Figured someone had!
what was the damage message?
like you said, gotta love the detail in this game. Simply amazing.

Just curious if anyone has taken out a panther from the front via the shot trap (obviously a panther without the 'chin').
The data screen for the Panther indicates there's a shot trap, and theoretically a round could ricochet off the mantle into the thin top armor, but I was wondering if anyone actually has seen this (either in the Demo or the full release)? how common was this in real life? Obviously it happened once in a while (hence the fix on the G model)...
Sooner or later, with all of us playing, one of us should get a top armor pentration message. All I manage to do is wipe out a machine gun, or the main gun (once).
or would we even get a message for this?
just curious, and an attempt to have a topic that doesnt involve "I got my CM!" (I havent yet, but had some CC problems so it should be on it's way. Had to sneak that in...)
thanks!

I noticed in VoT that the Panther has a shot trap (ie, no chin extension on the front mantle), so theoretically there's a chance a shot could richochet off the turret and penetrate the top armor.
After bouncing numerous shots off it myself, all I've been able to do is damage the machine guns.
Anyone have this happen? I figure it has to happen sooner or later

Besides, most of us have been waiting years for this to come out.
I've been waiting for a game like this since I first sat down in front of a TRS-80 and Apple II oh so long ago.
What's another couple of days?

Chris,
I used to work at Spectrum, worked on DS-1.
dont recognize your last name though, but I left there about 2-3 years ago. Right before we launched DS-1.
small world. I'm an aero by trade, mechanical and now systems by experience...

GP,
yep, just down the road. My wife almost went to work at MC.
we build/launch missiles here. Just got through launching one last month, and back in time for the game to come. I thought for sure it was going to be released a few months ago when I had to go the field for a while. I was probably one of the few here who wasnt disappointed it was being delayed a few months!
With luck it will be at the house when I get home tonite.
will let ya know. should be soon. And if it doesnt come tonite, hopefully tomorrow. I've waited over 2-3 years, another few days wont kill me.

Chris,
I'm in ahwatukee, just west of I-10 on Chandler blvd...
been lurking for what feels like years here, and went away on business for a few months. Came back to a new forum, and this 'junior member' thing. Guess i need to keep up these mindless posts for a while...

actually, a bit humid today - the monsoon is making an early appearance here in Phoenix.
Hmm, wonder if my copy is waiting in the mailbox? only another 3 hours of work until I can go check...

I've had a few instances in the GD where I was sneaking up to kill a Sherman (VoT), and the darn PS team decided to fire on a MG team in a different direction. Kinda lost the element of surprise....
needless to say, they didnt get a shot off at the Sherman once the sherman figured out where they were. All that sneaking around wasted. Not to mention their lives. Rats.
But, other cases they ignored the infantry and fired off round after round at the tanks, sometimes even managing to knock them out.
Seems to me to be some of the randomness and oddness of war, that's all. I wouldnt change it....

yeah, they work good for about 5 seconds or so, then the noise and feeback grow in intensity until being a bit distracting.
I'll have a chance tomorrow to look through the sounds as well, and see if I can see anything odd. Not likely, but another set of eyeballs helps sometimes.
Did you get the noise from the original conversion (ie, before the VISE application)? Could the sounds be mapped wrong for the game?
Oh, just FYI:
Mac G3 (beige 233), OS 9.0.
thanks

MuaHaHaHa,
I updated the sound files, and when playing there is a lot of noise and feedback - during the movie playback only. Switched back to my original sound files and I dont get the noise, etc. I used the updater again but same thing happens.
what I can hear sounds good, but the feedback is rather bad, and washes out everything else. Not sure what caused it, but thought you would like to know.
G4A, If you dont mind I wouldnt mind seeing the script to see what you did. Interested in learning more about this so any help/assistance is appreciated. Feel free to email me if you want to.
thanks

CCJ,
does that mean you arent going to mod the sounds for the full game?

Thanks for converting them! Have you seen the Mac Mods thread in the CM-tips and techniques forum? We're working on converting the graphics as well, and you may be able to help out.
Well, I'm not really doing much, just offered to help in converting them over. There were some questions regarding VISE that you may be able to help us with. Definately need to get the mods for us mac users!
thanks again! I'll be installing the files soon and will let you know how they work.
thanks again

If you need to do the graphics / sounds manually, I can lend a hand.
sounds are definately more work. Sure hope that applescript works out. If not, hopefully a few of us can split up the work?
let me know if you need seomeone to help cut and paste...
thanks!

