  1. sorry for my ENGLISH

In CMBN & CMFI,when a soldier who get in a truck or M3(etc) was hit by weapon, his Dead(Wounded)body disapear with a red cross.

But in the NEW CMRT video,I saw a tankrider fall down from T3485 with a Dead(Wounded)body left on the ground.Amazing!

Does it means that soldiers who get in a truck or ride on the tank will left Dead(Wounded)body on the ground in CM3.0 Engine?

If it is true ,such a wonderful thing !

I saw this in the Twitchtv video ChrisND put up when he played the "Tankovyi Desant" scenario. He had some tank riders ride straight up the middle on a T34/85 to see what would happen. It was surprising to see a body fall off and lay end up on the ground when they started to take casualties.

But I dont see why this would happen in a truck...unless they get hit by a very large HE shell and bodies go flying everywhere. :)

  2. Thanks Chris! That was fun! I enjoyed watching the "Titan Fall" beta as well.

"Optional graphical Command and Control link tracing"

What does it mean ? The old red/black C2 lines from cm1 ? could not see that yesterday on twitch ?! Chris can you give us information about those ?

I was looking for this too. I'd like to see it in action.

  3. Hmmm. One militaristic dictator killed millions. The other militaristic dictator killed tens of millions. One spoke German and the other Russian. Now granted the German dictator wanted to expand territory for "living space" while the other just wanted a buffer from future invasions.

Damned if you do, damned if you do.

Unfortunately, any organization is only as good as it's leadership.

Every time I learn anything about history I am always thankful I live in the time and place I live in now.

  4. Gotta love crazy ivan. :P

I also agree in thinking that running that HQ unit out there to run a fire mission is maybe not a good idea. IME running units around on the map just tends to get them killed quick like. IF they can get there unspotted it may pay off but it's a big gamble for what he is hoping to accomplish imo. Course that's easy for me to say since I'm not playing some other guy for the whole interweb world to see and backseat drive on.

    He's braver than me. :)

Oh man... That looks like exactly like something I would have done back in my CMBO days when I was novice at all of this (now just less so. ;) ) Unless the terrain will hide his HQ Platoon as it moves over that road/open area, they are going to die. Bill has a lot of assets over there. He is being too impatient IMHO.

  5. Thanks guys!

Honestly, I think way too many people in the West are still suffering the lingering effects of Cold War propaganda in their perception of Soviet tactics and capabilities. The Red Army was not just faceless hordes completely lacking in initiative.

Understood. Personally I've been around this place far too long to fall prey to that. :D But it did occur to me they had to be doing something right to make all the way back from Moscow to Berlin despite their willingness to take big losses. Even Communists can learn from their mistakes. ;)

  6. I have a question about Soviet tactics I thought I'd better ask here because it involves Bill's technique and recon. And I dont want to spend $20 on the book. :)

But the whole idea about "Soviet tactics" has me questioning if they do recon like Bill is doing.

Is there any attempt at self preservation at the Company/Battalion level or is it just "go" straight from Point A to the objective as the crow flies and (attempt to) destroy everything in their (The Company/Battalion etc) path?

  7. Actually, since I have been playtesting this thing, controlling a Soviet Battalion is quite manageable, as long as you dont split the squads (which is the only proper way to play as Soviets anyway :)).

Do the squads tend to still run in a column thus increasing their chance for one MG burst to nearly take out the whole column? That's the only reason why I split squads; so that my troops don't die in bunches. I hate splitting my troops. Its too much work but it is necessary.

  8. I find this thread interesting. The Soviet style of combat just might play into my hands...not that I am proud of that. :D

I have a couple of questions.

Here's some examples of how this relates in CM terms. Imagine yourself as the Soviet commander of an assault on German positions. The Germans have a decent in depth defense backed by the usual combined arms support units. You are in command of a battalion sized force with a battalion of tanks (21 in total). Plenty of artillery and mortars too.

You'd first figure out where the enemy units are. If the scenario author is doing this correctly, Soviets should have a pre battle intel bonus since they would know this sort of thing in real life.

Artillery would be tasked to destroy the forward most German positions, suppress/destroy support weapons, and harass anything to the rear. As the battle progresses artillery is shifted to support weapons using Regimental and lower artillery assets (mortars and 76mm guns).

One company would be sent against the German trenches en mass. Their goal is to take the trenches, that's it. There is nothing in the game that prevents you from doing more, but here's why you do NOT want to plan on doing more:

    Casualties

You need to assume that your first company is going to get shot up very badly in the process of taking the trenches. If you plan on using them for something else then your plan is likely to fail. So plan on them taking the trenches, but nothing more.

Second company is there as a backup for the first company in the event it can't break through. However, the primary goal for the second company is to open up a corridor through the German lines to something far back at the other end of the map. Depending on the scenario designer it could be a land feature (like a hill or a village) or it could be the map edge. Whatever it is, second company should be tasked with making sure this route is open. Again, like the first company... losses are to be expected and accepted.

If you have any artillery left, at this point it should be focused on breaking up any counter attacks and/or shifted deeper into the German defenses.

Third company is there as a backup for second company. However, it's main task is to reinforce the first company to make sure the corridor is secure and that German stragglers/counter attacks don't threaten it.

