duenorth
I love my new computer but I can't play combat Mission on it. Please Help. The game will load fine, but I can't read any of the text in the text boxes. For example when I click on GO a black box is displayed but no text is there. I have tried the latest ATI drivers on my computer. No go. I am using CM 1.05. Is there another patch I don't know about? Thanks Joel

Schrullenhaft
duenorth - When you installed the latest drivers were they from Apple or were they the Universal Installer from ATI ? If you're running OS 9.0.x then the drivers that are available with that OS are apparently the latest. If you're running something earlier then you may want to try the ATI drivers. If you do use the ATI drivers I would suggest performing an uninstall first. This may (or may not) remove the current ATI extensions, etc. Before doing this make sure you have your OS CD handy in case you want to install your previous drivers. Now install the drivers and see if this improves anything. The dialog box that is blank for you says "Computer Player Thinking" and shows a progress bar underneath it (which is light green on my PC).

Schrullenhaft
duenorth - when you "tried" the latest ATI drivers, where did you get them ? If you've used the ATI Installer then I would suggest uninstalling the drivers and installing the set off of your 9.0.4 OS CD. I'm not sure if they are different names for some of the extensions between these two, if so then uninstalling the previous set should hopefully remove the unnecessary drivers/extensions.
duenorth
I went back to the drivers that came on my 9.0.4 CD. The above listed system profile is with the 9.0.4 Cd ATI drivers.
Schrullenhaft
I'm going to have to default to someone who actually is running similar hardware to you and see if they have the same problem. The last question is: Have you, at any time, installed a version of the ATI drivers other than what came with the 9.0.4 OS. There's a slight possibility that one of the extensions is mismatched/older than the rest of the software, but beyond that I'm not sure what to say at this point. You may want to run System Updater and see if there is anything new for you system. The last thing to try (and you'll want to backup your PBEMs, downloaded scenarios and any mods) is to wipe out CM and reinstall it, but I'd doubt that this will fix your problem. gibsonm
Joel, I have encountered exactly the same issue (have a look at my thread): http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/Forum8/HTML/000452.html What I'm going to try in order is: Disable the ATI Driver update extension. Install Apple Sprockets 1.7.5 Install Multi Media Update 1.0 I'll post another response detailing how it goes. ------------------ Regards, Mark:-{) Anxiously awaiting the G4 PowerBook [This message has been edited by gibsonm (edited 08-31-2000).] [This message has been edited by gibsonm (edited 08-31-2000).]
elementalwarre
this is an ATI bug. ATI knows about it. i'm sure because i'm the one who reported it to ATI best workaround for now is disable the ATI driver update
Guest Big Time Software
FYI guys - we think this is an ATI driver bug. We've reported it to ATI and they're looking in to it. I'll let you know how it goes. Charles
gibsonm
Joel et al, Here is what I found Installed Apple GameSprockets 1.7.5 - no change (i.e. no text displayed). Tried Multi Media Update 1.0 but couldn't install as all currently installed extensions were later versions than those in the update (considering it is dated June - before these iMacs came out - its understandable). I then tried disabling some extensions (dragged onto desktop, restarted then launch CM) one at a time. ATI 3D Accelerator (ver 5.0) - no change ATI Driver Update (ver 1.5.5) - CM wouldn't start (error initialising 3D graphics) ATI Graphics Accelerator (ver 5.1.1) - no change ATI Rage128 3D Accelerator (ver 5.8.8) - Text boxes were displayed but game only runs at 640 x 480, thousands of colours and buildings that are occupied loose their rooves. ATI Video Accelerator (ver 4.5.6) - no change. Hopefully the guys/gals at ATI come up with a patch soon for the current crop of iMacs (I wonder if the cube has this problem?). ------------------ Regards, Mark:-{) Anxiously awaiting the G4 PowerBook
Buckeye
This is very curious. I run CM just fine on my iMac DV SE. Here are the version numbers of my ATI files: ATI 3D 4.9.7 ATI driver update 1.5.3 ATI graphics accel 4.9.4 ATI MPP manager 1.2f1 ATI Rage 128 3D accel 5.8.1 ATI resource manager 2.4.8 ATI video accel 4.4.7 If anyone thinks that using one of these files would be helpful, I'd be glad to e-mail it along. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! gibsonm
Buckeye, Please do, except I think the ATI chip on the new iMacs (with the optical mouse - no puck) probably need the drivers already installed. The last time I played with using different versions the DVD software went "belly up". I'm happy to give it a go though. ------------------ Regards, Mark:-{) Anxiously awaiting the G4 PowerBook
Buckeye
Okay, I'll send 'em along. You're right, though, it could a bug in the particular chip set, rather than the software. I'd love to know if people run into the same problem with the G4 cube (if so, I won't be in such a hurry to buy one!). ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! Antonio
Hi there, I've got the G4 cube and I'm have the exact same problems. No white text appears in the game at all. This is very frustrating. What to do?
