Arty spotter suppression
Stalins Organ replied to SenorBeef's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
as a Recce Platoon Rifleman I occasionally had cause to call in "nominal" mortar fire. All i remember about it is that you had to provide feedback to the arillery for aiming purposes until you told them to fire for effect - up to that point they weer firing at your direction (left a bit, up a bit, etc), so if you put your head down they wouldn't shoot. -
I get real confused real quick by all the mods that are out - desert, winter, M4A3E8 Mk32** on a Wednesday west of the Rhine or Tuesday if in Italy, etc. Is there an easy means of chopping and changing between them to suit the game parameters?

British TOE. Nobody uses it. Why?
Stalins Organ replied to boy_Recon's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I was under the impression tha the troops of varius nations didn't co-operate all that well at all.....certainly the number of times the NZ division was let down by British armour in the desert was disappointing, and "we" were at least nominally a closely linked nation! -

Clearing Barbed Wire
Stalins Organ replied to Dennis Mkr's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Engineers in CM get to clear minefields in as little as a minute using satchel charges....... now way back when I was an Assault Pioneer we would never have used satchel charges on mines, but we would have on wire........ Of course it also depends on eth type of the wire - low wire is a bitch and needs bangalores or cutters (or tanks!), but high wire is fairly easy to demolish with explosives by putting your charges next to the stakes - without support it is quickly flattened and made much less effective. -

BAR as a squad support weapon.

29er the Bren also fired from an open bolt, but never got a rep for catching dirt - maybe because the resulting opening was on the underside and had a snap-shut cover? The FN_MAG (GPMG or Gymp to the NZ & Brit & aussie armies) also fired from an open bolt using a side-feed belt, but again didn't have a rep for catching dirt. -
Yeah, yeah, yeah......hang on, I'll just make this knife a bit blunter before I rip out my guts......

Case For New Type Of Chain of Command AI
Stalins Organ replied to James's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Whatever CM is, it is most certainly NOT a STRATEGY game! nothing at Bn or lower level even remotely qualifies as strategy! -
Ah well, ther eyou go then, another penetration that hd an effect!!

Remember the Tiger 1 was first built in 1943 - well before 17 pdrs, 85mm's or 76mm's let alone tungsten ammo (although some 17 pdrs were rushed into action on 25pdr mounts because of it, and hte 85mm gun in the T34 and KV85 were also results of it!). At the time it was pretty much invulnerable to everything out there, SU-152's and Sturmoviks excepted!!

250/8 or 251/9 You choose.
Stalins Organ replied to Ricochet's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I've used teh 250 with the 20mm on board & run out of ammo with it - IMO if yo're getting these things shot up then you're not using them properly - they aren't MBT's, they're infantry support! -
Here's an interestign article by a Russian artillery officer about his experiences in the Finnish war: http://history.vif2.ru/atwar/lukinov/lukinov2.htm

Stalins Organ replied to Ricochet's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
How much ammo do they each carry? The 250's weer quite a bit smaller than the 251's, so a limited ammo supply might be animportant factor. -
No they are not. The Gerich gun came out in 3 sized - teh 28/21mm, a 42/35 (?) mm and a 75/55mm. They were purely high velocity AT weapons firing tungsten cored ammo - no HE rounds were ever made for them. Recoiless rifles are low velocity weapons firing HE ammo - their AT round is HEAT (shaped charge, Monroe effect, call it what you will). they are recoilless because the energy of teh shell travelling forwards out of tehmuzzle is offset by the energy of the gas exhausting out the rear of the weapon at very high velocity. Hence they also have a big "back blast" - anyone behind one when it fires is in trouble!

I thought sneaking units were more likely to fire than moving ones??
