  1. From my experiance it is nearly impossible do defend " behind " some obstacle like bocage or walls when the unit status say

"located in: open ground". As soon as the unit is adversly affected by enemy fire it heads to the nearest terrain tile which offers more protection.

However, if the unit is in a foxhole and behind a wall or hedgerow the usually hold their ground, but you get foxholes only when playing the defender. Juju's exposure tables are really a great game aid.

And you are of course right, Jarmo. For some reason this slipped past my attention; tanks using their main gun do not fire theír coax MGs - silly me

Really? My tanks fire the MG's along with their main gun when I select the "Use main gun" option - unless it is the crappy Hetzer which seems to be unable to use it's remote controlled dingsbums and a Jagdpanzer IV which couldn't fire it's hull mounted MG when he's hull down.

  4. 109 Gustav, thanks for digging out all those buried threads. It was a real pleasure to read them again; they are real classics smile.gif

Tiger, the CMBO birds are modelled quite realistically. Those birds have endured almost five years of bitter fighting and got quite used to the noise of even the hardest battle.

Compared to modern birds, which became wimps due to junk food, TV soaps and Quiz shows the typical battle bird in the ETO wasn't easy to scare off.

  5. I do not understand why abandoned vehicles remain on the field at all. Shouldn't they be retrieved to get repaired? So far I've never get a vehicle back which was either knocked out ( not brewed up )or abandoned due to gun damage or immobilisation.

I'm interested to know if someone else had more luck with vehicle recovery in operations.

  6. Welcome Vitalis

Most of the mods work only with the full version of the game, but I remember that CoolColJ has made some very good mods for the demo version only. Unfortunately I haven't got the URL to his homepage so you have to contact him via E-Mail.

If you are short on money, contact your local organ donation center. Once you have the full version in your hand you ain't got that much use for some of your body parts.

  7. I usually order any captured units to move off map ( to my map edge ) and so far they never managed to "free" themselves even if the were unguarded by any troops from my side.

POWs can only become free again if units from their side get close to them and they "see" a chance to escape unharmed and even then they're useless in terms of combat effectiveness as they are the absolutely unarmed.

I also remember that this was discussed in the past and the wisest tactic is indeed to retreat your POWs from the map ( IIRC Steve has stated this ).

I've found some dated threads which you might find of interest. Here you are:

    Edit:

I've just finished a game where I had moved the lone survivor of a MG team off map. The AAR screen shows one captured soldier so it really works.

  8. 4) I've experienced several times that I spot the foxholes more easily than any hidden troops in it. That was not just in open terrain but also true for foxholes in scattered trees.

The magic foxhole doubling during setup by splitting squads has a drawback though:

Splitting squads does lower your global morale and so you should use this option with care. Check jasoncawley@ameritech.nets ( what a handle, btw wink.gif ) excellent OP thread on this forum. It is a motha- beautiful topic and it is there.

  9. Big Brother @ work, Kingfish?

Well, I should be already in bed now but I could somehow sense your omnipresence, must be the usual rotten stench of defeat, I assume biggrin.gif Who wonders if my blood-crazed trucks are the only thing you're after? I would gladly move one of them into your LOF as I'm one of those good guys who like to give their opponents at least a slight feeling that they could influence the outcome of a given battle - before I steamroll them ( even with Vergeltungs Trucks ).

Actually, I think I've found the reason behind the issue: As it is the 12th Shappy Schmoks unit I have the dubious honor to blunder into battle with, most of them doesn't have a driving license yet. Or they've located and already looted the Schnapps Depot Kingfish and me are fighting for ( which makes me the automatic winner, btw. ) or a combination of both.

Heck, late night chell specking does not work for me

  10. The only way to I've find out to delay artillery fire in CM is by constantly adjusting the target point in the order phase of each turn ( green target line ).

Works well to preserve some ammo and to spoil an opponent's advance.

Don't know if this is that what you're looking for, Scipio ( the elder? wink.gif )

  11. " Brrr! Steady Darling! " said Rottenführer Liebig to his beloved Opel truck. But all his attempts to calm down the beast has remained futile for the last three turns.

No matter what clever driving trick Liebig pulls out of his sleeve, the truck remains out of control - even worse, all trucks of his transport platoon show a similar behavior and try to move to hull down position on a small hill.

Either the trucks have become victims to a strange disease or the drivers have turned fanatic. OK, they're SS ( Safety S*cks ) and they may had some dreams about driving strait into Kingfish's MLR with blazing guns like those freaky Punx from the Mad Max Movie, collecting Armour badges and Iron Crosses and be invited to one of Adolph's famous dinner parties for spoiling the Allied advance, but...

Seriously, they really ignore my orders to stay put or move them out of the harms way.

They also decide to make their advance through scattered trees and managed so far one self immobilization and abandonment while doing so.

    Back to my cell,

    Schugger
