The Importance of Being UNCON

Intercepted UNCON Transmission

Attention, UNCON commanders and wannabes!

Here is a detailed analysis, by western specialists, not us, of how your brethren the Hezbollah, unexpectedly at war with Israel, not only took the best she could dish out, but did it with a single brigade of 3000 men, while Israel had to mobilize a bunch of divisions. The IDF was, to paraphrase the Survivor game of the Great Satan, "outthought, outplayed and outfought," despite overwhelming firepower, control of the air, etc., winding up with losses on par with Hezbollah's own and tabouleh on their faces.

Learn well, my brothers, how this was done, for war clouds gather and armies assemble. Be ready when your hour comes!

Analyst's comment

Analyst was not himself aware of much of the data in the intercepted item. Analyst has further learned that much of the ATGM misery inflicted on the IDF was via 1973 vintage AT-3a SAGGER, which is MCLOS. Guidance crews had been to Iran and fired multitudes of real missiles before returning to Lebanon. By Russian standards, these men rated "sniper."

Extensive discussion of this and related matters here.

David Eshel, Lt. Col., IDF, Ret., asserts that 90% of the IDF tanks hit were hit with tandem warhead weapons and says the AT-3 was used almost exclusively to smash infantry in houses, which it did very well. In any event, I'm sure UNCON commanders will find an Israeli assessment of the tank damage and tactics of interest. Also, be aware that the "laser beam warheads" mentioned are simply awful characterizations of the term "laser beam-riding missiles," do not connote some breakthrough in directed energy weapon tech, and have no relationship to the popular shark head mounted weaponry, either!

His account confirms some of what was presented in the ASIA TIMES articles above, but differs in other ways, such as a much larger Hezbollah force size estimate.

JK, I must compliment you on your good form on the new forum. I actually laughed out loud at this one.

Saving the more controversial topics for a more receptive audience is a very good idea. And I don't mean the arab-israeli conflict.

The 2006 Lebanon campaign was extremely influential on CMSF, so your post (despite the non-PC jihadi theatrics) is a good one.

Kettler - Great first post - Along with good links as well - I also think what is left out, regarding this conflict is the IDF never had its heart (leadership that is, never had its heart set on a fight.....they forced themselves to act, at the expense of the boots on the ground doing the fighting). Lessons were learned.......Next time, look for a thorough as$ whipping of Hezbollah forces.....IMPO....

hoolaman,

I have quite sense of humor, and I delight in word play. Glad you enjoyed it! I put the jihadi stuff in there to add some spice and color, not to mention as a deliberate offset to the often overwhelming levels of American military centrism one frequently finds here.

We actually had a Syrian here for a time, as I think you know, but his political fulminations got him banned. I think we would benefit greatly if we had some Arab wargamers in our global group. Offhand, I can't name even one.

The three-part series shows what a well-motivated, properly led light force with no armor and no air support can do against a powerful opponent used to ruling the roost. As such, I think it holds not just profound military lessons, but should also serve to change the core thinking of UNCON players. Granted, BFC has not provided the full UNCON toolkit, especially in the area of fortified buildings with tunnels between them, deep shelters, etc., but even so, there is much that can be learned here not just militarily but in terms of the UNCON philosophy of warfare. I think it's very easy to become a skulker, when combat experience has shown that a properly handled UNCON force can manhandle its opponent and cause it to dance to tunes it hates. Big difference! Besides, I haven't seen much here on UNCON matters, certainly nothing like what we've seen for the U.S. or even the Syrian (conventional) threat.

meade95,

Glad you liked my post, but am baffled by your assertion it's my first, seeing as how I date back to when CMBO was in Beta Demo! While I have no doubt the IDF is doing some serious soul searching/booting backsides, have you considered that this is, in fact, a two-sided game? Hezbollah has done what all of the Arab armies dating back to Israel's foundation have not: beaten the IDF in a stand-up fight and forced it to withdraw. Huge all by itself!

Hezbollah, though, knows Israeli pride is wounded, knows full well that Israeli political horsepower is only as good as regional public perception of the IDF's ability to deliver in the field, knows the IDF will learn from this shattering experience, and knows the future holds more highly protected tanks, this time with hard-kill active defenses in addition to quick obscuration techniques, knows the IDF will overhaul its AFV-infantry tactics, is fielding super heavy APCs, etc. Bottom line? Hezbollah, much as it might like to, can't sit on its laurels if it hopes to survive.

Attention, UNCON commanders!

Should you be so blessed as to find a foe this dense (camera's in same place in three attacks), make the most of it.

WARNING! REAL IED video; unknown casualties!

End UNCON intercept

Analyst recommendation: ID location soonest; notify local commander

to capture or neutralize command detonator element and video team.

Refresh vehicle crews on IED appearances and the importance of watching for them.

None of these was really hidden.
