1. I don't even think of CC as a wargame. If you want to compare somthing worth comparing then compare CM to SPWAW. At least they are both turn based. Real-time sucks if you want a good wargaming experience. ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
2. All I want is a roster and the ability to re-crew abandoned AFV's if the vehicle is ok and the crew recovers. Other than that, leave as is. CUZ IT ROCKS!!! ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
3. Maastrictian: HAHA! Yes, I did ask my question under an "inane an uninformative" topic header didn't I? I did that to avoid embarrasment but I guess it backfired. Thanks for your help though.
4. I try to avoid one on one duals with Tigers or Panthers. They always seem to kill me regardless of who got off the first shot. The best way I have found is to attack simutaneously from two (or more) directions. The enemy panzer now has to deal with incoming fire from multiple angles. You stand a good chance of losing a tank but you may just get him. The last time I used this tactic I had overwhelming numbers and had isolated a Panther. I rushed his 12 o clock with four Shermans while an M-10 TD advanced on his 5 o clock and another M-10 on his 7 o clock. One of my Shermans got immobilized but that was it. Well, unless you count the Panzerscheck team hidden in some scattered trees 75 meters from my nearest M-10. He took out an M-10 as soon as it stopped. ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
5. Thank you for answering my retarded question. I never would have asked but my 5MWST turned up absolutely no results searching for said words in the subject header. If you search the message text it turns up so many results a person couldn't possibly muddle throught it all.
6. What does AFAIK mean? What does IIRC mean? ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
7. I think every AFV has an application at which it excels. One of my favorites is the Sherman 105. Oh, baby! This infantry sweeper will decimate soft targets and with it's HEAT rounds take out most armor threats. And because HEAT is not dependent on kinetic energy to kill you can stand off and plink. It's turret is fast, it moves quick, it can carry a squad. Need I go on? I also have a love for most light tanks. I really like the Stuart. My last escapade that involved a Stuart had me running it up behind a Panther in a city and shoving a little 37mm pill up it's tailpipe! That brought a smile to my face. ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War

9.
quote:
Originally posted by Pillar: So, since I'm looking for accuracy I'd like something that is suitably large calibre, because I want to get used to the kick, and I want something that I can attach scopes too etc.

The problem with starting out with a large-bore centerfire to "get used to the kick" is that you can (and most likely will) develop a flinch. Target shooters all over the world practice with .22's to "beat the flinch" that unconciously develops with repeated firing of hard-kicking rifles. I think anyone who owns a rifle owes to themselves to get a .22 also. As to which centerfire rifle to get? Any bolt-action from a major manufacturer will serve you well.
10. "Modelled realistically" means that the results of a battle or exchange of fire in the game of Combat Mission closely approximate what would happen in "real" life. Hence the term, "realistic". You could substitute the word "programmed" for the word "modelled" and end up with the same meaning. I must admit that I did not fight in WWII and have never ridden in a scout car or even come under 2 inch mortar fire but it just seems logical that if a hand grenade could take out an open-topped vehicle then certainly an aerodynamic explosive projectile falling from great height and scoring a direct hit could render said vehicle combat ineffective. ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
11. It's not a "one-in-a-million" shot. The Scout car is an open topped vehicle and it's got thin armor to boot. Add to that the assumption of the 2-inch mortar being direct-fired at the Scout car and you have the recipe for a brew-up. When I play CM I use direct-fire mortars against anything open-topped and stationary. It seems to be modeled realistically to me. ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
