  1. Thanks.

I don't know, but do all the tanks in CM sound exactly the same? Is there only one .wav file for them all?

You would think that the Tiger doesn't sound like the Pershing, and so on, not to mention differences based on vehicle size.

  2. Science Fiction, with ships that looked like spark plugs in bad res on cardboard chits.

There were destroyers, battlecruisers and carriers.

One alien race used to have this "slip drive", you would aim for a certain spot on the map but you would never know where you would end up.

The game started with only one side's units on it I think, and gradually the other would have to reveal himself as he shot -- something like the Romulan cloaking device in Star Fleet Battles.

There were fighter squadron chits that were three hexes in size, they would take hit points until you had to flip the chit over, and later take the squadron off entirely as they were eliminated.

Anyway we played that game for hours and hours. Lots of fun, but obviously AH put no budget behind it.

Before that I played SPI's Panzer'44, that was fun too but that's another story... Anyone think of converting some of those old scenarios and maps to CM? The scale is different I know. I'm just rambling now, waiting for a PBEM to come back.

    Flipper,

This game is partly "Advanced Squad Leader computerized" -- in ASL buildings converted to rubble caused collateral damage in their vicinity.

I agree that those nuclear explosions look like a bit much sometimes...

  4. I sometimes try to use them. TRY is the operative word here.

My hope is that there will be a good terrain feature (e.g. a patch of woods on the side of a hill) that I can tow the gun toward, then deploy it in the early turns of the game, before it is spotted. The spot has to have a good LOS, preferably a valley, where I think my opponent might use to reach the flags.

So far that hasn't worked though.

I played one encounter game against Deadline last year where I had two towed British AT guns, I set them up to shore up my rear. One of them shot a few rounds, but in the end they didn't amount to much.

I have CM 1.1, but I also kept the old ones.

If you want let me know which version you're using, and send me a setup. I play PBEM.

Have you been assimilated by the CM Borg yet, or has it disappeared?

  6. I find the JagdTiger very vulnerable from the side.

In ASL once I parked a JT before an intersection, behind a stone wall "V". Behind me were stone buildings, and my opponent never had a chance to put infantry in those buildings.

The JT took many direct hits, but they never took it out.

The JT had a nice line of sight down two streets, it was beautiful.

  7. I still think that tungsten is given too much of an emphasis in CM, in ASL that wasn't the case, if I remember correctly.

I talked with some friends over Christmas, and it was pretty obvious to us that the Shermans are overly powerful. esp. when we read that sometimes it took four Shermans to take out one Tiger.

This is an American game, though. I don't know if that played a part?

Zaffod, in the show or the movies they said he was from Iowa, but the actor grew up in Montreal.

I'm afraid my sound mod wouldn't be very accurate, I'm a francophone from Ottawa. I could do a mod for some Quebeckers, that might be interesting.

  9. FYI,

I installed the 1.1 beta mod, and sometimes the game just disappears on me.

I don't remember this happening while running without the beta mod, or on the original version I got on the CD.

Usually this is when I am playing on huge maps, I suspect it has something to do with lack of memory.

Windows95, 64M RAM, unknown video card, Pentium Pro no less. NEC Versa LX laptop. I think it's about 2-3 years old.

I installed almost every hi-res mod I could find.

Needless to say, by now the sound is sometimes choppy and it takes the computer a while to show me what's going on, but I made a conscious decision to install those mods.

You know -- I have to support all those mod makers out there.
