Never heard of this "bird" before

Where's the video of what you are talking about?

All the videos in the link you provide show other stuff.

This link shows some additional information, although it says the DAP version is an L model not a K, as stated in your link.

Ther blackhawk has had armed options like this from almost day one, and although the electronic fit is more sophisticated, it's really no different from the first Huey gunships which were in effect just armed slicks.

Although the Hind gets most attention for something like two decades the armed assault version of the Hip was actually the most heavily armed helicopter in the world.

"Mi-8TVK: The HIP E is used as a gunship or direct air support platform. Airframe modifications add 2x external hardpoints for a total of 6, and mount a flexible 12.7-mm machinegun in the nose. The probable armament is 57-mm rockets, bombs, or AT-2/SWATTER ATGMs."

Nidan1,

Sorry for the confusion! Was under the mistaken impression that the referenced video was included.

The video being analyzed is the sixth one down here, titled AC-130--NOT!

Peter Cairns,

While I agree that the Blackhawk has sported some unusual weapons (to include the Hellfire) in various trials and has long sported miniguns on the MH-60s as door guns, the DAP version is, IMO, in a much tougher league, seeing as how the 30mm gun (which I suspect is GEPOD-30, a pod mounted 3?-barrel GAU-8) can wreak havoc on even MBTs.

The Mi-8TVK, in an environment sterilized of air defense weapons, would be a headache to be sure, but is simply not competitive with any number of

helo gunships, to include the AH-64A Apache/AH-64D

Longbow (max load 16 x Hellfire +30mm Chain Gun), the Agusta A-109, the Mi-24 HIND D/E/F, the Mi-28

HAVOC and Ka-50/52, HOKUM A/B. All of these are armored, more maneuverable, faster and have better guns, while many can be fitted with air-to-air missiles as well, in many cases converted manportable SAMs. IMO, the HIP E, scary as it looks, would be lunch against such as these.

Regards,

John Kettler
