John Kettler
Caught part of Mail Call earlier tonight and learned something which may be useful to the Devs and scenario designers. The Army has instituted special training for all troops in convoys and especially convoy escort, via a special range at Ft. Sill on which real life derived scenarios are played out, to include recognizing and avoiding IEDs. In an unprecedented change tracing directly to OIF, escorts are now being taught to fire on the move using personal weapons against 60 targets from 30-300 meters away, starting with a dry run, the next with blanks, the next with live ammo. Everyone shoots, including the escort Hummer driver one handed! Thought this might have CM:SF applicability. Regards, John Kettler
DASman
they also have plans for a 360 degree simulation to train with before they go to the course. E
Splinty
Although I understand the need to train soldiers to shoot on the move, why would they train Hummer drivers to shoot out the window? It's nigh impossible to fit a pistol out the window of a M1114 much less an M4 or M16. Pluss we are not allowed to open the windows out in sector anyway.
John Kettler
Splinty, The ones shown had openable, full size windows. I think they were early unarmored models, with roof mounted .50s or SAWs. Maybe the rules are different for those not in the uparmored models? For sure, the ones I saw didn't have the vision block festooned roof turrets. Regards, John Kettler
civdiv
Didn't see the tv show mentioned, but it is incredibly dumb to open a bullet proof window in an ambush. The driver's job is to drive, not to shoot. They should be sending these guys to a school that teaches that one of the most important aspects of dealing with an ambush while in a vehicle is driving the vehicle properly. The driver has absolutely no reason to be shooting anything. It is highly inaccurate, makes the vehicle vulnerable (because the window is open), and distracts them from driving. civdiv
John Kettler
civdiv, As I noted above, these weren't armored Hummers, just the standard original production models. Thus, I don't believe that the windows were bulletproof either. Regards, John Kettler

Regards, John Kettler "Train the way you fight" You aren't going to get in a scrape in Iraq with an unarmored HMMWV as there are no unarmored HMMVWs there. So why train that way? Dumb, just plain dumb, for a number of reasons. civdiv
John Kettler
civdiv, I don't dispute your argument. I'm simply reporting what I saw on the program I watched. Regards, John Kettler

Regards, John Kettler Sorry John, Not flaming you and if that was your perception of my replies than I heartily apologize. Just saying that you don't train someone to do something they shouldn't be doing in the real event. My problem isn't with you, it is with them teaching this stuff. civdiv
