Windows ME Catastrophe

Recommended Posts

I recently committed the idiocy of buying and installing Windows ME. Since then mucho problems with CM, namely: lockups and graphical corruptions like dropouts- white or black inch square chunks or text fragments from the menu. My other programs run more or less OK. Any ideas?

My system:

PII350

128 Ram

Diamond Stealth540 32mb (latest W98 drivers)

Intellimouse Explorer (hmmmm...)

CM 1.05

BTW, these problems were also coterminous with installation of Techware graphic mods.

I have no problem with Windows ME, however first thing to check is the version of your video driver. It may not be the latest. Try that first, then make sure you also don't have any special mouse cursors. Let me know if this helps...

I know you said you had the latest Windows 98 drivers, but Windows ME may have over-written them.

I believe (though I'm not sure) that the Diamond S540 is based on the Savage 4 chipset. If so, then there is a newer reference driver for Win9x (which supposedly should work under Windows ME). The problem with using the Reference driver (other than it may not work) is that you will lose your Diamond control panels (which will be replaced with S3 Savage 4 control panels).

Savage 4 Reference driver (v. 8.20.29,8-22-00) go to Savage 4 section:

Diamond S540 Driver (v. 8.20.16,5-2-00):

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much info on WindowsME compatibility. Since S3 sold off (or are in the process of selling off) their video chip and video card business to VIA, etc. there probably won't be much forthcoming from them.

Rune, you were right. On re-installing Intellimouse Explorer Windows defaulted to one of the custom cursors. God knows why.

Thanx for the help.