KT in the foreground isnt a Porsche turret?
Is that it Steve?
-
I've experienced this a few times myself - reloading didnt help, and it was frustrating to watch two of my hellcats freeze in place, just waiting for AP to blow them to smithereens.
FWIW, I use a mac as well. Has happened with LD, and CE, both PBEM.

from what I read on Yahoo, they're going to do a TV miniseries (for cable tv) called:
Band of Brothers
sounds like it's based on Ambrose's book of the same name
they're producing it, not sure if Tom Hanks is starring in it. Scheduled to film next year for a 2001 air date.

Fionn,
just wanted to express my gratitude for compiling the list of *family* names for possible inclusion in the game. So the spelling of our names is a little off the 'perceived' spelling or expected spelling. Live with it. What's the use of having our family names in the game if we cant point them out to our buddies as we play the game, or identify with them (if the spelling is changed, it's no longer my name. Might as well make up the darn thing then and forego all this cr*p).
I cant believe this is starting again and really hope Steve locks up this thread soon.
lest anyone forget the list is intended only to allow us die hard board readers a chance to see our names in the game, nothing more, nothing less. We supplied the names, Fionn compiled them. BTS has final say on what makes it into the game.
thanks again for your effort Fionn.

Mike,
couldnt find your email address, but it appears our backgrounds in work are similar. Just wondering where you worked on rockets - I'm currently a system Engineer working on rockets (Orbital Sciences Corp), and was previously a mechanical engineer (pointing mechanisms for space station (Honeywell), then deep space spacecraft (Spectrum Astro), then missiles (Orbital)).
just curous, sorry for the off topic post. Feel free to email me at:
thanks

Started out with Tactics, with my dad, then moved on to Panzer Leader and Panzer Blitz with my uncle (dad's brother). Then came the small games from Steve jackson - Ogre, Car Wars, some others I dont remember. Played Ogre way too much though.
(of course, before these games a large number of plastic soldiers (both the large green ones and the smaller, 1/72nd scale, and smaller) met their end. used to take these on our family vacations and create a battlefield on the bed. Annoyed my sister to no end.
In fact, my dad and his best friend once made us a plastic mortar, to better shell our troops: took a 1-2 inch diameter tube (1.5 ft long or so), cut slots in the end for a plug, attached rubber bands to the plug and tube via coat hanger wire), and carved wooden shells for us. Attach tube to wood base, stiff wire for range adjustment (into holes in base to change the angle) Months of fun shelling our soldiers and metal tanks from that!
(email me at aikidorat@yahoo.com if you want more detail design info. I still remember how to make that toy, and it was a blast to play with!)
One day we were visiting my uncle and he had a table piled high with maps and counters - my first introduction to SL. Didnt start playing that until 10 years later though. Moved on to B-17 (ran internet squadron for a couple of years, off and on, before I burned out). Ace of Aces (still play that at lunch once in a while), Up Front (great game, play solitaire a bunch, just to experiment), Patton's Best (ok game), Star Fleet Battles, some others.
Recently played Jutland with a coworker, Rise and fall of the third Reich, Victory in the pacific, London's Burning, and more Up Front. A WWII aircraft card game from AH as well, but the title slips my mind right now
Computer-wise, started on the Apple II+. Strike Fleet, Some third world war series (nukes!), a squad based WWII game mentioned before (forget the title), and way too many others to remember. Spent way too many hours playing those - sure my mom was concerned about me when I was growing up!
On the mac, I've tried most of the games that came out for it (either purchased or demo). Had CC for a while, got frustrated with it and out it went. Panzer General was entertaining for a while but, as usual, I lost interest after a while. Oh, Carriers at war (SSI), most of the SSI games (from civil war to WWII - Total war collection), and a number of space related sims.
Recently: too busy with my full time job and my real career (writing) to play. Trying to get ahead so I can spend many hours playing CM!
been waiting for CM for 2-3 years now (been following it since BSL-days) and chomping at the bit to see the demo!
Whoa, a bit long. Better stop now.

still no joy here in ahwatukee. hopefully tomorrow (Wed).
(I had an issue with the CC, and that may have delayed the shipment a day or two. Did get the card charged sunday, so it should be on it's way.
Unless I gave them the wrong address.... nah, I couldnt have... )
