Head to head play via ethernet crossover cable with no LAN???

Is it possible to play head to head by TCP/IP using an ethernet crossover cable as a link between two computers in the same room? I was going to try this over the holiday and wanted to see if anyone had had any success playing in this fashion. It would sure beat playing hot seat style and is a lot cheaper and easier than setting up a LAN with a router, especially since there are only two computers involved.

I'm not sure, but I think both computers have to have the same workgroup name as well. Also on mine the gateway was setup with the same IP address that was assigned to the computer. Also the subnet mask was set to 255 255 255 0 if I remember correctly. I was following the directions for setting up a LAN though and was using the crossover cable instead, but it worked. So some of this might not be needed.
