted in another thread, each time a naval unit attacked, it lost 2-4 pts, while inflicting 0-2 pts of damage to the Brit air unit. I moved a German HQ (w/Manstein) and two air fleets, plus an Italian air fleet to Sicily and kept up a steady attack. However, the Malta air unit would always replace its losses the next turn . . . So, the combination of Italian Navy, a German HQ and three air fleets - after about 4 turns of constant attacks, finally cleared Malta. I put an Italian corps on a transport, but the game ended before it could occupy the Island! It was costly, especially for the Italian Navy. . .
7. Hm - So Malta, which is occupied by an air unit, cannot be invaded by sea? If this is so, then it seems the only way to occupy Malta is to pound it with the Italian Navy (which I've tried and always lose 4-5 naval points in each attack vs. 0-2 enemy air points lost - not a good tradeoff!) until the air unit is dead. . . .then land an army/corps. Are there paratroopers in the game?
8. and a third for Arizona, USA: I'm in Phoenix. 7 more and we can have our own CM get-together!
9.
quote:
and helicopters. what about helicopters.

and sharks. sharks with laser beams. ill-tempered sea bass are not acceptable replacements
10. Big, Big, Big Deep Purple fan. Did I mention I like Deep Purple? ------------------ "The mass of the [Red] army stationed in Western Russia is to be destroyed in bold operations involving deep penetrations by armored spearheads, and the withdrawal of elements capable of combat into the extensive Russian land spaces is to be prevented. 11. I agree... Considering that most ASL scenarios cannot be converted/copied exactly into CM (the main problems being leaders, SSR, and Victory Conditions) maybe this is a moot point, as long as credit is given where credit is due (for the original scenario design). -Jeff ------------------ "The mass of the [Red] army stationed in Western Russia is to be destroyed in bold operations involving deep penetrations by armored spearheads, and the withdrawal of elements capable of combat into the extensive Russian land spaces is to be prevented. 12. hmmph... what lousy news! I downloaded everything (maps, scenarios) last week and may still have the zip-files. I'm at work right now but will check when I get home and post an update. 14. LOL, I think what Pat means is that there were some in service during the Normandy Battles and even in 1945 (145 as of March). ------------------ "The mass of the [Red] army stationed in Western Russia is to be destroyed in bold operations involving deep penetrations by armored spearheads, and the withdrawal of elements capable of combat into the extensive Russian land spaces is to be prevented. 16. Hi Kford, I've found a reference to the Algonquin Regiment in the book The Western Front 1944: Memoirs of a Panzer Lehr Officer by Helmut Ritgen. The extended defense of the Scheldt estuary was primarily conducted by the LXVII Army Corps (commanded by General der Infanterie Sponheimer) with the 64th, 70th, 245th, and 711th Infantry Divisions and strong coastal artillery support. The 64th and 70th Infantry were "bodenstandiger" (static) infantry divisions assigned to coastal defense. These divisions had very limited mobility and consisted of older personnel with little experience and a low level of training. They had fewer vehicles, mobile artillery, communications, and supply services than did normal infantry divisions. The 64th ID (commanded by Generalleutnant Eberding) was initially established on 26 June 1944 in Wahn near Cologne. It was sent to Flanders in August and, although it was filled with veteran soldiers from destroyed eastern divisions, it was by not means an elite division. In spite of this, the Canadians later christened it "the best infantry division we have met"!(p. 216). An item specific to the engagement you may be referring to (p. 219): During the night 13 to 14 September, the Canadian Algonquin Regiment conducted the first enemy attack across the Leopold Canal in the area of Moerkerke. A small bridgehead was initially expanded with the help of strong artillery support, but it was eliminated after a counterattack by the 64th Infantry Division supported by organic artillery and marine fire. This encouraged the fledgling 64th Division. East of the Terneuzen Canal, the 1st Polish Armored Division (on the left flank of the 4th (Canadian) Armored Division) systematically compressed the bridgehead with superior firepower, until the harbour of Terneuzen was also lost on 21 September. Hope that helps. Good luck with the scenario design. 17. Im 32 and know what yer talkin' 'bout! Don't forget - they switched to a Sherman and towed their Stuart behind them - in battle even!! Do I win?? ------------------ "The mass of the [Red] army stationed in Western Russia is to be destroyed in bold operations involving deep penetrations by armored spearheads, and the withdrawal of elements capable of combat into the extensive Russian land spaces is to be prevented. 18. Here's one I never understood - There was a pro football player with the last name "Abdul-Jabbar" and he had that on his jersey - - until the lawyers for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (the basketball player) "convinced" him to change it to "A. Jabbar" or somesuch - would this have been a trademark issue? Anyone know the particulars of this situtation? Thanks, - Jeff ------------------ "The mass of the [Red] army stationed in Western Russia is to be destroyed in bold operations involving deep penetrations by armored spearheads, and the withdrawal of elements capable of combat into the extensive Russian land spaces is to be prevented. 20. hello, i've emailed you a scan of the scenario card. i've got pretty much all of the "official" ASL scenarios ever published (and some from 3rd party magazines), so if you need anymore, let me know! Rgds, Jeff ------------------ "The mass of the [Red] army stationed in Western Russia is to be destroyed in bold operations involving deep penetrations by armored spearheads, and the withdrawal of elements capable of combat into the extensive Russian land spaces is to be prevented. 21. Hi all, I know this may be asking much, but I am wondering if all the scenarios on the CMHQ site are available in one (or more) ZIP files? That site is a dog, and even when it's up, it takes forever to get a scenario. Thanks in advance! - JRB ------------------ "The mass of the [Red] army stationed in Western Russia is to be destroyed in bold operations involving deep penetrations by armored spearheads, and the withdrawal of elements capable of combat into the extensive Russian land spaces is to be prevented. 22. Yes! What is the deal? I've been trying, intermittently, for the past 4 days to access the site - no dice. That website is in need of some serious redesign. . . The "ASL 2 CM" website is a stellar example of good design and accessibility.
23. Hidden & Dangerous? I remember the demo had a mission where you had to move your team across a bridge, all the while taking out german sentries, etc. Don't remember air support hitting a target, though.....
24. Hi, My $.02: I've played as the germans and had an immobilised Panther "assaulted" by US Squads (don't know if they were engineers or not). In the 3D environment, it looks like they're throwing grenades - I guess this is the games way communicating a "close assault" (I think ASL has something like that too - the squad has to pass a PAATC?). Regards, - JRB
25. Hi, Wanted to add my observation of this "phenomena": I am still using the latest Beta 24 patch (NOT the new 1.1). Whilst playing a scenario recently, I had a panther, on a low hill with a nice view of a village/town and the fields surrounding the town. At one point, the Panther kept switching (for 20-30 seconds) targets, rotating hull and turret to fire. The two targets it kept switching between was a "Machinegun?" (full FOW) about 100m away and a "Crew?" about 350m away. At first, I watched with amusement as the Panther danced back and forth, and then, in frustration, I was shouting "Pick a target and fire you fool!" Now, these were two (seemingly) harmless "soft" targets, but I would hate to see this happen when enemy AFV's are around....
