radioman999
Since there are a number of skin mods for Syrian and Uncons, would it be possible to make scenarios about Afghan and Soviet conflict? The existing terrain is similar if not identical and older Russian tanks are already in the game so. But one thing I think would be challenging is making air support for Soviet equivalent (ie.Mi-24? and Frogger). Also TOE might need to be modified. Nevertheless, would be an interesting modification.
Cpl Steiner
Check out the existing mods. I know for a fact that there are Red air support silhouettes and mods for Russian vehicles and uniforms. Someone even did a Russian voices mod! The hard part to me would be doing the Mujahideen correctly.
slug88
Note that the aforementioned red air support mod is not compatible with the current version of the game. At some point I plan on updating it for v1.10, but I've simply had far too little free time lately. Otherwise, as Cpl Steiner said, there are already quite a few mods out there that will convert the Syrians into Russians/Soviets.

I think you mean FROGFOOT? Frogger was a 1980's video game, where a Frogfoot was a 1980's Ground attack aircraft.
radioman999
ah ha, didn't know that air support has already been modded! Thanks for the info. why would it be difficult to model mujahdeen correctly? Combatants or fighters seem pretty similar maybe except for uniform or size of a squad.

Yes, thanks for the correction. Frogger is the game George was playing in a Seinfeld episode
Cpl Steiner
why would it be difficult to model mujahdeen correctly? Combatants or fighters seem pretty similar maybe except for uniform or size of a squad. It really is just the uniform. Afghan's don't often wear combats or jeans like the Uncons in CM:SF and the black-clad Fighters of CM:SF don't look much like Taliban fighters to me either. To look truly "Talib" for me they would need long smocks, waistcoats and round flat hats with colouring a mixture of whites and browns. If someone could do a Taliban mod, I'd be a happy bunny - especially with the Brits module just around the corner. Whilst on the subject, I wonder if it would be possible to alter any text in CM:SF? I remember for CM:BB someone made a program that searched for references to "Waffen-grenadier" and changed it to "SS" to get around the self-censorship of the German-published editions of CM:BB. A similar program to change "Syrian" to "Taliban" or whatever would be fantastic. By the way, if someone wants to make a CM:SF version of the Taliban prisoner revolt at "Qala-i-Jangi" once the Brits module is out, with British SAS and US special forces supporting Northern Alliance Reds against armed Talib ex-prisoners, that would be a great scenario (see link). Sergei
The fighters and combatants in the game are also well armed in comparison to the photographs of the Mujahideen fighters of the 1980's, in which they often carry bolt-lock rifles and probably even stuff left behind by the British in 1842... All texts are changeable by editing the strings.txt, found in the data BRZ's. Just be sure to use the latest version.

Hi Sergei, What do we do exactly? I found "<E>Unconventional" and changed it to "<E>Taliban" but it gave me an error when I went into the scenario editor.
Sergei
Did you get the strings.txt from version 110.brz (or the latest brz that has a strings file)? I haven't actually tried changing unit names, but it has worked for me on everything else (UI, status texts etc.)
Sergei
Btw. if you get it to work, here's a Pro tip: You can create a new language setting for yourself and use that as a simple way to change the unit names via options menu. In the beginning of the file you have these lines, just change them like I do: Languages Supported <E>English <E>Deutsch <E>Français <E>Español <E>Italiano <E>Polski <E>Taleban Codes for Languages Supported <E>E <E>G <E>F <E>S <E>I <E>P <E>T Font file code <E> <E> <E> <E> <E> <E>pl <E> Language Reverses Words <E>No <E>No <E>Yes <E>Yes <E>Yes <E>No <E>No Now you can add your own descriptions like this: <E>Combatant <G>Kämpfer <F>Milicien <S>Milicia <I>Combattente <P>Bojownik <T>Mujahideen Where you don't add custom names, the English version is used as default.
Cpl Steiner
Sergei, You are a genius! Well done my man! I followed your instructions above and was able to set "Unconventionals" to read "Taliban". This showed in both the scenario editor and the mission AAR. Great stuff!
