I've done all that. However you cannot control map-edges in operations.

    Thanks for your attention Martin.

I will send you the file. It's an historical scenario of the 2nd. Pz. div. attacking the village of Marnach on the skyline drive in Luxemburg and it's push forward to the town of Clervaux during the first days of the Battle of the Bulge.

In the meantime I've already altered the set-up zones, window-size and force distribution, but the AI still does not attempt to move forward except for the first battle.

Would appreciate you take a look at it and give some advice.

Well, from time to time I hub over to Rotterdam. So, I wouldn't mind a little detour. However, I am not an experienced photographer nor do I possess a digital camera. Eventually, I can scan them or ask the photoshop to digitalize them. Again I have no experience whatsoever.

Do I have to look for particular names ?

Great site, you have, Michael !

I came already across it during previous quests, but I never realized, you were the honorable owner.

  3. Following url links you to a diary of 1st. Bn. The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada during the months of September and October 1944.

    Blackwatchdiary

Starting 18th. of September and during the month of October the 2nd. was pretty active in the area where I live now and grew up.

They cleared the north bank of the Albert Canal near Antwerp, where they needed six weeks to liberate my hometown - Merksem (suburb of Antwerp)(not much info on the German units, but I know that there was a Flemish SS-unit involved) and to march towards the villages of Woensdrecht and Hoogerheide located at the dutch/Belgian border, (beginning of the causeway which linked the peninsula of South Beveland with the main continent) There they fought the 85. ID KG Chill. (mainly remnants of german parachute units)

Terrain : partly moors, forests and inundated polders

  4. Still working on this operation where the player takes the defensive role against an attacking AI force.

Whatever the parameters are set, advance or assault, fanaticism up to 50 %, attacking forces triple the defending points, I cannot get the AI across the map. This is not due to my skillful defensive play, but simply because the AI doesn't advance his troops.

Even more weird : They retreat !

The first battle usually works out fine. Aggressive German troops storm the allied defensive strongholds, which results in a considerable gain of terrain for the AI. However, when the second battle opens, the AI has spread his forces along the frontline, but during the next turns the AI turns his tail and moves his forces towards an undetermined place on the map.

I increased the number of turns per battle as I thought that the AI needed more time to mass up his troops and prepare a push forward somewhere later in the battle.

But nothing happens..at turn 30 of the 3rd. battle, I hit the surrender button and I can see all that "enemy" armor and infantry sitting in a corner of the map guns and vehicles facing east !

(BTW parameters specifies attacker comes from the east)

    Map size : 2400 m x 4480 m, battle window 1600 m

Any tips to stimulate AI to take up arms again after first battle ?

  5. I am designing this operation - December 1944 - map 4480 x 2400 m, German assault,

window 1600 m. What's the maximum number of units, I can pick ? I wanted to set-up an operation where the player acts as defender against AI attacker, but it would be still challenging due to the force distribution. I roughly estimated that the Germans need abt. 12.000 pts, while I would leave the allied defender with 6.000 à 7.000. pts

These numbers would not appear at once, but would be distributed over the 5 reinforcements. As I experienced during test-play that the attacker suffers a casualty -rate of abt. 50 %, I wanted to increase his forces. But when I started modifying the units, the buying was suddenly limited to 8.500 for the Germans. Whatever combination I tried, I could not even return to the initial setup. Is there an absolute limit or does map-size, chosen quality, time, etc... affect availability ?

  6. I refer to the explanation by BTS in reply to the questions by Franko :

    6. Reserve Pools. How are the "battalion", "regimental" or "divisional" reserves triggered? Can you be more specific than the "things start hitting the fan" stuff contained in the manual?

The computer looks at the relative strengths of the two sides after each battle. If one side is doing poorly, the reserves may be released. The threshold at which a reserve unit is released depends on its type. Battalion reserves aren't that hard to trigger, i.e. you don't have to be doing too badly to receive these. But divisional reserves are given only when things are going quite badly.

Attacker gets reserve if relative strength to defender is below...

    1.8:1 Battalion

    1.4:1 Regimental

    1.0:1 Division

Defender gets reserve if relative strength to attacker is below...

    1:2 Battalion

    1:3 Regimental

    1:4 Division

  7. Hi Bill,

I always appreciated your scenarios as you are able to put up a tactical balance between the forces engaged in a historical environment. That make the scenarios fun to play against AI.

However, as the main attraction of CM is the 3D-engine, I would appreciate if scenario designers paid a little more attention to the lay-out of their maps. As my site focuses on the Battle of the Ardennes several people did send me so called historical scenarios regarding the Bulge. Knowing the area quiet well, most of the time I get disappointed when I open them and find out that I cannot recognize a single landmark. Designers seem to be timid using the elevation-function in the editor and randomly dot the map with threepatches, hills and houses. Considering the scale that CM is working in, I esteem the location of specific landmarks and the relation to each other essential to an historical scenario.

So, I agree with groundpounder on the importance of creating convincing maps and encourage people to lay a hand on a topo-map of the specific area they're working on.

Should I tell you, that I am eager to see what you did to Marvie and Manhay ?...

Thanks for the addictive hours of suspense you've put together for us.

  8. hi Red Devils

  9. Magua has sent me the first series of his rural building mods. Modest as he is, he points out that his winterversion is "a little bit quick and nasty", but to me, they look as a piece of art. Zip-files available for downloading at the link below.

Guess you haven't read the thread thoroughly. Warphead refers to his report and pictures of his trip to the Ardennes, Machineman mentioned the Walcheren Island in the Scheldt estuary.

Of course you can visit the Arnhem area, the Vosges, Hürtgenwald, or why not, visit remnants of the Maginot-line in Lorraine (France). If you like WWI battlesites, you can still visit Ypres, Verdun or the plains of the Somme-river Also, for those who are interested, Waterloo isn't far away.

All a.m. sites have local museums related to the battles that have taken place. I am sure Italian members can give you some good links to interesting areas in their country.
