dieseltaylor
Ok the layout did not work. But jumbled up their are the menus for Franch primary school kids - from here http://www.mairie4.paris.fr/mairie4/jsp/site/Portal.jsp?page_id=86 I find it quite inspiring that good range of food can be had - and that it gets kids used to food as something special.
Affentitten
Well, it's written in French, so it looks fancy. But "Pain blanc et beurre" is bread and butter in anyone's language. And "Purée aux trois légumes" is low grade boiled veggies mashed into a paste. The thing is, you could describe even a hospital menu with that degree of flair, but what turns up on your tray will still probably taste like crap. I know from very recent experience at my nieces' junior high school in Le Mans that the same centralised industrial kitchen does all the food for the district's schools, hospitals...and prisons.

And "Purée aux trois légumes" is low grade boiled veggies mashed into a paste. Well thanks for choosing the easy ones to translate .... no credit for the turkey with honey, the veal with rosemary, eggs florentine etc etc. Come on that is a pretty classy menu. Are those two sentences in the same paragraph for a reason or just using juxtaposition to suggest that the massed produced food must be crap? My father enjoyed the hospital food when in France but then he was in Brittany. I would not wish to extrapolate from a single instance to a generalisation I fully understand that a menu may promise more than it delivers !
costard
The pork and plums sounds pretty good. Veal, saffron rice - the salads look great. I'm not so sure about "gratin de colon" tho'.
Affentitten
Quite obviously there is going to be more of a focus on the menu in France than there is in Britain and there is far less tolerance for processed food products. No French parent is going to be happy with their kid eating chips and baked beans every single day. But.... Funnily enough, I bet if an English school put chocolate sandwiches on the menu there would be a parental uproar too.
Bugged
Funnily enough, I bet if an English school put chocolate sandwiches on the menu there would be a parental uproar too. Not necessarily, not if it's heavily marketed as a healthy meal option. Lately, I've seen far too many ads trying to convince me that Nutella is a healthy breakfast when thickly spread across two slices of bread. Pfft, yeah right. "...the main ingredients of Nutella are sugar and modified vegetable oils, followed by hazelnut, cocoa and skimmed milk." Some people will fall for the advertising, though.
Michael Emrys
I bought a jar of Nutella once on the basis of the raves I had heard about it on this board. I should have known better. I made a sandwich. It was pretty awful. I held off trying it again because of the memory of the first time. Then I mentally shrugged that maybe I had just eaten it on a bad day and owed it to the product to give it a second chance. I didn't even finish the second sandwich. It was...truly awful. My conclusion is that people who like this stuff would probably love dog poo. They'd save a lot of money too. Michael
dieseltaylor
So its medicinal!! In Italy In its home country of Italy, Nutella has become a cultural and social phenomenon. Many books have been written about it, and it is the core of a celebrated scene in the movie Bianca, by the Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti, in which a character relieves his post-coital anxieties by eating chocolate coated bread, spread from a gigantic Nutella jar. In France In France, Nutella is the most popular spread. It represents 89% of the market share. Ferrero's factory in Villers-Écalles is the world largest producer of Nutella with about 70,000 tons per year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutella
Michael Emrys
In France, Nutella is the most popular spread. Well after all, what can you say for people who eat snails and various other obscenities? Michael
Affentitten
I thought you'd like Nutella, Emrys. I mean, you don't need teeth to eat it.
