3D Models/Textures Settings

Recommended Posts

With the best settings you get the "main" 3D model and texture.

However as the models are further away from the camera, LODs(Level of Detail) kick in. These are the same 3D models but with much less polygons/details. Since the models are further away you don´t need so many details. There are usually from 2 to 6 LOD models for each object.

With the other quality settings what happens is you get the next LOD even at close view. Since they have less polygons/resolution this results in faster FPS.

So it works like this - (distances for example only):

Best:

10 feet = Main model

10 yards = LOD1

50 yards = LOD2

100 yards = LOD3

150 yards and beyond = LOD4

Better:

10 feet = LOD1

10 yards = LOD2

50 yards = LOD3

100 yards and beyond = LOD4

Improved:

10 feet = LOD2

10 yards = LOD3

50 yards and beyond = LOD4

Is that correct?

Roughly yes.

However if the system is low on resources it will use the lower res LODs regardless of distance. So, for instance, if you have just two tanks in the scene your example is correct. If you have 30 tanks then LOD2 might kick in at less than 10 feet.

Thanks for the info. I have some investigating to do.
