mike_the_wino
Do any of you have experience with making successful FoIA requests? I would like to see the service records of still living relative. He and I have spoken about this but he seems reticent to revisit his past. I suspect I could get his signature if pressed. Being rather vague intentionally as his story is one that I have a hard time believing and would like some verification one way or the other.

SgtMuhammed
From my understanding you can't get someone's personal records without their permission. My dad had to threaten the Social Security Office with FoIA action to get some clerk to give him some of his personal information.
Luther
I handled some FOI requests for a state agency. Bet yours got "lost" Send a follow-up letter to the Director of that agency stating the date you sent the original and that you have received no response. A BIG PART of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests is they must provide a response in something like 5 business days. If they cannot provide the answer within those 5 days, they must give you an estimate of when they will be able to give you an answer. Also, be careful in what you ask for. A common trick is to answer precisely the question you ask. If you ask for a copy of your XYZ report, you might be told there is none. But there could be several other reports on you - and since you did not ask for them - you will not get a copy.

Blackhorse
A personal trainer at a gym where I used to be a member was passing himself off as an "ex Special Operations (SEAL/SF), claiming to have served in the rangers, SF, and SEALs at various times to various people..... Things just didn't add up in his story, and every time I engaged him in discussions about things military he contradicted himself; my bs meter was pegged. I contacted veriseal to see if they had and record of him as a SEAL. they did not. "Not a SEAL" was the response I received back from them. Others weren't buying his line of bs either. http://www.socnet.com/showthread.php?t=79458 http://inthebreach.blogspot.com/2006/10/fierce-training-now-warriors-forge.html
