  1. Reading "The Guns of War" by George Blackburn a Canadian FOO at the moment.

One day, late 44, as he was with the 2nd Canadian Inf Division moving up thru Belgium/Holland they took a village. Suddenly some recce cars came back thru the village shouting a tank was right behind them. Then thunderous explosions are heard further up the street.

George goes into a house and up the stairs with a company CO IIRC and they spot not a Panzer but an SP gun in some trees systematically levelling all the houses in the row along the street. He tells of his wanting to flee as the HE rounds get closer and closer to the house he's in whilst he waits for the artillery strike he's called to stop a German counter attack backed up by this gun that is just now taking shape.

Lucky for him the arty arrives breaking up the attack and knocking out the gun.

Inspired by this I played a QB and purchased 2 Hummels. It was a German attack on a village and I must say they were great for demolishing buildings housing the defending infantry. I ensured they were a long way from the action and I also tried to suppress the defending infantry with small arms fire. It worked a treat.

  2. In addition to all the above....

Getting the target tanks buttoned up is also very handy when engaging with Faust's and Schreck's. They are alot less likely to see your schreck teams fire if they're buttoned up due to small arms fire. This keeps the AT team alive long enough to get in additional shots...if required.

  3. Just as an example to backup LLF's comments re partisan combat effectiveness....

I'm currently reading "The Guns of War" which is the war time story of a Canadian FOO with 4th Field Arty (25Pndrs).

Anyway they're into Belgium and some local resistance, White Coats, join the Canadians in an infantry attack. At one point there is a comment about how when the German's began to motar the attacking infantry the White Coats all bunched together against a wall and suffered heavy casualties. This was attributed to their lack of training in infantry tactics.

Just one example but valid I think.

As a final note I'd like to also add my vote to see partisan forces in CM2 if possible.

  4. Having core forces to carry thru lots of fights in a 'campaign' is something discussed alot here.

I'm not really that hung up on the idea and don't mind to much not having it. However I was reading a thread WRT CM2 and I had this idea (my one for the year, now I can sit back and relax, hehe).

Basically the idea was to be able to save your units after a battle which can then be used in any other battle as long as it's after the date of the last battle.

So say start with a force and play a quick battle. At the end you're prompted to "Save the survivors". It saves the remnants of the force for you and calculates it's point value rounding up to the smallest unit denomination of that type (ie it fleshes out a squad of men as opposed to counting say just 3 survivors). Prolly wanna exclude fortifications.

So next time your ready to fight and you have the option to purchase units you can purchase this force as part of your point total and then the remaining points as per normal. Then at the end of that fight you can save the force again with what ever is left and so on and so on.

Restrictions could be the force becomes available the month after it's last fight and obviously if you don't have enough points for this particular battle then you can't use it.

    SO, as an example:

June 44, 1000 point US force has a battle and win/lose ends up as a 500 point force.

I next play a QB dated July 44 that lets me have 1500 points. I spend part of those points buying my saved force with the same guys for 500 points and the other 1000 on new stuff. At the end of this fight I've got a force of 1200 points worth left which I save and can use again later in a QB dated August 44 or later and that lets me use at least 1200 points.

Etc, etc every month until May 45. The force could grow huge if you chose successively bigger fights or be allowed to stay small depending on the size/point totals of the engagements you choose to participate in.

Draw backs I can think of off the top of my head would be you can only use the forces in battles that allow you to purchase units. So best might be to play thru an Operation and then use those survivors as a core for lots of subsequent QB's or self created ops.

You could even combine two (or more) smaller forces into one by buying and saving them at the end of a large battle.

Doable? I have no idea but thought I'd share with the group - I hope I've made sense.

  5. No, I do mean the SP IG's...

Taken from the Achtung Panzer! website... http://www.achtungpanzer.com/panzer.htm

    pzjag1_1.jpg

    "Sturmpanzer I Bison (Sd.Kfz.101)

    (15cm sIG33(Sf) auf Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf B)

150mm sIG 33 L/11.4 heavy infantry gun (mortar) carrier operated by the crew of four was built on the chassis of PzKpfw I Ausf B. Crew was protected only by large box-shaped gun shield (made up of three 10mm plates), open at the top and rear. Only 38 were converted in January/February of 1940 by Alkett in Berlin. The gun and superstructure overloaded the chassis leading to poor mobility. The idea behind this vehicle was to provide infantry with direct and mobile fire support unit. Sturmpanzer I saw service in the West, Balkans and Russia with 701-706 sIG(Sf) Kompanien - Heavy Infantry Gun Companies (each had 6 vehicles), originally attached to Panzer Divisions and then Panzer Corps. Last of them were taken out from service (with 704 Company of 5th Panzer Division) in late 1943. It was the first of many self-propelled support vehicles produced during the war."

  6. Thanks for you efforts, I look forward to the mod(s).

Question tho - I would have thought focusing more on the Italian campaign (43-44) would be more appropriate given the unit choices we have....Or have I missed something and you're able to modify unit make up and the vehicle models?

Anyway, still looking forward to it.

    Thanks

  7. Hehe...Horrido!

I must confess that I've yet to do any multiplayer CM...So many games, so little time!

My advice is to get comfortable with it, start small - if you've played the demo then it's a breeze, you'll just have choice crisis with all the units, scenerioes, operations, 240mm rockets, Jagdpanthers and the quick battle generator is fantastic smile.gif

Get the latest patch straight away.

Then grab the graphics mods, BIG DD's are the best too date for terrain and uniforms, also make sure you get winterized vehicles as these aren't included on the CD. Generally the more recent the mod the better it is, the original was good but with the added mods done by players I must say it's beautiful.

There's quite a few WB pukes floating around Vadr, FD-Ski, Buzzer, Pritzl to name a few off the top of my head, do a search we had a thread going here a while back.

The wait for it to arrive sucks, use it to d/l mods, but once it arrives you'll be in WW2 tactical wargame heaven.

  8. If/when possible I'd like to see these 2 added:

1 - The option during Quick Battle generation setup to allow you to view the map before you go to the unit purchase menu - call it recon/aerial pictures etc.

2 - Allow the AI to purchase enemy forces for quick generated operations in the mission editor based on some parameters set during the op creation. Basically would be a like quick battle generation but for ops.
