Jonny(FGM)
Ok so I bough NATO and am now on 1.30. Started a game in 1.21 now I'm struggling to resume it. Somebody mentioned that I needed to open the PBEM file in 1.21 then save it as a save game file then load it up in 1.30. I got somebody on here to do that for me (thankyou whoever it was, forgotten now lol) but that file still didn't work. Tried it in my incoming email and saved game folder and in both ones it just crashes to desktop after about 75% loading. Am i doing something wrong or is it just not possible to continue a PBEM game started in an earlier version?
MeatEtr
You can continue campaigns when the save game is in between battles. But PBEMs that aren't campaigns are mid-game and cannot be continued.

Jonny(FGM)
Care to enlighten me on how to do it? : )
MeatEtr
This is not true. I just played a 1.21 game in 1.30 Well surprisingly the 1.30 stand alone patch is still not out yet. But I'd be willing to bet the save game compatibility will be similar if not identical with the previous patch notes. But yes there are occasions that it does work, but not all the time and weird things can happen. So the official word from the readme is what follows: PREVIOUS SAVE GAME COMPATIBILITY NOTE: NOTE: Save games from v1.20 ARE COMPATIBLE with v1.21, provided that you save your turn-based games in the COMMAND phase (not the replay phase) before upgrading to v1.21. If you are upgrading from an earlier version than 1.20, e.g. 1.10 or 1.11, then save games from these versions are NOT compatible with 1.21. In this case, we recommend you backup your existing "CM Shock Force.exe" file before continuing with this install by renaming the file to something like "CM Shock Force old.exe". You can still launch the game with that renamed exe and finish your previous in-progress battles. Using that old exe however, you will not have access to all the new features of v1.21. Once you have finished your old games, you should delete that old exe file.

IIRC this is a first for the save game compatibility working with the previous update.
Jonny(FGM)
Hmm so It should be working, anyone any ideas why mine isn't? could it be that because I got somebody else to save it in 1.21 it could be a licence issue?

Jonny(FGM)
Thanks : ) There's no real rush, my opp is waiting for the 1.30 patch anyway as he's not going to get NATO
jnt62006
Does anyone know if its possible to start a PBEM game in 1.3 and play an opponent using 1.21? Or vice versa?
hoolaman
Hmm looks like ive gotta buy a fresh copy of CMSF then, damn you BF punishing me for my over eagerness to get NATO lol I'm sure that one license on one computer will work for multiple installs. It is the unique hardware that eats the license, not a second or third game install. So anyone having compatibility issues can just install a 1.21 version in a different game directory. Shrullenhaft posted a suggested way of just using the old exe recently, but I know from juggling multiple beta installs that it is best to keep one good vanilla install and mess around with a second. Obviously this will only be a problem until the 1.30 standalone patch, so after everyone is patched up you could delete the extra copy.
