  1. Hi Shatter.

Ok. If the pc works as expected in safe mode witout the crashes then it suggests it's a driver conflict somewhere along the lines that is causing the machine to hang.

When you reinstalled did you format the drive first or did you simply 'upgrade' over the top? It might be worth formatting and starting from scratch.

As for installing XP I wouldn't bother as it will hog the resources of the machine. You would get it on ok but it would run slower than it does already!

    Thanks mate.. smile.gif

To add, I'll be overclocking the graphics subsystem too. I'm not sure whether to use my 9700 Pro or my Ti4200. I'll probably go with the ATi in all honesty as even though I have to play it ' fogless'. The AF makes it look stunning! This way I can keep up to date with the other new games that are coming out soon like Hidden & Dangerous II (will be another fav)..

Also, I'm ditching my Audigy 1 in favour of a new M-Audio 7.1 card, which sounds better than the soundblaster linked to my speakers.

  3. I can see where you're coming from. Interesting point. I just thought that rarity (as modelled in the game) meant what was available when. So you couldn't buy a Tiger in 41, for example, with rarity set to variable or standard, but you could with it set to off. I'm missing the point here obviously.

  4. Just placed an order for some new parts from my favourite online overclocking store. Got to keep up with the times guys :D

    3.0Cghz (800fsb) Pentium IV

    ASUS canterwood motherboard

    1gb Corsair 3200 ram

All to go into my lovely Vapochill PE system cooling the processor down to a lovely wintery 4 degress under load. I expect to be running this at around the 3.7ghz mark in within the week. Should be just about perfect for those 9000 point engagements! :D

  5. The is correct, however, the DDRII variety of 9800 won't be readily available everywhere and it will cost the earth. Also, FWIW, the up and coming games (at least until 2004) won't make the most of the 256mb card, with the only exception (I can thnk of) being DoomIII. With all this in mind, it hardly seems worth the £400 or so the card will demand..

What we need are better drivers for both Nvidia and ATi cards.

  6. Hi mate,

The fog does not work full stop with the Radeon cards I'm afraid. Just something we have to live with. Believe me, I own 2 decent Nvidia cards and a 9700Pro, and the ATi card eats them both for breakfast smile.gif .

You want to be using the latest cats with the Ati card. New cats will be released at the end of the month so I've been told. Although you won't be able to use FSAA with them and CMBB you will be able to use AF, which you can nudge all the way up. It looks pretty damn good, especially on larger displays.

FWIW, (useless fact number one) if you had bouught a 9500 NP, with L shaped memory on the pcb, you could have patched the firmware turning it into a 9700

  7. Very basically, the higher the setting, ie 4xs, the better the quality of the graphics. For the sake of excellent AA, you get slower framerates, obviously. So you comprimise depending on your system. I quite like running 2x on my laptop, and all the way up to 8x FSAA (on my Ati9700Pro) :D

4xs is basically an 'optimised' x4 setting.