Depending on terrain conditions you would likely want some amount of your tanks to be allocated to one or more of these attacks. Probably a company of tanks with 2nd rifle company, but perhaps it should be with 1st rifle company. Again, that's more an issue of how much good you think the tanks can do. And again, you should plan on losing them so that you don't rely upon them for more than this.

Once 3rd rifle company is in place then the balance of your tanks should go straight through to the objective on the far side of the map. Anything that gets in their way should be engaged only to the extent that is necessary.

    Steve

Does this mean that during scenarios or campaigns we will not see force preservation (Friendly condition %) as a requirement to meet victory conditions?

Im still trying to understand how the limitation is felt if the designated Company that takes the trenches but continues on to fight and advance. Is there something that happens "under the hood" when the objective is taken and the Company that first touches/occupies that objective? Or is just assumed that this Company is going to take enough losses that they will be combat ineffective and it will be pointless to use them further?

  9. Nope. What it means is that the RoF varies more depending on circumstances and (I think) a bit randomly. For example, "final defensive fire" should be higher. I haven't tested it myself so I can't say exactly what you'll notice.

    Steve

Ah, so this has to do with the mental disposition of the squad/platoon? "Nervous" squads/platoons that are "Green" tend to be a bit more trigger happy?

Or do you mean it depends on if the squad/platoon are on the attack or a defensive disposition (combined with mental state)?

  10. I always just assumed you could not area target or call in arty through trees on the side of a slope, hill, mountain, what have you, because there is no LOS to the ground. But I could understand why someone would come away incredulous that this is so. Its seems so simple to be able to do that in real life. I chalk it up to engine limitations. But, yes, whatever the case may be, not being able to get LOS through trees to call in artillery or CAS to the side of a hill definitely has GOT TO GO. ;)

  11. BF have said (I think!) in threads like the Panther shot trap still not trapping, and half track gunners, that once a round is fired the outcome is purely down to "ballistics".

You may be wasting time and ammo on an empty AS; or you may hit and kill a team, say, without ever knowing it unless and until you get LOS to the AS in question and find the bodies.

But if the engine is tracking and computing results for every round fired, wherever it goes, why can't we just fire and see - or not see! - what happens?

That was the thought process that led me to wonder if it is because the computations require a known impact point at the moment of firing (though that might not be the point aimed at, as rounds do miss, as I know to my cost ...).

So, a round cannot just be fired off into the distance because there is currently no computation of what might happen to it: the round's impact point - and effect - is worked out at the moment it is fired, and that effect can be known only in an AS with LOS?

As I said first time, that may be a surmise or two too far; but it seemed to me to provide one answer as to why this works the way it does now.

Let me take a crack at your question. Maybe it will steer the discussion in the right direction.

The short version, as I understand it, is that the Combat Mission x2 (CMSF, CM:Afghanistan, CMBN, CMFI) engine has it's own physics rules, and not just a bunch of tables with expected outcomes ("if this, then this" programing...I probably know enough of programing to get myself into deep trouble).

LOS is not tied directly to ballistics.

There is a whole lengthy discussion archived out there somewhere before CMBN published about the 'engineering', so to speak, of the engine.

If you notice, speed of sound is even modeled. You will hear an explosion with a longer delay after impact if you are 1000m away when compared to only 100m away. FYI :)

  12. Quick question (I don't know if I'm being a little dim or not here)

I pre-ordered Combat Mission Battle For Normandy back in 2011 (The hard case edition) and currently I have all of the modules (CW and MG). My question is will there be another western front expansion to fill the last disk slot in my case? Or is the new Eastern Front game going to do that?

Yes. There is a "pack" expected. MG is the last in this series. But there will be a "pack" with random stuff and not necessarily specific to MG or Normandy.

Here is a link which breifly discusses it.

There are discussions at length around here some where which is a road map. I'll let you find that. :P

  13. Do Russian war movies have the same hackneyed stereotypes? You know, farm boy, Brooklyn, true heart Indian, and the father figure NCO/Captain, and the unblooded Looie who dies to atone for his earlier mistakes?

What would they have? The Muscovite, streetwise and arrogant. The Ukrainian wheat farm boy, wide eyed and innocent. The scamming Georgian, always scheming and trading. The Uzbeck, who listens to the ground and states, "3 Tigers to the West. They approach with hate in their hearts. We have 10 minutes." The Komsomol recruit who keeps looking to his pocket guide as if that will tell him what to do while under direct machinegun fire. And the Commissar, waving his pistol about, foam and spittle flying, who dies while gloriously taking out the Tiger tank and saving the men who hated him.

    Just wondering...

I took all that as a given. But all fair questions.

On another note, there is 9 Company (Company 9?) set in Afghanistan, where only one person survives.

  14. Thank you for putting this out there. I played the last scenario in the Nijmegan campaign this weekend and finally noticed what you just pointed out. It seemed odd to me that my Sherman could not area fire on a building that was clearly in LOS. There were no trees, no smoke, no dust, no walls. There was nothing in the way. It was the exact same picture as above (I thought it was the same scenario at first until I saw the PzIII). However when a target of opportunity made itself seen in the window my Sherman would immediately shoot at it.

    Not good.
