  1. I visited there back in October...

    http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/thefgmforum/threads/normandy-tour-day-3-british-6th-airborne.21082/

The excellent book I referenced before going was David Howarth's "The 6th of June" later editions was re-titled "Dawn of D-Day"

There is an excellent chapter on Ottways attack on the Merville Battery.

You can either view it or down load a free pdf here:

The British Airdrop starts on page 29.

    Enjoy!

  2. Oh yes, I do agree it would be a major software effort to get CM, or any software, to work with a 3D platform.

Probably be a whole new game start to finish.

And perhaps I misstated that the "future of CM" lies with working with the Rift (or some other 3D platform.)

I know, for one, I will always be playing CM in any dimension ;)

However, although I can't say that I "know" it will, but rather, that in "my opinion" I strongly believe that, how should I put this, the highest selling games, especially with the younger generation, will be in 3D.

This may not be for another 10 years or sooner even but it's coming and I feel it may be closer than we think.

I feel like I sound like a commercial.

  3. I don't know.

I don't think it would take anything away from the game or playing WEGO.

I think if you were able to move down to the level of the turret commander and look around in panoramic 3d or zooming out above the battlefield and seeing the undulating terrain and just moving your head back and forth to see the whole map instead of using the keyboard would be an enhancement.

Perhaps you could just reach out from a height, touch units, and give them voice commands (or the option of bringing up menus).

    Just my opinion.

Of course this is all very much in the future.

(But it's knocking on the door.)

  4. This may have been brought up before but

Why no DShK machine guns or GAZ-AA trucks?

I was a big fan of the DShK's in CM1.

They did a very good job against halftracks and armored cars.

    Edit

    Let me rephrase this.

In the manual under "What's New in Combat Mission : Red Thunder" it says:

    "M1985 Nagant revolver,TT-30 pistol, Model 1891 rifle, STV-40 rifle,

PPSh,PPS-42, and PPS-43 submachine guns, the DP, DPM, Maxim 1910,

    SG43, and DShK machine guns."

Only I do not find a description of the DHsK at the end of the manual describing Soviet Heavy Weapons (only the M1910 and the SG43) and I cannot find one on the Soviet TOE in a Quick Battle either as a Specialist Team or attached to an infantry unit.

    Has anybody used one?

  5. GaJ,

I'm still getting the same issue with the sad confused faces.

The screens look the same except I am now using CM Helper 1.2.3.

And under the opponents tab I now get the Red Thunder Icon.

Under the CM Installations it says Version Not Known for all three games.

    Again, everything else works fine.

I'm just using the one machine.

Let me expand on my issue, or should I say oddity as opposed to an issue, because everything is working fine. I get uploads/downloads and chat in both CMRT and CMBN (the only two games currently playing). It's cleaning the files in the out/in boxes. All is well.

It's just I get those sad face icons next to the CMBN games.

    CMH-1_zps9f60b63c.jpg

I believe it is seeing all three loaded games. Or is there a problem becuase I have CMBN and a ghost "CM Battle For Normandy"?

And thanks for your help GaJ.

  6. Something different is going on than what you think: I can't tell what it is yet.

If you have the two-tone red icon showing, it means "CMH thinks that your opponent is using CMH or H2HH". And this means that CMH thinks that it found a chat file that is not yours.

Have a look at the top of the log. There you will find a comment telling you what your ID is.

Note that you can't use CMH to manage the same game on two of your own computers at the the same time, for this reason. Could this be the explanation: are you trying to play they same game using CMH from two different machines at different times?

(Bazinga! I just had a realisation about how to support players doing this!)

(Edit) Can you click on the CMFI install on the Your Installations pane, do "Edit Install", and make sure that "Installation Root Directory" is pointing to the Documents directory where the Game Files folder is.

That's where that needs to be pointing: it definitely got confusing when CMFI came along and put the Game Files in a different place than the executable. I should maybe change the name of that dialog field to say "The place where the frick'in Game Files are!!"

    :D

And I'm not sure what you mean by the top of the log and the ID.

I go to Options show log window and I don't see any ID.

Is there another log I should be looking at?

  7. Elvis has packed this ad-hoc platoon into a tight grouping.. note the Hetzer coming up behind is moving and obviously is intending to come up on the other side of the Panther... so that should simplify targeting.

Bill, when you say this is it because the SU guns have a shorter arc to cover targeting one unit to the next or does it have to do with the LOS.

In other words does a tighter covered arc give you greater spotting capability?
