  1. I knew they were powerful, but Damn!, the Germans I ran into at the far side of the map were regular quality men (at the start), and they were reduced to quivering bowls of jello. I have a bit of respect for anyone who had to take that kind of fire in reality - it must be as close to the Circles of Hell as one can get without walking in.

Me thinks I'll try it again tonight, but in a more urban approach.

What is the range of the AVRE? - Or am I better off using a sexton or priest or Sherm 105?

    Thanks

  2. Last night I played a qb assault versus the AI, and I chose the Allies. Unrestricted everything, computer picked forces for the AI and I picked mine. I took a 14" spotter. Never having used one in the past, I thought it would be fun.

So, I set up, and run my spotter to a good position, keeping the rest of my forces hidden(1 company + 1 platoon infantry, 1 daimler, 1 firefly, 2 greyhounds, 1 crocodile and 1 avre) except for 1 platoon split into teams as a recon screen.

After the spotter gets into position, I sprint the Daimler out towards one of the flanks, and mine field signs start appearing, as well as a "SP Gun?" and a "Tiger?" and some "Gun?"s as well. I have the spotter target the area around the tiger and wait the two minutes as the Daimler gets picked off.

The sptting round levels a building near the target, and the next 4 shells impact near my target point. THe Tiger and SP Gun? are listed as abandoned, and the craters are HUGE!

I take the spotter and move target point towards the other bigger victory flag area and let it rip. 2 minutes later, the area is on fire and covered with craters.

I sprint the greyhounds forward, followed by the Croc and AVRE. THe Croc takes out a few guns as it advances (How come I can't get the AVRE to fire?), and then there is silence. I start to advance the infantry company with the Firefly in overwatch. They advance running into practically no resistance until the far edge of the map, where they run into the remains of some broken infantry squads.

It turns out that the Tiger was a Tiger, and the SP Gun? was actually 2 StuG IIIG's, and there were also 3 half tracks behind the Tiger hidden from my view, and they were all KO'd by the naval fire.

The devastation from 10 shells was unbelievable. Has anyone faced the naval bombardment and still been able to fight?

  3. Ash,

The easiest way is actually to get down to camera level 1, and scope out the ground for good ditches, bumps, etc. It's easy with the German TD's to get behind a small rise, and then use the hunt command to move up the rise. The AI will automatically stop the TD in a hulldown position as soon as enough of the vehicle clears the hill for the gun to fire. It works well, especially with the Hetzer and Jpz IV's.

  4. Pale,

What you may be forgetting is that if you think it is a great place for an observer, chances are your human opponent will think so too, and consequently will rain steel upon it.

One of the biggest differences between playing a human versus playing the AI is that a human will shell any spot they think appears to be a good hiding place, or ambush spot, etc., while I have not seen the AI shell an area that they aren't sure contains the enemy.

Good luck, CMBO only gets better.

  5. LD,

I am also amazed at the damage that a perfectly placed 150mm infantry gun can do. The first battle that the computer gave me one in a qb, it took out over 200 british infantry men versus 1 crew member before the brits surrendered. I know it had to be the IG causing all the casualties, as the volksgrenadiers accounted for only 30 of the 250+ casualties caused. I stress the "perfectly placed" part, however, as the 150mm IG can get taken out by schoolchildren throwing spitballs if the placement is less than ideal. Therefore, I agree with Andreas, and do not believe it is deserving of the "uber-weapon" moniker.

  6. Henri,

Please e-mail me the name of this character as well. I haven't played any TCP/IP games yet, and I want to make sure that this person will not be one of the ones I play in the future.

    Thanks
