  1. I agree especially on first hand German sources. Primarily my sources from reading about the Red Army first hand was from iremember.ru Of course Ive read Glantz, Beevor, Zaloga and all the "famous" authors. As I pointed out Im not taking a side, the Germans had no problem executing whole families of those deemed traitorous. When I return home Ill add more sources from my library at home - again though I never cited a specific source, which is why my post is full of IIRC and is more an amalgation of things Ive read about the subject over the years. And I have seen about one or two interviews from the 90s where frontoviks admitted to atrocities. And gladly said the Germans deserved it. Which seems about right on the sample size of armies known to have committed atrocities, I recently saw for the first time interviews (recent) of ex German forces admitting freely to atrocities which was new to me. I agree about most sources putting it on other units - like the Free French putting their atrocities blame on North African units. Ill be back later with some sources but tbh I dont really have a dog in the fight and Im not gonnna troll through dozens of books for a few lines of evidence.. All I can say is it may be similar to Ambrose lying about things in Citizen Soldiers. Some others can get.. odd about their country.
  2. Perhaps. And yes I know I didnt cite any sources but this is a fairly well written about subject and I.ve always read it was pretty commonplace. This WAS the army that placed blocking units to machine gun running friendlies. If I may enquire about your sources, were they printed in the Soviet era? Even post Soviet era there can be a lot of bias. For example here in America the general public basically that doesnt get into WW2 basically sees WW2 as a US show ignoring the late entry to the war, etc. The officers vs privates thing is interesting of course and would make sense. Still- 1.to really make a comprehensive argument we really should have more than one source and especially if the sources are first hand. 2. it must be remembered that from Soviet records of that time people werent just risking dirty looks in the street meaning sadly almost everything put out by official Soviet sources needs to be handled with caution as to its veracity. ( hell this is still true - when a poll of Russians asked their greatest of all time politician they named some figure from the end of Czarist times... until the survey company admitted Stalin really won but they didnt want to put him at #1; see also Kremlin use of video game stillsas proof of Western nefariousness, bla bla) This includes memoirs at the time. Every government including all the Western Allies also committed atrocities and propagated propaganda. The scale between the Western allies and the SU and indeed 3rd Reich however are night and day. 3. the above is especially important. the widespread looting, rape and chaos ( that the Germans did just the same as in Russia) is well documented especially once the Red Army enters Germany. Yet I have yet to see a soldiers account mentioning any of this. 4. The percentages on liberated POWs are going to be somewhat skewed no matter what we do because most Russian PoWs didnt survive German captivity for most of the war. EDIT: interesting I want to read some articles to see how I feel about the guy. I *DID* notice he went to fight for Russian backed Ukrainian rebels. Hmm..
  3. Sorry @DMS but everything Ive eber read about Ww2 in the East, from American, British, German, Russian and other sources all universally agree that yes sometimes Red Army PoWs were reinstated to the army no prob or were given weapons then punished after hostilities cease. However about 90% Ive read points to the Communist regime seeing being captured as a crime of cowardice in itself, and plus you were now exposed to "idealogical" influences. IIRC the accounts I remember reading from Russian frontoviki themselves was they were expected to have become partisans and it wasnt understood why they hadnt or hadnt died fighting. Im not claiming all ex German Pows were executed, but id wager 3 or 4/5s that actually survived German captivity were penalized in some form - aka gulag for 5 or 10 years or whatever. Hard to tell besides they were arrested and vanished because of the ever present lies and secrecy of the USSR. I mean after all lets not give the Russians too much credit on being reasonable - WW2 started over Poland which was invaded only once the Russians said ok and even invaded its Eastern part 3 weeks in. These same Russians demanded that territorial agreement be upheld with a straight face when meeting with Churchill and Roosevelt at the end of the war. It must be remember this was the government that perpetrated Katyn, Stalin bragged was the only army in the world where retreat was more dangerous than attack etc. Same regime that also seems to have heavily embellished the facts about Pavlovs House in Stalingrad. And outright perhaps made up a story about a fight to the death of several soldiers near Tula or Vyazma. It was mentioned here before - yes I know this last reference is insanely vague so Ill look for a link -but in essence it was found that these several soldiers who died "for the Rodina" after taking down hordes of Germans; it was found something was off. For one it was found some of them were not dead. And two it was found IIRC one even had deserted in that time frame. War time propaganda is one thing. Edith Cavell the Brit Ww1 nurse who was executed by the Germans and hordes of propaganda put out about it seems actually was a spy ' despite vehement statements otherwise for decades. The West also made up stuff like Germans crucifying babies on Belgium (wonder if the SVR. got their Ukrainian baby agitprop from a history book). Point Im making is in wartime of course ppl will lie and villainizr your enemies. the problem is when the propaganda grows and grows and continues well after the war is over. Its totally in the Eastern Blocs interest to lie about what really happened to Pows liberated. Once again this is a regime that ecen after Stalin put up the Berlin Wall and everything and with a straight face told the world it was to "keep people out of the socialist paradise" when any moron living knew the truth. Also ps Stalins government also famously would makr you disappear frol pictures if deemed persona non grata i.e. Yezhov and his stroll with Stalin along the Moscow Canal
