John Kettler
Looks like they're running the two parts back to back. Episode begins with German defeat at Kursk, then takes up with Op Bagration. Good footage so far, as well as very nice geostrategic context. Hope some of you get to see it! Regards, John Kettler
John Kettler
Part One of Battlefield: the Battle of Berlin was fantastic, featuring untampered with period footage, much I'd never seen before, cogent discussion of leaders, weapons and the men, and much more. There was even footage of a Shtrafbat, the scope of the penal units, hundreds of general and admirals so sentenced, and typical missions. Pat Two's on now! John Kettler
That's Part Two, which was spectacular, with footage to make grogs weep. Series repeats at 3 a.m. PDT. Regards, John Kettler

costard
John, this is spectacularly unfair for those of us who don't have access. What's a "rare track wolf"?
John Kettler
costard, Sorry about that! You should be able to find this on DVD or video tape if really interested. I think it was BBC that produced the series called "Battlefields." The BoB doc was way off on Russian casualties--try some 600,000! A very long (nine part) Russian BoB doc is on YouTube, and a search here on CMBB will take you to a thread covering it and more. The track wolf was a special hydraulically lowered plow type hook which was railcar mounted and used specifically to break railroad ties, force the rails apart and destroy the integrity of the ballast, forcing extensive rebuilding efforts after this devastating last car through has exited the area. The only picture I'd ever seen of it before was in an obscure book called RAILWAYS AT WAR. Regards, John Kettler
costard
Thanks for the explanation John - I seem to remember seeing some footage of it being used, somewhere. Perhaps "World At War". Cheers.