Buckeye
Hey gibsonm, did you receive the e-mail with the ATI software? If so, did it work? Antonio, that's very disconcerting to hear. It sounds like it has something to do either with the ATI chipset or the software. I'd like to hear from gibsonm whether the software versions I sent him make any difference. Everything works fine on my iMac DV SE, but I'm not sure if it's because of the chipset or the software. I'd be glad to send you the software if it works for gibsonm. ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! gibsonm
Buckeye, Yes got the email. This weekend will be the first chance I have to try it (combination of free time and the iMac will be available). I will tell you how i get on. ------------------ Regards, Mark:-{) Anxiously awaiting the G4 PowerBook
Buckeye
Okay, thanks for letting me know. I hope it works, although I suspect it may be the chipset itself that's the problem. Good luck! ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! You're a stinkin' Mac user!"
kpedraja
Hi, Just got a new G4 and I'm experiencing a the same invisible text problem. Sadly I just got my copy of Combat Mission. FYI, I tried reverting to an earlier version of Draw Sprocket (1.7.3) to no avail.
gibsonm
Buckeye, et al The short answer is that the older software didn't improve things and indeed continued to disable the DVD. The long answer is: 1. Use all old software: Game fails to load. 2. Current ATI driver Update and all other old files (text displayed, 640 x 480, no rooves). 3. Current ATI driver Update, current Rage 128 3D accelerator and all other old files (text displayed, 640 x 480, no rooves). 4. Current ATI driver Update, current Rage 128 3D accelerator, current ATI 3d Accelerator and all other old files (text displayed, 640 x 480, no rooves). 5. Current ATI driver Update, current Rage 128 3D accelerator, current ATI 3d Accelerator current ATI Graphics Accelerator and all other old files (text displayed, 640 x 480, no rooves). 6. Current ATI driver Update, current Rage 128 3D accelerator, current ATI 3d Accelerator current ATI Graphics Accelerator, current MPP manager and all other old files (text displayed, 640 x 480, no rooves). 7. Current ATI driver Update, current Rage 128 3D accelerator, current ATI 3d Accelerator current ATI Graphics Accelerator, current MPP manager, current Resource Manager and old ATI Video accelerator (no text displayed, 1024 x 768, rooves). 8. Current ATI driver Update, current Rage 128 3D accelerator, current ATI 3d Accelerator current ATI Graphics Accelerator, current MPP manager, current ATI Video accelerator and old Resource Manager (text displayed, 640 x 480, no rooves). 9. All current (no text displayed, 1024 x 768, rooves). Who knows I'll try again with the OS X beta! ------------------ Regards, Mark:-{) Anxiously awaiting the G4 PowerBook
Buckeye
Damn! I was hoping you'd get it to work. Hey BTS: Any word from ATI about what's going on with this bug? ------------------ "Don't lie to me, Gustav! gibsonm
Charles, Buckeye, I think this might be a AST specific problem rather than an OS problem. The thread "1024x768 Resolution lost!" talks about a guy who has the same problems with an ATI card in a Wintel box. If he puts a different card in the game works fine. I'll post this to the ATI thread as well. ------------------ Regards, Mark:-{) Anxiously awaiting the G4 PowerBook