  4. my advice is to ditch playing the AI immediately. playing humans is SOOO satisfying when you win and the AI teaches bad habits - unless its crafted by a master like JonS or LLF and even then because the Ai can only react tactically. it will not fot example shift troops or counterattack unless the designer implements orders, and even then its not reacting to you its following a script. Also the AI cannot attack. Yes you can play as defender but the AI just really isnt that great at attacking though mind you some scenario creators or campaign creators have made the AI competent as an attacking force. e.g. Scottish Corridor campaign. But to truly succeeed or be dangerous in an attack you have to be able to react and think - change avenue of attack or pull back. The AI cannot do this. Also it cannot area target - so where a human will lay suppression fire or keep blasting a hedgerow youre guys are behind just no longer visible the AI will cease fire if sight of targets lost. Same with artillery - the AI wont target unless it actually sees an enemy. whereas you and other humans can blast an obvious position with preplotted turn 1 arty or call arty into a forest you saw enemy units run into and lost sight of. you know theyre in there but cant see them. mind everyone plays different and the campaigns are fun especially if youre waiting for PBEM turns. but finding a couple good pbem friends and playing the scenarops and discussing the combat can be a great help. and dont worry everyones awful at first pretty much. this is by far the best game community i know of here of any game IMHO and also the game company too. nowadays a few other companies will similarly patch the game if provided proof of historical inaccuracies for example, yet BFC pioneered this in my experience, Id never before when I first joined this site (after lurking 9 mnths) 18 yrs ago. id neber before seen game developers so often interact with and take into consideration community suggestions. for example a year or two after cmbn came out I posted a complaint that the bursts of MGs was too mechanical it.d be the same 5 rnd or whatever it was burst. others discussed it too so I dont know if it was just me but I was delighted that in a patch a month or two later the bursts were randomized. 4 rounds, 10, 7, etc. EDIT: I note you mentioned the difficulty level. It should be emphasozed to you that the difficulty only relates to realism on firing times, fog of war and chain of command. otherwise its the same ai and weapons strength from bottom to top. Id give elite a try it sounds daunting but trust me you.ll be surprised its the same just a little more realistic. the differences are really small compared to changing the difficulty on any other game really though. If you have any questions PM and Ill try to shoot you an answer. Also mortars are invaluable and as a rule I use the US 60mms and Brit 51mms in direct fire. if you do an on map direct fire mission i suggest using target light. it just slows the mortar crews rate of fire. you ll be shocked at how quickly they burn through ammo. also its good for some weapons like mortars to use area target as targetting the enemy will cease fire when the enemy starts taking cover from fire. Remember friendly MG and small arms wont injure your own men. Explosives can cause blue on blue. Learn to split your teams up, cause suppression. As you close with the enemy using fire and maneuver turn the mortars off or to another target when or if you plan to storm the enemy position, but still have any MMGs or HMGs use area fire to keep enemy heads down. this works well in my experience. also learn what buildings are cover effective. churches are great especially also the graveyard as well and stone walls arnd it. barns are death traps and Id rather keep my men out in the open than in one. Also dont underestimate the realism unless youre sure - all sorts of stuff is modelled thats not in other games. using a zook or faust in a building? the back blast can kill or injure friendlies. Arty hitting units in forests will cause havoc because treebursts amd associated fragmentation with them.. Im kind of distracted so please if you have specific advice PM me theres just so many things and tangents I could go on. Welcome aboard, its truly an awesome experience and I really miss my online friends and games from here. Id also like to apologize especially to @IanL for how our pbem games lapsed and how utterly patient you were before we had to quit due to my IRL issues. Cheers to you all, hopefully. I can come back soon. unfortunately for now some really bad familial stuff is occupying my life.
  5. i appreciate it man. for once in my life this misfortune was purely fate. cancer is a real motherfu*ker when it strikes your immediate family.
  6. french and brits together would mame an awesome expansion. maybe add a third nation like poland. 2 of those 3 bfc never did and I foresee a modern setting as best. (yes i know abt the allied equipped Poles)
  7. so im back sorta. some very bad personal/familial issues id rather not get into as the emotional... distress is still very recent and real. i apologize to all my pbem opponents i vanished on. im looking to start only one or two pbems pref. BS or FB/BN i do not have 4.0 anyone?
