Reflections and the Future: 2 years on

So its been two seemingly fast years since Theatre of War was "released" (#1).

SO what has happened since then? Well since the game was released four free patches have been released.

1. To fix game breaking problems with elicense and more. Around May-June 2007.

2. To bring the disc version in-line with the download one (a cumulative patch). Around June 2007.

3. The Battle of Moscow patch which included a new campaign and mission editor and LOS improvements. Around August 2007.

4. The Panzer Lehr campaign which included a new campaign and a Battle generator and new map editor. Around January 2008.

Also we have the recent pay for add-on with some new missions and maps. Around March 2009

So thats the past. I will now reflect on it.... :o . So In my view throughout 2007 and early 2008 we have been supported my 1C and battlefront well considering I doubt the commercial success in the west was very good. So in January the game was as it should have been the previous year and people liked it. But I think that since that point 1C has been concentrating on all its other games including ToW2 and has discarded ToW as it makes them no money any more while Battlefront have been concentrating on CM:SF and its add-ons. We have evidence of this with the MP lobby servers being down 80% of the time.

Now onto the future, its not a good one i believe. Soon ToW2 will come out and people will hate it cause its got loads of bugs but in a year they will be fixed and THEN I will buy it. And ToW will be forgotten as the old thing that was really good but things are so much better now.

But certain things are bright and I hope will continue. We have the ToW MP tournament and still maps and missions are being released so the small community is getting smaller and smaller but I hope this game will become an old classic and people will remember it with fond hearts.

I hope I have touched on most peoples views and if some 1C and Battlefront people could say what they think will happen in the future or what could have been improved in the Past i would be grateful.

To the future,

P.S. If any of you wants to help to make the ToW Wikipedia page have more info (ive tried) then go do it HERE.

Footnotes

#1: Look here the release was a bit botched.

really this game compares on every level to squad assault. Both true real time tactical strategy WW2 games taken to the team and individual vehicle concept.

This game is leaps and bounds ahead of squad assault on all levels except for building occupation where it fails. I played this game long enough to know its pretty good and it gave me a good run.

I hope it continues to evolve and TOW 3 and 4 are on a distant horizon. The new shock force is a very different control concept to me. Although not a bad game I just like the way TOW feels better.

Where are these

This game is a classic though, gave me hours of fun in some of my 'lonely nights', one of the few games that I will remember as long as I play games :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm all for realism; and this gave me just that, with whatever computer technology can offer.

Sadly, it's not as mainstream as other games, so maybe doesnt receive as much funding into development as other games. Quite possibly, this realism concept is dead for good with other games like Men of War or Company of Heroes receiving so much popularity. Nothing wrong with those games, they just aren't about realism- it's arcade.

Sure this game can be dull and has bugs, but I just admire the amount of considerations that went into making sure it is as realistic as possible.

I still play this game and wish there was an independent community that I could contribute to.

Anyway, I am waiting for Kharkov 1943 to come out. It looks like a promising revival of this genre. Maybe other developers will begin producing something similar.