12. It would also be cool if SPA could fire indirectly.
13. Here's a tip: Try thinking like you are actually there on the battlefield. Move the view down to level 1 and scope out the battlefield from your soldiers' point of view. You're looking for positions that offer cover but allow a clear view of main approaches. Try to cover the approach with intersecting fields of fire. Hitting the enemy from different angles really puts the hurt on 'em. The German squads devastate from close range so keep 'em hidden. Suppress the enemy infantry with machine gun fire from long range and when they close unleash your infantry. You might try a flanking manuever. It'll help if you keep your Stugs positioned so they all have the same LOS, that way if a Sherman pokes his head out all your Stugs will open up. Once the enemy armor is defeated bring those Stugs out of hiding but keep 'em at least 100-200 meters from enemy infantry. They'll have a field day. I have the full version now and I only played Chance Encounter once on the demo. I played as the Americans and I got a total victory. The Germans surrendered. My first impression of CM was that it was too easy. Elsdorf (in the full version) changed my mind. Last tip: Don't think gamey. Think real life. What works/worked in real life. P.S. I used my Shermans to destroy the buildings that German AT teams were in. Sounds like the AI is doing the same thing! ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War [This message has been edited by Cybeq (edited 07-15-2000).]
14. I have noticed the problem you speak of but my fix is simple and effective. Simply taget the ememy you want to fire on. Even if it's out of LOS it will train it's main gun on said enemy until it gets a shot. ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
15. I use unarmed fast movers to move laterally behind my main line. I'm alway careful to keep it out of ememy LOS. The other way I use them is gamey but just run 'em forward and see what kills it. ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
16. I think what happened was pretty realistic. You have to realize that in real life you can't make decisions for the tank commander. He gets his orders and then executes them his way. By the way, doesn't the Stuart have a 37mm gun? ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
17. Now that I have the full version of the game I see that all scenerios are not created equal. I had a much rougher time with the "First Clash.." scenerio. Although the krauts eventually surrendered on that one too. Also, I didn't know I could give the AI more assets before I got the game manual. I just started the sunken lane. We'll see how that goes. ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
18. The visual representation is an abstraction of the underlying 3D engine and physics. Thus what you see isn't necessarily what is happening. It just looked like the main gun hit the soldier. In reality it impacted 10-20 meters away. Turn the scaling to realistic to get a better idea of what is happening. And remember that they use 3 men to represent 7-12 men. You can't actually see them take hits. ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
19. Schugger: I don't know if this would work or not but here is my advice. A whole lot depends on the terrain. So your plans have be dynamic and adaptive. I try to scout the position with an expendable unit first to get some more intel. "INF?" doesn't really tell you much. AT team? Mortars? MG? You don't know. Assuming it's a couple squads then I would take one squad around the left flank and one around the right (if you have a covered approach) Send HQ with one of the flanking squads. Bring the flankers up to the edge of LOS of the enemy but not over. Now move (crawl or sneak) the third squad forward to the edge of LOS. Now through careful use of the pause function time all squads to show themselves at the same time. Now the enemy is experiencing incoming fire from three directions and they have to split their fire three ways. Whichever squad is receiving the least amount of incoming fire select and advance on the enemy position. Basically I try to establish two bases of intersecting fire and then assault the position. If they outnumber you this will not work. If they have positions covering the position you are trying to attack this will not work. (Although you could lay a smoke screen in front of the covering force) Second option is to shell the crud out of 'em. ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
20. Hmmmm.... Interesting topic. I just got the game myself so my only comment is to chime in with Shooter. I played the gold demo assault on the segfreid line and I kept my flamers safely out of the fray. When I felt brave enough to move them from hiding and make German flavored pop tarts they up and surrendered on me! DOH! ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
21. I want to second Dar's original statement. Mortars rock! Before CM my wargame of choice was Steel Panthers. In SP mortars were anemic, pitiful, and useless for anything but throwing smoke. I remember reading somewhere that most injuries/casulties in modern warfare are caused by mortars. I didn't believe it was even possible until I used them in CM. My first CM mortar experience was when I used a 60mm in direct fire to ELIMINATE a German 150mm inf gun. That would never happen in SP! But it could happen in real life and it DID happen in CM! LONG LIVE COMBAT MISSION! ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
22. For anyone who has played the gold demo scenerios: Is it just me or were they too easy if played as the Americans? In the first one I got a major victory and in the second (assault on the segfreid line) the Germans surrendered. I have the full game now and have yet to play any sceneros. How do they compare in difficulty to the demo? ------------------ "To subdue the enemy without fighting is the supreme excellence." -Sun Tzu, The Art Of War
