Were you able to get into these chat areas before with the same software setup ? Are you using any firewall or anti-virus software and has anything changed regarding them lately ? Since Microsoft has given up distributing their own version of Java, I suggest downloading the Sun version of Java. Clicking in the 'free download' section in the upper right hand corner should install the Java client.
