Serial Connection

Recommended Posts

No. There isn't any particular support for direct serial-to-serial connections. Though I believe Windows has support for 'Direct Connections' that utilize parallel or serial ports with TCP/IP as the communication protocol. I haven't really bothered setting up one of these myself, so I don't know all of the details. You may be able to add a 'network device' that is the Direct Connection and use TCP/IP as the protocol. This should work with CM (though it won't be all that fast, especially with large movie files).

Decent network cards can be purchased inexpensively now for most plaforms. You could put one in each computer with a 'crossover' cable connecting them and get much better speed than a serial connection (10 - 100Mbps compared to a max serial speed of 115,000bps).

Go to this link and you should get all the info you need to set up a Windows Direct Cable Connection - Parallel Technologies Direct Cable Connection

I used the instructions and set up a Win95 to WinXP connection to play CMBO and Silent Hunter II/Destroyer Command. I also set up a WinXP to Win2000 connection, I'll be trying CMBB this weekend as well as SHII/DC on this connection this weekend. The transfer speed is 4Mbs.
