[Question] : Will SC-2 require high speed internet for TCP/IP play?

Recommended Posts

Sure, you just need to have a TCP/IP connection to the internet.

As with any network connection though, your milage may vary with regards to performance but it should work just fine. Being that it's turn based, its not really moving all that much data at any one time.

My experience with one player on DSL and one player on dial-up is that SC2 data transfer takes about a minute. The first turn may be a little longer with campaign information being transfered but it's pretty quick after that.

Hubert has implemented essentially the same TCP/IP code from SC1 so players should be able to play the same way they are right now. I noticed some other complications resulting from my upgrading to a Linksys wireless network at home since SC1, but players with networks have probably figured all that out by now. We're including some additional troubleshooting notes in the User Manual errata to help clarify things.

Just to clarify on the length of data transfers Bill mentioned, this is once you complete your turn and not for each individual move. Individual moves are virutally identical in terms of data transfer length as they were in SC1.

In general the amount of final data being transferred at the end of your turn (including the extra data on first turn synchronization) has now doubled (approx. 500K for the larger campaigns) and so it is will naturally feel a bit longer to complete the transfer than in SC1 via dialup. Cable/DSL etc., will of course be very quick.

Out of cheer programmers-curiosity : what is in that 500k ? If all individual moves are already send ?
