Combat Mission Primer (Tactics Handbook)

Recommended Posts

I was wondering:

Is there a CM tactics Handbook (do's & do'nts) that will help/guide the CM gamer in better understanding the different tactics of say tanks, infantry (in general) and the like? Especially for those players that is new to the wonderful word of wargaming.

Could such a "primer" not be written with the help of the very people here on the bulletin board?

I read some very useful information on the usage of Half Tracks in the Tech section. That will obviously be of great value to fellow gamers if posted under the section e.g. "A Combat Mission Primer"

edited/compiled by the grognards here!

Likewise the best ways to handle tanks in wooded areas, when to use 60mm and 81mm Mortars etc.

What do you guys (in the know) say?

Shall we call it the " The Combat Mission Primer/Tactics Handbook" then?

Preface to the CM Primer:--

"Remember that no dumb bastard ever won a war by dying for his country.

He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for *his* country."

--General S. Patton (US Army)--

PS: Mind you, the Americans were prone to yelling "TIGER!!!" even if it was a Kübelwagen sighted. [Allied (panic) reaction in the Ardenne offensive of WWII !! :)

WineCape,

Most of the information your talking about is out there.

Some places to start are:

1. http://www.siteonsound.com/CMReadingList.htm

2. http://www.gamesofwar.de/ The tactics section

3. http://combathq.thegamers.net/articles/articles.asp as aka PanzerLeader suggested

If you can find some WW2 field manuals, even better. I know they are out there to be found because I found some.

If your interested I can point you in the direction of the following:

1. American Tank Company Tactics (FM 17-32) Nov 1944

2. American Armored Battalion Tactics (FM 17-33) Nov 1944

3. Employment of Tanks With Infantry (FM 17-36) 13 March 44

4. German Squad Tactics in WWII by Matthew Gajkowski.

5. German Panzer Tactics in WWII (by Charles C. Sharp).

Its kind of sad that I've learned more about Infantry tactics by reading this board than by being the U.S. Army for 8 years.

Anyway...love the idea of a book that summarizes what is strewn accross many websites. For me, anything that Fionn writes is educating for me (tactics).

my two cents...nothing more

Are these on the Web? Either way, _I_ would like to be pointed to these.

Go to this site: http://home.fuse.net/nafziger/index.html

Click on the Books button at bottom of the screen.

The books are for sale. Most for $20 each. I was a little leary at first to order. Called and ordered over the phone. No secure web ordering. Took a week from placing the order to when the books showed up in my mail box.
