John Kettler
Since there was a long hiatus in my viewing, the episode of Future Weapons I saw last night may be old hat, but I found it fascinating. Topics covered were AquaRam, a device using explosively propelled water to destroy IEDs clear up to cargo container size before they can detonate (similar to Alford Technologies WaterBlade, but uses safe binary explosive mixed on site, rather than built-in military explosives), the remarkable M110 sniper rifle (fascinating demo by the host that it's twice as fast as the M24 in picking off a string of targets, thanks to being semiautomatic) and the new to me Marine Infantry Automatic Rifle, sort of the BAR the Corps wished it had. Unlike the BAR, this one is quite usable in MOUT and is far easier to handle. Neat feature is that it takes standard M4 and M16 magazines directly, allowing full ammo compatibility with squad members. No ammo belt issues, either! Would imagine it'll be in rotation for a bit, so watch for it in reruns late at night and DVR it while you sleep. akd
What's most awesome about the "Future Weapons" bit on the M110 is that they felt the need to go back and dub in hollywood silencer sounds instead of using the real thing. I guess they assumed their typical viewership would not believe the rifle was really suppressed unless it sounded like silencers do in movies? *Pah-choo* *Pah-choo* *Pah-choo* Regardless, always cool to see the gunroom at Knight's Arm. John Kettler
Not the Pattern Room at Woolwich to be sure, but I'd love to spend some time there. Many years ago, my dad got to tour the Barrett factory and get the scoop on .50 cal sniper rifles. Green with envy over that! Meach
I had the idea once of using water as a spacer for armour to use against HEAT rounds. The water would insta-boil and use up the energy from the jet of molten metal. 4200 joules to boil a litre of water if I remember. To my mind it would neutralise a fair portion of the energy if you had a block of say 10litres of water per square foot? Would it be feasible to have blocks of armour plated water vessels on the side of tanks? Won't do diddly against kinetic tho I imagine?
