The other reason why Russian troops tend to sit on top of their rides is because of how small they are. Anybody that has been inside a BMP knows what I am talking about. Same was true for the SPW 251 in WWII. Drive around exposed until a threat was encountered, then drop down and deal with the problems of being buttoned.
