  1. I've been running Win2k pro with CM and the only problems I had were with video card/drivers initially and before the Athlon fix came about. Sounds like your problem, but since you don't give details on your system it's hard to offer help. There's also a tech support page here which you could try.
  2. I'd recommend www.motorbooks.com. Zenith books is part of them, and they have quite a nice selection, plus a good catalog they'll send you for free. I treated myself to a few books from them recently, and the delivery was prompt, within a week! and right to my door, beating the idiotic Canada post service - thus saving me GST and the $5 ripoff: Battle of the Bulge - St. Vith Ostfront - Osprey Books Hitler's Lighning War Check the revieews for the last 2 on Amazon. Try and find somewhere that will ship all of these out next day. Regards, Ralph D.
  3. Yes, I seem to remember in Links ... "Looks like I hit the tree Jim?!?" There is a WWII era translation but it escapes me at the moment. Oh god, what was the name of that book? Try the McKinley op, it should help. Regards, Ralph D.
  4. Panzerjaeger means tank hunter, but is also anti-tank. Troops and tracked vehicles alike. Destroyer, or zerstoerer, was commonly referred to as bf110s, ships and such, but damned if I've seen that put to a tracked vehicle. Usually confusion arises between SP AT and SP Arty - hyuck! I'm sure some smart-arse can tell me otherwise. Regards, Ralph D
  5. I'd have to add that, given all the negatives I've heard about BoB from Rowan, that having played the demo, I find it very immersive. I experienced none of the graphics problems other people mention, in fact I find them top notch onced tweaked. A real bonus is that it works flawlessly in with Win2k. I'll certainly be picking it up when it's released, but I recommend trying the demo and judging for yourself. Regards
  6. Eye jest thawd id rays the IQ in this hear thred. U guyz r so fun! Not!
  7. Hi, Just to add my opinion - I like the idea of an optional rarity cost. The idea of these units not showing up on the purchase menu based on a rarity factor is good, but I'd still prefer to see them, but at their vastly inflated costs. But whatever, I think it would lead to more historically accurate quick battles, if used with both players' consent. Regards, Ralph D
  8. Hi, Well well, MS 'fesses up! Just heard about this on the grapevine today. Here's a possible solution to something that's plagued me ever since the gold demo. I get the occasional freezup (about 1x a week now)with CM, even when I put my K7550@700 back to 550. I put the fix in and so far - so good. Here's the link: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q270/7/15.ASP Here's some info from the article, but it requires a regedit, which I won't post here 'cos I'd rather remain blameless: AGP Program May Hang When Using Page Size Extension on Athlon Processor --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe. SYMPTOMS A Windows 2000-based computer may stop responding (hang) when you use an Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) program such as Ziff Davis 3D WinBench 2000. This behavior may occur more frequently depending on the computer's processor, memory, and graphics configuration. This problem is known to occur with Nvidia GeForce 256 and Matrox G400 video adapters on computers with AMD Athlon processors. This issue is not specific to any specific video adapter type. CAUSE Memory that is allocated by the video driver is being corrupted.
  9. Hi, I've found it good practice, for myself at least, to delete the prf file and start a fresh one when ever adding any mods, or changing anything on the system in general - like adding a new card, changing drivers etc. Don't know why, but it's saved me some grief. Who needs to cut into valuable CM time with tedious things like troubleshooting <g>? Regards, Ralph D
  10. Here are a couple of excellent ones that I've found in hardcover (Amazon): British Army Handbook 1939-1945 - George Forty Red Army Handbook 1939-1945 - Steven Zaloga Enjoy, Ralph D.
  11. Hi, I've found temporary relief from the exception error by going through many of the above steps, including RAM swapping, but the crash comes back eventually. But good luck! I recently applied the Win2k Sp1 and thought that might do the trick but crashed at turn 7 of a fresh game. Incidentally, the only other app I've experienced this with is MS Encarta 2000. I've got a complete Watson log covering these crashes if anyone feels like doing some real detective work, but here's the basic gist (just a short extract!)from the most recent CM crash. Luckily I can just boot into Win98 to play CM on this machine, so it's no sweat, but it would be nice to find out what is making this happen. Regards, Ralph D. Here's the Watson extract: Application exception occurred: App: (pid=592) When: 03/08/2000 @ 23:00:30.160 Exception number: c0000005 (access violation) *----> System Information <----* Computer Name: xxxxxxxx User Name: xxxxxx Number of Processors: 1 Processor Type: x86 Family 6 Model 2 Stepping 1 Windows 2000 Version: 5.0 Current Build: 2195 Service Pack: 1 Current Type: Uniprocessor Free Registered Organization: Registered Owner: xxxxxxxxx *----> Task List <----* 0 Idle.exe 8 System.exe ~snip~ ... 1164 RUNDLL32.exe 592 Combat Mission..exe 1088 taskmgr.exe 292 drwtsn32.exe 0 _Total.exe
  12. As someone already said here: "Misery loves company". I have a Win2k Pro machine, but luckily I left Win98 as a dual boot option. I've had all the same graphics problems mentioned above (yes, the <ESC> key temporarily fixes it), but also intermittent freeze-ups - requiring a reset. I delete the prf file, all works well for a while and then the lock-ups return. CM is the only software I have these problems with, but there again it's the only one using D3D. For the time being, I just reboot in 98 for CM. I honestly don't believe this is a problem with anything in CM since it works beatifully with Win98. No glitches at all! Nor is it my system, since again, the same hardware works fine with Win98. When MS finally comes out with SP1 for Win2k, I'll give it another go with CM, but for now Win98 and CM is the only option I have time for. System specs: Athlon 550@700, 192 Mb RAM Guillemot TNT2 16 Mb RAM Pioneer DVD etc... Yes, I have tested without o/c'ing but with the same results. Also, if it bothered the system it would also affect Win98, which it doesn't. Regards, Ralph D. CNE and MCSE (and I'm saying no-so-great things about Win2k!)
  13. Tobruk, I'm just guessing that you're using Win2k but here are a few steps that work for me: 1) Delete the *.prf file and start up CM and OK the video that it chooses. 2)Exit CM after you've done this - this saves the "clean" *prf file. 3)Go back and start with the default settings, adjusting things like more tree density as you go along. 4)Save turns every so often. Don't know why, but slowing my overclocking by 50MHz eliminated the BSODs, and I'll still get the rare freeze up, but this procedure will set everything back on track. Regards, Ralph D.
  14. Hi, CM HAS arrived in Ottawa, at least in Orleans which is on the outskirts. It was delivered right to my (super)mailbox, so no extra charges or having to go to the postoffice. Good thinking on BTS part to ID the package as software worth $5. This avoid a lot of hassles. Now to fire this baby up!!! Regards
  15. I'm not selling anything but I'm using a TNT2 16 Mb (Guillemot Xentor), which is the card that gave birth to the current GEForce and GEForce 2. Anyways, it runs on my system at 1024 x 768, 75MHz, AGP2, and on Windows 2K no less. I can use Madmatt's graphics with low rez grass, and I could never go back to anything but D3D, and this is only with the demo since I'm Canadian and our so-called heritage minister apparently won't let CM past the border since there's not enough CANCON in it! To think that us northerners could be sullied by the influence of our southern neighbours. However could we remain distinct! I'm also an ex-Brit and enjoy a bit of "the lowest form of wit"!. If you can't get this with your card, and you want some great graphics with CM it probably time to upgrade or tweak the hell out of it. I don't believe that the V2 can do higher resolutions as well, if at all. I had a V1 myself, but put it on the kids' PC a while back. Regards, Ralph D