  8. Lmao good catch. What a difference a humble comma makes to some dotard...
  9. Unfortunately I dont think the election of meatheads is going to stop Emrys. Theres so much political disiveness here in the US, South Park put the choice crudely but aptly - turd sandwich or giant douche. I really didnt like either major candidate but certainly less the one in office. I truly dont have the answers to solve this problem Its just clear to me at least that something drastically different has to be done... For all our youngsters Thanks btw sgt
  10. Oh I dont think hes supporting the Kim regime. Of course understanding your enemy is important. The enigma with Kim is whether he.s mad or being very rational. I wouldnt have taken the provocations as far but if I were in his shoes I would have developed nuclear weapons as well. My post was really just delivered from an Americans perspective on something a large amount of Americans feel should never have been our problem. As such I felt it necessary to point out that whilst they may have reasons to hate us the DPRK seriously seriously make it worse for themselces every single time, and unfortunately seem to be the biggest likely catalyst of a WW3 scenario atm And frankly with a 6 year old its hard not to resent the Kim regime for that P.s. Im also pretty sure sburke and emrys know Im well aware of the Americas dirty actions around the globe going back to the USS Maine... And beyond.
  11. Sgt. Sqhead- of course the N Koreans have reason to hate us. However they invaded the South in 1950 not us. They.ve been the provocateurs in countless border raids kidnappings shellings etc. Not to mention assasinations overseas, torture of foreign and domestic prisoners. A gulag archipelago, etc etc etc. The fact of the matter was Im sure we.d be happy to leave well enough alone. Since 1953 there were long periods of inactivity until the Norks started another incident. Whether the Pueblo, the DMZ beheading incident, shelling offshore islands, kidnapping Japanese and S Korean nationals etc. Tell me how you can justify their stance - if they just developed nukes itd be one thing. Yes thered be much crying and wailing but you could make simple nukes and put them on arty shells or make nuke landmines - items just to keep the regime in power. What the DPRK doesnt undeestand is official govt statements that they.ll destroy the US, Australia, Japan, S Korea, etc etc etc coupled with missile launches that violate the territory of their neighbors do nothing but motivate US opinion that "enough is enough" Sad to say but we probably should have gone in in 1994
  12. Well i certainly think that; if a deal struck by one US administration and then sunk by a subsequent one because the new admin. Doesnt like it, it will reflect very badly on the US and how seriously people take the 'word' of America. The whole subject is disturbing. I dont see any way that it wont end up in a bloody war its just now do we have a bloody war today, in 2 wx, etc. Do we choose when it starts or let the DPRK decide? Clearly all the previous efforts to influence almost anything the DPRK does without actual combat are basicaly useless and now it just seems a matter of the DPRK getting nastier weapons and fortifying their position more. I also think that where refrained in both major conflicts with the US from using NBC weapons the Kim regime will use every nasty weapon they have. After all this is the land of the "cleanest race", and where according to North Korean defectors in kindergarten children at the end of the day are exhorted to 'smash the american bastards' and bayonet a paper cutout of some US looking soldier. Whoever is most vicious or bayonets the best or perhaps just goes for the crotch gets the N Korean equivalent of a American kindergarten gold star for the day.
  13. Yea keep em coming Jon i rlly like them
  14. RE: Redfor air ive had success. while i dont often do it i always use only su25s. mi35s/24s are fun just bc my inordinate love of the helo but i dont buy em sometimes i even parse it down to one su25. the original strikes are done on a light setting. they rarely KO abrams but strafing will knock the hell out of abrams subsystems and reliably KO strykers. brads sometimes. then if theyre stil available heavy attacks with bombs and rockets for what are for me secondary targets - inf etc. the su25 preplotted 5 min delay setup attacks once yoy get used to the diatance most enemies will move on average in that amt of time is very effective. the 30mm will shred inf and apcs and the abrams subsystems arw degraded substantially. only thing better to degrade abrams is a tunguska if it gets the drop -of course if theres more than one abrams or apc its toast but ive literally stunned abrams by amt of hits into just sitting there getting slammed by 30mm. best way to do that is keyhole ur tunguska p.s. agree with the others. air is very iffy. arty is better 90 percent of the time. that money would go way better to some abrams which are perfect offense or defensive. or jav teams a couple of snipers anoyhet arty module and couple of 50cal hmgs. also maybe bump up some troops to vet or more eg snipers fos and tanks
  15. rereading it i retrsct that its sound advice @Erwin ty and apologies
